Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Hi. I recently purchased this vehicle, which I have known of for over 20 years. I ran into this car by mistake one day when I was driving the sideroads of Ontario. The owners and I became friends over the years and he recently passed away. I purchased it from his wife a few weeks ago. He had told me he acquired the car in the spring of 1970 after it had been stolen and the engine and wheels removed. The car was repainted silver approximately 30 years ago and has been sitting in his garage for well over the 20 years that I knew him; it had never been out of the garage since I knew him. He had had this car documented by GM Vintage Services back in 1995 and I had it redone a couple of weeks ago hoping it would show a little more information; it didn't. In any event I will attempt to post a picture of the documentation and the car however I am terrible at doing this. Doug.

Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Thanks guys. It is a nice car and I've been after it for a long time. The reason I had it re-documented was that I thought it might explain the chambered exhaust and the F41 suspension. I remember Bruce telling me the exhaust was still on the car and sure enough, it is. Its been scabbed into and patched but its still there, although I doubt its very usable. I have read somewhere that these two items may have been standard equipment up until the third week of Nov. 1968 and this car was shipped the first week of November.
The other things I couldn't explain is that it has full carpeting and a plate on the door panel where a remote control mirror came through, which I understand may not have been available on a SS. He wasn't overly handy and I would doubt whether these items were ever changed. I haven't taken it off of the trailer yet so really have not tried to find any build sheets or anything on the car. He was the one that had it painted silver and installed the chrome slotted wheels over 30 years ago. I have one early photo showing it in silver only. He had told me at one time that when it was delivered to the dealership it fell off of the ramps coming off of the truck and it damaged the quarters. I expect this is true as its not a story you would make up. There were three NOS chrome wheel well chrome mouldings in the trunk, one in the original wrapper, however I have no idea why as the ones on the car are perfect. The different colour hood is due to him dropping a load of 2x4s' he had in the attic of the garage onto the hood. The interior is great except for one rip on a seam on the drivers seat plus someone had a Hurst shifter installed. Doug |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Our 300 DEluxe SS396 hardtop came from John Holland Motors in Burlington, Ontario as well.
This was the original owner of our car that we met at a Waterdown car show. He owned the dark gray Chevelle in the background at the time. He gave up on trying to find his old car and built the new one. GM of Canada has the documentation on any car built and or sold new in Canada. Our L78 car was Baltimore built. |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Hi Keith. I knew one of the mechanics at J. Holland back in the early 70s' as he worked on a 67 Corvette that was raced out of a Brantford, Ont. dealership in the late 60s', early 70s', which is where I met him. I bought a new 69 COPO Chevelle from B&A Chevrolet, located in the Yorkville area of Toronto, in 1969 and this one may be about as close to that one that I'm going to get. Doug.

Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Doug,
I can tell you for certain that unless it was specify on the Canadian docs.....the carpet and the drivers remote mirror was added and changed out by someone, dealer, etc. I have a Registered Canadian BUILT 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan....showing an RPO drivers side remote mirror on the Canadian Docs. Have you pulled the carpet.....to see if the Rubber Mat is under it? Dan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Doug,
What color was your 1969 COPO Chevelle? Dan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Three of us bought COPO Chevelles through Beare Motors In Port Perry. They also sold a blue L88 Corvette and I understand it went to the U.S. a few years ago. Nurse Chev-Olds sold a red COPO Camaro in `69. In about 1970 the owner
had an accident. He was killed and the car was a total write off. |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
That's a great Chevelle Doug. A shame about the circumstances though.
What are your plans for this awesome '69 Chevelle? |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
I haven't done anything to the Chevelle at this point; its still on the trailer as I just don't have time to deal with it. It will be interesting to see if the door panels have the same date on the back of them, not that they couldn't have added the mirror; but really, of all things to add, a remote control mirror; something I certainly couldn't live without. I'll check under the carpet to see whats there.
My COPO was dark green. There were three of them in the compound when I looked at it in the fall of 69. Two green ones and a blue one. I wanted to trade the SS wheels for the rally wheels on the blue one however they wouldn't go for it. I traded in a 67 427-435 hrs for it. I saw the blue one later at the same dealership when the engine had been blown up. The salesman said they had had five of them that year, the other two being yellow and orange; the orange one going to the Barrie area. A friend of mine also purchased a yellow one from a London, Ont dealership the same year and I saw a light blue one in Kitchener, Ont. in 1972 or 73. I'm just finishing a restoration on one of my other cars which I want to put on the road within the next month so the Chevelle will have to sit until I can look at it. I'm not going to do another restoration right now as I've just done two. I may stick my 70 402-375 hrs. in it for now, paint it and do some minor cleaning and hopefully drive it a little later this summer. Doug. |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Doug,
Do you know the whereabouts of your Fathom Green COPO Chevelle today? Dan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Don't be surprised if you find that owners changed things early on with these cars. About the second summer that I had our COPO car, I found a set of buckets and console at Dom's east of Oshawa. They ended up in our 300 Deluxe car many years later. The '69 SS396 had been rolled so and everything was mint. I had the SS Chevelle letters and Corvette 427 numbers added to the front fenders when the car was brand new. Added an AM radio that I picked up too. Our 300 Deluxe car also had carpets when we got it. I found a repro rubber mat for the car but it didn't fit very well over the hump. Lots of stuff went on back then, especially when originality didn't matter.

