1967 L78
The 1969 post made me wonder! How many 1967 L78 convertibles are known to exist any way to know how many were built ?
|
Re: 1967 L78
Probably 200 built.
|
Re: 1967 L78
Of the 200 built do you know how many still exist today ?
|
Re: 1967 L78
A couple l78 guys on this site have a running registry. Maybe one will chime in. Phil, zedder, mike p. ?
|
Re: 1967 L78
I'm no expert, but I've heard 100 to 125 built.
|
Re: 1967 L78
Dino, you might be correct. I would rather have the lower number. Brings more of a mystic about the 4K conv camaro!
|
Re: 1967 L78
Three so far, Two on this post and One on craigslist in the Ebay and other section
|
Re: 1967 L78
I know of one other that I seen only once back at Beech Bend in the mid 90's.. Thinking it was from Mo and was originally red/red.
|
Re: 1967 L78
I think Phil S has a Royal Plum car so that makes five
|
Re: 1967 L78
Both of the actual 67 Pacecars were built as L78's. I also owned another 67 Pacecar that was a L78. A survivor 67 L78 Pacecar resides in Iowa.
|
Re: 1967 L78
I know of a pace car that now has a LS6 in it
|
Re: 1967 L78
Two more makes seven correct. There are more L-88's and more ZL1's then 67 4k convertibles. Is there another GM muscle car with so few examples existing today.
|
Re: 1967 L78
Forgot Chris P's Bat Car that makes eight.

Considering the '67 L78 Trim Tag designation, you'd think the survival rate percentage of cars built would be higher for 67's than 69's...both being equal w/ other factors such as verifiable Original Components/Stampings/Paperwork/Pop's etc? ~ Pete |
Re: 1967 L78
Pete,
I agree that a higher percentage of '67s have to be known because of the trim tag call out. With 1138 L78s produced we'd know of many more rags if they represented 10% of production. It seems in the higher performance engines that a lower % of rags is the norm. Factor that with a higher survival rate of rags and my guess is that fewer than 5% were built. It could even be much lower than that. Lets estimate 25 known cars and an 80% survival rate and you end up with a production number less than 3%. Of course it's all guess work but it seems pretty clear that the '67 L78 rags are some of the rarest high performance cars of the era. |
Re: 1967 L78
I know of an early built one in West Virginia. Cowl tag says 4P but it's P Plate designates the L78 engine. Been setting for years in a garage. Going to fix it up day.
|
Re: 1967 L78
I think the 67 L78's in general and the 67 L78 verts in particular just don't get the recognition they deserve, these cars are some of the rarest GM high performance cars ever built. Fewer than 5% equals 56 cars originally produced with less than 10 known today.
|
Re: 1967 L78
But they are not 427's.
|
Re: 1967 L78
67 Z28's are more valued in the small block world, and there are many more 67 Z's than 67 L78 verts.
|
Re: 1967 L78
But they were the highest horsepower Camaro produced in 67. How many of the known cars have born with engines?

There are fewer known 66 and 67 L78 Chevelle convertibles known today. I believe the number of documented 66 L78 Convertibles known is 3. I have never seen a real documented 67 L78 Chevelle convertible but one is apparently scheduled to run through Mecum. |
Re: 1967 L78
Did George's high option Marina Blue Camaro get counted from MCACN?
|
Re: 1967 L78
No, that makes nine so far, did not know about the 67 L78 Chevelle convertibles that has got to be the lowest
|
Re: 1967 L78
i remember seeing a 4k vert at carlisle years ago...it was that torquoise color. I believe it was an automatic also.

Re: 1967 L78
Via the db, just shy of 20% of 67 L78's are convertibles.
Interesting, that's also true for 69. |

It must have been added as the T-400 was not available in 1967 with a L-78. |
Re: 1967 L78
20% is approx 220 cars, the 9 cars listed equals less than 5% still remaining today. There may be more cars yet to be discovered, but I don't think the number will increase by much, maybe 1 or 2. Thanks Kurt for the information. That leaves approx 900 coupes that were built, any guess how many coupes are known to exist today.

Re: 1967 L78
Friend of mine has a red on red L78 coupe with 22K original miles and 1 repaint. Car is amazing.Sold out of Reedman in Langhorn Pa. Does anyone have an approximate date when the first batch of 67L78 cars were built? Just curious.

Re: 1967 L78
I believe there are about 50 l78 verts accounted for. Couple of guys say they have them on their private registry
|
Re: 1967 L78
march/april 1967 ?
|
Re: 1967 L78
2 Canadian cars that I have seen over the years and a member here from Alabama has one that he is restoring...

Re: 1967 L78
Zedder: Any more info on the gold car on c-list, did you see a pic of the trim tag ? Unofficial count of twelve is a long way from 50. Of the 20% number from CRG does the private registry confirm 50 that were built or 50 still remaining today ?
|
Re: 1967 L78
luzl78: Do you have any numbers for remaining Coupes ?
