"The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Sometimes cars come along that ignite your soul like a match to a can of denatured alcohol. Why denatured? No reason, except that I went to college and figured I better use some of those words I learned (pronounced...LERR-Ned ) Anywho, I'm into the restoration of my A12 Super Bee, affectionately called "The Beater Bee" by the previous owner, and figured I'd better start a thread to show some much needed progress. With the MCACN show looming on the horizon, and several projects that popped up over the recent months, I was forced to delay my unveiling of the Beater Bee until next year's show. I know, I know. Bob was so distraught over this that he almost wasn't going to have the show this year. I told him to buck-up, stop sniveling, and put on the show anyway! After some persuasion, he agreed, so rest easy: MCACN 2016 is on! Whether or not any of that actually happened is speculatory at best. And since speculatory isn't even a word, then I'm pretty sure that previous conversation didn't happen at all. Actually, it went more like this:
Bob: {rrrriiinnng} "Hello?" Me: "Hi Bob, Dave here. I don't think I can make the show this year. I've had a lot come up like plate tectonics, the Coriolis effect, and did you know the Moon is actually moving away from the Earth at about 1.5 inches per year???? With all that going on, I am too busy to get my car done in time. Can I do it next year? Thanks Bob, you're one of the good ones ....{click}" Bob: "Hello?" So, with that, the countdown is on for next year's show!!! To start from the beginning, I was after this car for 3yrs. After many subliminal emails to the owner making small talk and such, finally, my badgering paid off. Hey, how do you think I got Kelly to be my wife!? Sometimes the squeaky oil gets the wheel....er, something like that. So here she is and the first "touch"... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...42012-a12b.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_4130.jpg And here is after I flooded it, with the Ukranian driver saying, "No have gas, no poomp the pedal, is spark, no have...you see what I'm talking....." https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...42014-a12f.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_4479.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_4482.jpg Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Oh course, what does one do with such an iconic icon of the Muscle Car era? Well, here's what you do!
Phil: {rrring} "Hello?" Me: "Hey Phil, Dave. Long time no talk man! How's things? How's Lori? Been flying much? Hey, I bought my Dream Bee and wondered if maybe you'd like to bring your COPO to the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago this year? Ever hear of it? Probably not. Small, local show. Anyrate, I haven't seen you in 13yrs since we were laid off from TWA, and thought what a fitting reunion! I'll see you there. I'm sure you'll get the time off. Thanks Phil! You're one of the good ones ....{click}" Phil: "Hello?!?" Actually, the whole thing was in reverse order. Woj contacted me and told me about the show, and a call to Reliable set the transport up after Bob and Ryan agreed to have the car in the Barn Find section at the 2015 show. Here's the Pics from that! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_4953.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_4954.jpg Here's my Bee at the set up area for the Barn Find section of MCACN 2015. The cool thing is the COPO right above the hood scoop is Woj's! Had to take another angle on that while the show wasn't fully set up. Really a neat pic! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...19-aaaaaaa.jpg Me and my lovely wife Kelly next to the Bee! That was taken by Marc Rozman, who we met at the show. So many nice people!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...123_205953.jpg I love this image, and call it, "Bee Blurr". Kelly took this as I was driving away headed for Reliable. Something about that just sums up the whole show in one picture: As the show ends, stands come down, seats get folded up, cars fire up, Big Rigs pull in awaiting to gobble up acres of iconic juggernauts, and amidst all that flurry, your car and you stay in focus the entire time. Oh man, that's pretty deep.... Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Next up was to have the original owner out to see the car and hear the stories. Of course, Kodak stock jumped after my purchase of as many memory sticks as I could to capture the moment! Gary was just ticked to death to see the car. Him sitting in it for the first time was just priceless.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...93-42023-4.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...93-42024-7.jpg Gary hasn't seen the car since 1991. I'm not sure he knew where to begin telling me stories.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...93-42025-2.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-42026-11.jpg Oh course, what do you do with the original owner of your car? Roast the tires, that's what!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-42027-13.jpg This is the start of the restoration with Gary helping me remove the first part. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...410_113234.jpg Just like the Bee Blurr photo, this one is pretty intriguing too. I look at this photo and wonder what Gary is thinking about. Just a cool pic capturing a unique moment with man and machine. Sadly, Gary passed away unexpectedly and won't be there to install that aircleaner in 2017 with me:( But the good news is his Son will fill in his spot! Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
