Duplicate Keys...

I'm looking to get some extra keys made for some of the cars...doubt we have any key numbers to reference. What is the best source for Chevy keys 68-70 vintage??

Re: Duplicate Keys...

I have the GM (B&S) blanks correct for 69 up. Give me the letter codes on your keys and I can send you the blanks.
Or you can take your keys to a lock pro and he can give you your codes by measuring the cuts.
With the letter codes and the cut info I can cut the keys. I have the cutter from a GM dealer.
The latter style blanks will work to replace the pear and hex style but are incorrect in appearance.
The early blanks can be purchased at HBC and The Parts Place Inc by letter code.
Steve.

OK..I looked at the keys and found the letter codes...if I get the correct blanks from you can a local lock person cut them here using the originals as the pattern?? It appears most of the keys have a "J" or "K"...also "D" and "C"...and even an "E" and "H"...some of our keys are very worn.

thanks for the input..

....and therein lies a potential problem. When buying the 'alleged' NOS blanks off eBay or wherever (buyer beware) and then taking them to your local hardware store, cutting "new" keys off worn existing ones, you may or may not get the new ones to work. BTDT.

It's more work, but I pulled a door lock cylinder out of the door and got the code for that (for doors and ignition key). Then I pulled the trunk lock cylinder out and got the code off of that (for trunk and glove box). Sent the codes to Jesser's and got keys that work flawlessly.

Re: Duplicate Keys...

Keys can be worn but the depth of the cuts usually are not and can be read with the tool for the code.
Always cut keys by code.

Re: Duplicate Keys...

If you have a local GM dealer that has been in business for several years they should still have the 6 cut square and round key tool and should be able to code the key and cut you your new ones.

I've got boxes of Briggs and Stratton GM key blanks from when I worked for Curtis 15 years ago.

I will send you some assuming I have the correct ones if you give me the letter code you need.

i posted them in the for sale forums 15 years ago...

All I have are 68 and back blanks... GM logo Briggs & Stratton with knockouts in tact, though they could be knocked out.

Re: Duplicate Keys...

My brother is a locksmith. I asked him about making me door lock keys for my '67 Corvette. Only the ignition key came with the car. He could make the keys in about 5 minutes if he was in PA - problem is that he lives in Conn. It turns out that there are ONLY 250 possible key cuts that will work for my car and he has the master set of 250 keys! He's mailing them down to me - to be continued.......

Re: Duplicate Keys...

i have the master set fo 33 to 66 GM cars from Curtis..i found it NOS...its on a big chain and has all the combinations...i have used it 100 times..always works for me..the literature say works 95%

it works for about half of the 67-68 keys ive found out, but never tried

I also picked up a grand master LOCK pic set off craigs list for $50..it takes a little work/patience but always works on the old stuff

LPK-620 is the part number..works on everything from 30s to about 77...expensive new..but works..and its gotten me into old cars ive bought every time if i dont have keys..every time
