New Yenko Owner needing some help!
I'm a Newbie to the site. I'm also the owner of a Forest Green 1970 Yenko Deuce. It's VIN: 114270W349789. I recently acquired the car from my good friend, Andy Distad. I just don't know much about the car or its restoration. I did note that in March 1975, Mark F. Mc Donald (IL)was the owner of the car, then it was purchased by Bill Ulseth (TN) on an unknown date, then Mick Price (IL) on an unknown date, then Joe Grom (KY)in March 2002. Before 1975 and after 2002, at least until Andy bought the car, are big blanks!
On March 16, 2015, there is a note from Marlin R Spotts Jr. commending an individual on his description of the car in an eBay listing. It states, "The originality of the engine and trans along with the rear end gears matches the information in my Yenko Deuce Registry". If one (or more) of the members has any information about my car, or knows anything about its restoration, could I please hear from you?! ANY help, input or direction to follow in acquiring more information would be greatly appreciated. Rick |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Rick -- I know the car well. I had a Cortez Silver Yenko Deuce at the same time. Mark was a good friend of mine in Rantoul, Il who passed way too soon. His Mom and Dad had the car -- how long I do not know ... I tried a number of years ago to chase down the green Deuce. I do know that it had damage to the drivers door and Mark "blew up" the engine at one time. As far as I can remember, the engine was rebuilt by Dave Kohler (Kohler Fuel Injection) in Urbana, Il. This was around late 70s early 80s. I think the engine at that time was a 377ci. If the original block was used -- the numbers will match up.
I don't know what other info I may be able to provide but if you have any other Qs -- by all means, contact me. Craig |

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Thanks guys for the info. I did find Jamie's description of the car and sent off a PM. Interesting sidenote: I opened the ashtray this morning and found three time slips. Apparently, Jamie took the car out to Beech Bend Raceway in August of last year. The car turned 12.7 at 111 MPH! Not bad for a 45 year old car!

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Cool! I believe that there is video of the car running on this site from that event. I can post it when I get home if you'd like.

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Hey Bruce;
Many Thanks--I would love to see the video! It's about 105 here in southern Utah. I took the Deuce out for its inaugural spin--no problems. It can still light em up! Temp reached about 180-185 and then stabilized. Oil pressure stayed around 55-60 lbs. Great shakeout after a full Winter off. |

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Congrats on the purchase!
Interesting that the Yenko Inventory Sheet shows W. R. Austin Chev in CT as the selling dealer. I suspect that if Mark in IL had the car in the mid '70's that perhaps it was dealer transferred to Rodgers Chev in Rantoul, IL? |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
A point just in your original post has me thinking. Mark claimed that Dave put together a 377 -- if I still remember my SBC days, that would be a 400 block with a 350 crank (or there abouts). Your post indicates the block is original to the car -- if that is so, I'm wondering if it is in fact a 383 using the original block. I will try and contact Dave Kohler and see if he remembers what he built. We all have slept since then -- LOL Craig

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
I only picked up on the possible originality of the "engine", as opposed to the block, from the comment of Marlin Spotts in March 2015. Honestly, I have no idea if the block is the original, has or has not been repaired/welded or is a replacement. The block casting appears to be casting # 3970010 and there is an additional entry in some of the records referring to 010-V0414-CRE. I'm not sure what this means--help!

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
I have reached out to Dave to see if he remembers what he built for Mark. As soon as I hear something, I will pass on the info to you ... Craig

I don't remember seeing the Deuce much after the sell -- I think she was in the Air Force at Chanute AFB. I think Mark did buy the car from Rogers Chev. The little town of Rantoul, Il had three Deuces running the street for awhile -- Mark's, the Red one, and my Silver Deuce. |

Wow -- laying eyes on the old Deuce from eons ago will be neat ... Craig |

I believe CTB or CTC would have been the correct engine stamp suffixes for the 70 Yenko Deuce. CRE would be correct for an L48 350ci/300hp. CTC, CTB and CRE would share the same casting number 3970010. the Also check the casting date on the bell housing flange just below the distributor, since CRE may have been used on other applications/years. the "V0414" portion would equate to an engine assembled April 14th at the Flint plant. |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Another baffler: There is a note in the records that states, verbatim: Rear--3:55--GM--Believed to be 1 of 3 original.
Opinions? |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Without a window sticker, build sheet, broadcast sheet, or something similar, is it at all possible to find out how my car came originally equipped?
|
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Just heard from Dave and he indicated he did in fact build a 377. He did not remember what happened to the original 010 LT-1 block. So it appears the engine that is in the car now cannot be the "born with" engine.
Also, I was under the impression (could be wrong) that all the Deuces came with a 4:11 gear. Seein' as how the car was running in the high 12's with a 3:55 makes that motor pretty stout. Craig |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
I thought the same thing about the engine/block until I read the comment from Marlin about the "originality". Maybe he will address the issue or at least comment on his 2015 statement.
I also was under the identical impression about the 4:11 gearing until I read the comment about a 1 of 3 3:55. Now I'm just confused! (fairly normal these days) |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Another concern wherein I need some help. I'm on a "Stated Value" insurance policy. Obviously, I know what I paid for the car; but, I really don't have a good feeling as to what I should insure it for. When I called my insurance carrier, they wanted me to insure it for significantly more than I paid for it. Maybe they were just trying to extract a higher premium payment--I'm just not sure.
Comments as to value? |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Glad to see the car is in a good home! I bought the car from Bill Ulseth in Bradford TN. It is a good car. If you look back through the for sale section of this site you can probably still find the ad I placed last fall. It is not the original motor or transmission in the car but they are the correct date codes and casting numbers for an O5D Deuce. The most important part is the original rear is still in the car.
As far as the 3:55 gears I would have to speculate that this may have been a dealer swap as a new or near new car because they are GM gears in the original housing. I feel sure all the Deuces came with the 4:10s. Rick I will give you a call tomorrow and tell you everything I know about the car. Jamie |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Rick -- regardless what the history is on this Deuce ... you have a very nice car with much history. Enjoy the heck out of it. When you get some time -- take some pics of it and post them here. Craig

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
I really want to thank all the members that came to my assistance. I spoke with Jamie yesterday and he provided quite a bit of info on the car. I will now call Bill Ulseth, the owner before Jamie.
I do have a major electrical problem. I posted it on both the technical forum and Yenko specific forum. Hopefully someone can help. I've attached some pics that I took this morning. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_2173.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...g_2167_001.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_2168.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...g_2174_001.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_2177.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...g_2186_001.jpg |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
This is way too cool to lay eyes on that Deuce -- it has been a long, long time. Last time I say her she had a caved in drivers door, dirty, etc. etc. You're going to get much enjoyment out of her ... TAZ (Craig)

Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Man, are we being hit by a Monsoon. Pretty heavy rains, lightning and local flooding! Other than that and 100+ degree temps this time of year, southern Utah is pretty nice!
I really need help with the electrical issue--please see posting on the Yenko specific forum. Many Thanks, Rick PS: I've attached a few more pics. I still have Andy's MN plate on it.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...g_2166_001.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_2169.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_2184.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...g_2185_001.jpg |
Re: New Yenko Owner needing some help!
Hey Taz;
You appear to be the person that knows more about my Forest Green 70 Yenko than anyone else! Do you believe that any "Original" paperwork, or copies still exists anywhere to be found? Things like Sales Agreements, protecto plates, broadcast sheets, build sheets, window stickers, warranty work, service orders, etc. If I could, I would love to get a hold of any early documents pertaining to my car--not for any financial value or gain but to see and understand what the first owner, Mark, was thinking of when he ordered and first took possession and drove the car!