John, Not to take anything away from your statement or not to take anything away from Doug's Beautiful Post Sedan Chevelle. But I would say that the Holy Grail in a 300 Deluxe is a 1969 SS396 L89 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle. We had one on display at the 2014 MCACN L89 Invitational. Here is the video link.....the word is that we just may have another real deal L89 300 Deluxe in a Coupe attending the 2016 MCACN.....the Best MUSCLE CAR SHOW on Earth. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PM3DE8qI2NY Dan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
My 69 copo was in British Columbia 6 months ago. It was fully restored, (absolutely beautiful job), the owner has all of the original paper work to go with the car including the original bill of sale from B&A Chevrolet, the Broadcast copy, the Shipping Copy and envelope to go with it, a couple of original insurance slips, a few original pictures from 1969 and the original B&A dealership emblem that was on the car when I purchased it. I would love to own it however it is well out of my reach.
The Morris-Carter dealership in Hamilton, Ont. had a yellow 69 COPO Camaro, 427-425 hrs, 4 spd. car earlier in the summer of 1969. The salesman I was dealing with sent me across the street to look at it however he didn't tell me what it was, ie he just told me to go look at the yellow Camaro in the compound. It wasn't very pretty; bright ugly yellow, yellow wheels, blackwall tires, blue emblems and a cowl hood. I went back and asked him what it was. When he told me I tried to purchase it but it was already sold. He was just teasing I guess. They had a 69 Biscayne 427 in the showroom and a W31 Olds Cutlass as well and I had been trying to purchase a 69 Nova, L78-4spd car. Quite a dealership back then. I never ever saw that Camaro again and the dealership is only about 25 minutes from me; I was in Hamilton often and never heard of it. I actually know of a 69 Camaro, L78, 4spd, L89 car that the owner gave me a copy of his original Vintage Services documentation from GM. The car is black on black and he is the original owner. I haven't talked to him in about 20 years however he may still have the car. I purchase a rare Pontiac from him back then and he showed me the car and then gave me a copy of his documentation. Doug. |

Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
COPO, COPO, come on tell us about the W31:-)
Ryan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Well, there were not a lot of W31s' around back then. A fellow from Woodstock, (Marv), had a medium blue one that he would bring to Brantford to race. Scary car back then for a 350; turned high 12s' if I remember correctly. I certainly didn't want to run him and I had 427 cars; he is still racing and I wouldn't run him now either and I'm still running big horse cars, well big horse for my era. Another friend from Burford that I bought my 66 425-425 hrs Corvette from, (Darryl, bought a 69 silver one in the late 70's. I went out in it and it seemed pretty quick at the time. If I remember correctly the one in the showroom at Morris-Carters was a light green or yellow; a long, long time ago and my memory is not what it used to be. You realize that for me to buy these cars new puts me in my late 60's so we don't remember everything as accurately as we maybe should. Those three are the only ones I remember from that time. Doug.

Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Fantastic memories!!!!
I had a spirited ride in a 70 W31 and it felt pretty serious. I have no high horse experience......... Other than parking the L89 cars at our L89 display:-) Ryan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Great find.
It's nearly a twin to the one I'm rebuilding. Hope to see it in person sometime. |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Back on topic:-)
Be careful about sharing the 1995 Canadian Docs they used to provide the microfiche with option and engine data for the car, but the sheet would have all the cars before and after (so this is kind of sharing someone else's data) but the main concern I would have with sharing it is the key code data, you can use those codes to go to any GM dealer to have keys cut..... I want to be the only person with keys for my car.... I assume you are the same way:-) The keys codes are also written on my original invoice, so you have to be careful. Ryan What a cool car, and your stories of back in the day are confirming my hunch that I have been born a generation late:-) :-( |

Doug,
I sent you a PM. Randy |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Doug, I have the twin sister to your car, also a black on black 69 L78 2 Dr Post car, bench seat 4 speed, Cdn car also. I'll check my GM sheet to see when it was built too, but it also was a Baltimore built car , has the brightwork too and the D96 side stripe. Mine is an M20 tranny vs your M22,.....
Dan , you have another great car for your 2Dr Post site ! Congrats Doug, a great car and a great find! |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Hi Bob,
Good to see you on here....all the Real Deal Black SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan's are coming out to play :-) Dan |
Re: Canadian 1969 Chevelle 300 Deluxe SS, L78, M22
Doug, so back to Marv's W31. It was a 12 sec. car and you still didn't want any of that with your COPO Chevelle? I know Danny B tells me his L78 Nova ran in the 12's. And I always heard about "BENSONS" green L79 Chevy II being really fast too.
Now wouldn't Bozak's Nova with your L72 from the Chevelle be a handful as it pulled the wheels on the street with Danny in there with Murray. What about Ed Van DerTuin's 427 Nova, or Al Bears cars and even "The Christmas Tree", I forget his name of hand. He's from town too. So a W31 could run with a Yenko Duece back in the day? I always hear that these cars went near as fast as people think? And you can see even Pro Stock was around 9.90 or 10.0 cars in 1970 with all there work too. John |
