wierd build sheets found in my L78
 

Just picked up a lo mile orig survivor 69 L78 chevelle,its a early kansas built car and had a few hand written build sheets,a wierd 8x11 card with pics of chevelles on it,and a body broadcast sheet in the inner fenders pretty neat stuff...here are a few pics.

The top one looks like a Fisher Body inspection sheet.
The bottom one look like a seat tag, but could be for some other component since it's not on the normal tag (or it could be a plant variance).

I found a similar hand-written paper in the back seat of my 69 Chevelle.

Looks almost like a piece of paper towel out of a dispenser -- M-21 is clear ... 752A?

The 752 is for the 300 Deluxe vinyl interior. Not sure on the &quot;A&quot;.

Very cool! I've seen these in Framingham Chevelles before, and almost every vehicle built at South Gate, CA. I never understood the reason for codes such as M21, when that piece of paper was usually deep inside the seat, before the upholsterer knew what kind of car it was destined for. I'd love to know who wrote these out, and at what step in the assembly process it was done at. Consider the rate these cars were being built at, and that's an awful lot of writing each day!

Normally seats were built up in a remote area of the vehicle assembly plant (called the &quot;Cushion Room&quot;) due to fire concerns. Seat covers, foam and structure were all received independently from the various component suppliers.

The person building the seat up had to know specific RPO information (bucket vs bench, cloth/vinyl/color, seat structure - recline or not, power vs no power, etc) so that the seats could be conveyed to the main line in sequence order to be installed into the correct vehicle. This was the case for anyone building up or trimming out subassemblies that were conveyed in order: engine/trans, axles, front end sheet metal, the individual components that were built up into the bodies, tire/wheel assemblies, etc. They worked off the build sheet or build manifest to know what parts to install.

The information not only helped them while they were building it up but it also served as a double check for the operators down stream to make sure things were staying in line. If they happened to get out of sequence - that was a big deal, because it took time to determine how you got out of whack and what it would take to get back in order.

Nobody in the vehicle assembly plant cares about the VIN. The PVI (Primary Vehicle Identifier) or CSN (Carrier Sequence number) is used until the General Assembly (GA) sequence number is assigned; once you have the GA sequence number that is the gold source.

The VIN is just another part to be installed on the correct vehicle, just like the Mulroney window sticker or a tune up or SPID label. It is a component, but not a build tracking aid. In many cases the VIN is not even established until the build is well on its way.