So, fast forward a few months and it's on, like Donkey Kong!! Somebody said that once to me and I knew he was serious, so now's it's stuck in my vocabule..vocab...vo..my words . So, step one, tear the car down and document everything. I found so many cool things with this car. It's only got 53,000 miles but it was a Michigan car, so it's got some rust. But, a few bolts, and it's down the unibody!!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_5498.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_5501.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ercoating1.jpg Of course, a propane tourch and a nice tin scraper make quick work of the undercoating. Time to blast and prime! Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Here we are blasted. I decided on doing both quarters, so I didn't have them blasted. That saved a few bucks. Out comes the gun filled with DP50LF and we have a primed Bee!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-beeflorr.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...beebbottom.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-beeapril1.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-beeapril2.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-beeapril4.jpg I felt like someone was watching me the entire time I was doing this, so I figured I'd leave a note in case someone was showing up after hours to look at the work. All previous owners saying "HI!!!" Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
This is the part of the hobby that keeps me going. The snapshots of the past that these cars all carry with them. The fact that the original owner got to see his car one more time before his passing and that his son will be involved. It's like counting the rings of a tree. Good luck with her .. it seems you are up for the task of bringing that bee back to life

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Cool stuff Dave!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
The link to the Original Owner is what makes the whole car, RIP :-(
So special that he was able to reconnect before passing on:-) The shiny metal is great but the history is what it is all about!!! Keep us in the loop as the restoration continues:-) Ryan |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Wow, great car and great story. Having the original owner see and drive it is pretty cool.

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Awesome project. Thanks for taking the time to share. I excited to see every update on your truck project and I'm sure I will be just as ancy for more posts on this one.

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Thanks guys! I appreciate the well-wishes! It'll be a long process, but they all are. It probably won't move as fast as the '49 Truck did, but there's a bit more work to do on this one. Glad you guys enjoy my threads! Can't really do anything else sitting in hotel rooms on layovers, so might as well write informatuitive posts I think ...anyway, onto more build junk!
I got the front suspension just about done. What often happens when I restore parts/cars, think about the guys who built these things and the car coming down the assembly line. Mopar lower control arms were natural stamped steel and then dipped into a bucket of cosmoline for rust protection. How far down varies, but most were to about where the large rivet is right by the ball joint. Wonder if the control arm guy had any other jobs to do? Frank: "Hey Steve, what you doing today?" Steve: "Oh, nothing. Just dipping control arms. It's supposed to be dipped to the rivet, but I'm going to do a few before it and maybe just one after it so forty years from now it'll be the topic of discussion on internet forums. You?" Frank: "I see. I'm going to put markings all over the place so those same guys freak out trying to reproduce them. And I'll only put them on some things, and not others just to start a few fights. Hey, what's this "internet" thing you're talking about?? Do I know him?" With only 53,000 miles on the car, and nobody making correct repros on the drag links, I just cleaned up the originals. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics..._suspesion.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...trol_arms2.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ntrol_arms.jpg Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Here's the before pics on the suspension. Marking guy was at it as evidence by the torsion bar adjuster arm having a very large Orange marking after tightening. I'll replicate that afterwards. How I know it was done after installation, and not "dipped" as some claim, is the fact that the side of the control arm had the marking where the brush touched the vertical part of the control arm. The left side was considerably larger than the right side...
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ontrolarm2.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...323-beearm.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...eering_arm.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...astle_nuts.jpg Marking guy was here too. Yellow paint marking on the lower adjuster sleeve, and red paint blop on the castle nut Cheers |

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Sometimes those LCA "rocker arms" are different colors from one side to the other....orange, blue.
All my cars have different combo's. Looking at a lot of low mile cars - I think they appear to be paint dipped before the LCA gets assembled. The tie rod clamps (and the sleeves, bolts and nuts) are usually zinc phosphate plated as well. Can't think of anything other than the odd hood latch hardware that has any black oxide on it. The work you are doing looks good.....I guess I should get back over to the A12 site.....been awhile . I am Maxwellwedge over there. Have a look at my GTX details showing some good shots of the LCA's etc. GTX... |

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Thanks Rick!
I'm thinking of bringing it to MCACN this year for Vintage Certification. |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Jim,
Thanks for the tips and man, that's a NICE car!!!! You GOTTA bring that to MCACN for sure!!!! I'll be there this year and would like to meet you in person. Interesting thing on those lower control arms. I had a '68 St. Louis built Charger R/T that had blue on the control arm torsion adjusters. Both of mine on the Bee showed Orange. The k-frame on the st.louis car has a yellow brush mark on the steering box mount, idler arm mount, and a green brush stroke on the passenger side motor mount under the bolt on motor mount. The brush mark was on the welded perch on the k-frame. Nothing like that on this one. Yellow brush mark on the idler arm mount though. Understood on the sleeve finish I knew that after I did it that I'd have to redo it. You're a plethora of knowledge as is a lot of those guys on the A12 board for sure. Broke the springs down and will be blasting them later this week. New liners, pads, bolts/bushings/pads/clamps from Badalson are on deck to be installed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-springsjp.jpg Cheers PS: Don't you worry Mikey....Kelly will be out here helping shortly!! Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
I have no idea who this guy is. I have no idea how that beat up old car ever got into the building. I believe the young lady in the photo may be being held hostage.
I believe that all of this is a figment of someones imagination and it has all been creatively photo-shopped by some unscrupulous Mopar fanatic.... Bashton |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
But, but but, BOB!!!!! I'm telling you, Kelly is here on her own free will!!! That's what I was told to say.....
OK, don't anyone panic, but I didn't correct any of the incorrectness that has been pointed out to me just yet. I figured I'd add a whole bunch more incorrectness to it, and if my Freshman year Algebra has taught me anything, it's that two negatives make a positive! Sooo, on that mentality, I have to end this restoration next year on an even number of incorrect things so they all cancel themselves out. Ya know, it's hard to argue with that logic! My goal is like Bush during the 2nd Gulf War....shock an awe!!!! I'll shock the judges with the sheer number of things wrong, and leave them in awe that anyone would enter a car like this into judging!!! But seriously, fear not! I will be correcting things in the next few months and will re-post for more critiques. So here's my latest things done: Rear leafs rebuilt, front suspension just about done, and I'm starting into the Dana 60 as we speak. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-spring1a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-spring4a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-spring3a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-spring6a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-spring2a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...-springsag.jpg As you can see, 53,000 miles of Michigan rust really pits that metal This took a LOT of blasting to get them this clean. Despite what you've heard on the street, leaf spring clamps are a pain. But it's so much fun seeing a nice clean spring assembled!!! Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
And here we are assembled on the front end. I need to rebuild the power steering box with new seals and such, then I can mount that on the k-frame. And I'm festid...festigeous...festi ....ah, working hard at blasting the upper control arms and pressing in new bushings!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...frtonriht2.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...pernsion1a.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...156-fonrt1.jpg Nothing is tightened down yet, and no cotter pins installed. I'm working on the brakes too so I can wrap up this whole front end. Once I get the rear axle done, that'll be just about it for the drivetrain! Next month, Welding 101 with such memorable moments as, "OWCH!!! HOT HOT HOT!!!!" and the ever classic, "Hmmmmm....I could have sworn I had lined that up better than that!" Cheers Dave |

Dave
What's the amber finish on the control arms ? Lookin' good Dave. Mike |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
They were originally dipped in cosmoline as a protectant for the raw metal finish.
|
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
What Steve said! They were dipped, so to simulate that, I taped off a dip line by the large rivet at the front. Sprayed liberally, let drip dry with runs and such to get the proper look. I didn't use real cosmoline since that stuff stays relatively tacky. I used Krylon battery protectant which is pretty close to the real stuff in color. Hope to wrap up the driveline this month!
Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Oh, and Jim. Awesome car! I was particularly finicky when taking pictures of mine to note details like the stripe cut at the side reflectors, painted grease on the deck lid hinge...stuff that shows up on your car!. Good stuff! My car is PS, no PB, console, tach, pedal dress up.
Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
A few updates to post. The suspension is just about done. I'm working on the rear and hope to have that all buttoned up here this month. That'll complete the drivetrain!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Looks great! The outside the exhaust manifold dipstick tube routing and the black handle....many people mess that up - you didn't. :^)
Maybe it's the flash...but - I would re-plate the upper control arm can adjusters, brake backing plates and tie-rod sleeve clamps zinc phos. The strut rods could use some quick black or a light zinc phos plate.....maybe ECS's RPM stuff would help take the shine down a little bit. Nice work! Jim |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Wonderful car and awesome level of detail.
We need to chat when I tear down my 69 Charger R/T. I could use some help with the details... Lawrence |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
OK, sorry for the delay on the updates. There's been so much going on as of late it seems, and every time I sit down the computer update something else comes up! Like the other day I got news that Mercury was transiting the sun. Of course, with a rumor like that, I had to break out the telescope. After the retina surgery, I can now see through both eyes again, so here's the update!!!!!
I'm wrapping up the drivetrain here and have since got the Dana all buttoned up. Michigan rust really played havok on this thing, and the pitting was pretty severe. I thought about using All Metal on the case to smooth it over, but then thought about the history of the car and leaving some character on the finished product. Plus, I'm lazy. Ain't nobody got time to sand down every fin, nook, and cranny on this rear end! Overall I'm happy with it and think it came out acceptable. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn1242.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscn1245.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-dscn1244.jpg New bearings, seals, etc, as well as the front drums all set to be reinstalled. There are a few minor details on the front hubs I'm missing that I'll correct shortly. (yellow dabs on three studs and a green swipe on one hub...I just can't remember which hub they go on. Have to go back in my notes) Now it's onto the last two major sub-assemblies! Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
Sparing you all the 1000 photos of a "Before" heater core, here's the finished product minus a stamp that I'm having made up of the part number, and I'm still awaiting a back ordered heater core. Mine didn't do well under the pressure test. It leaked...I mean...don't we all??
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dscn1214.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dscn1218.jpg I'll ad some more here shortly with the stamp and front side after I get the heater core installed. Moving on, it's time to hit the dash!!! Well, not really since then I'd have to fix that dent too... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-dscn1238.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-dscn1239.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-dscn1240.jpg It's amazing what storing a car inside will do to a just about 50yr old wiring harness. It's still bendable without sounding like a bowl of Rice Crispies!! All that's needed on those wires is a good cleaning and a small section wrapped again. I blasted the dash and have everything torn down. I'm awaiting new dash bezels, new switch knobs, and sent the heater plate out for a good rechrome job. Dash pads are in perfect shape too! Cheers |
Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-dscn1256.jpg
Here's the dash painted and the radio installed. And since I have to keep this clean for a while longer, might as well start grinding and sanding down some metal on the body. I mean, why not? It's not like dust will coat everything I just did? And there's nothing like having three things on a car going on at once to make sure you get absolutely nothing done....ever...on anything! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-dscn1310.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn1312.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscn1313.jpg My goal on this side was to keep the original quarter panel in place with the factory undercoating intact. I'm going to try and do the same thing on the other side, but there is a bit more work involved there. But for now, here's the driver's side with a new trunk extension clamped in place. Kelly was sad after I showed her the stripped quarter panel. She says, "But, there's no more Beater Bee!!??!" Nope....there's not! At least hopefully not by the end of the year when it's sitting in a fresh Hemi Orange paint job! More to come.... Cheers |
