WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
I have several 3138 HURST Shifter Assy's that have been disassembled and Clear ZINC PLated.
I'm looking for expertise in reassembly ??? WHO, WHERE, Estimated $$$$$ I may also need ONE missing lever that attaches to M-21 side cover (70 Camaro) |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Don't know if they still offer the service, but Hurst used to do that, and IIRC, when i checked into it in the 90's it was very reasonable.
UPDATE: just went to the Hurst site, and apparently they still do offer the service. Looks way more expensive than I remembered. Hurst rebuild service. If your pieces are in good condition, there is no reason you can't assemble them yourself. They aren't that complex. |

Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Mike Angelo gave great tutorial which emboldened me to plate and rebuild my shifter myself. I'll see if I can find it.....
P.S. It was straightforward. |

Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
I think once you get a price from Pete, you will find it will cost you well over $500. Another option is buy and original shifter already rebuilt and plated from Heartbeat City for $595 and sell the used one and maybe have less money involved. I know someone who bought one from HB and it is on a concours Z and he is very pleased with it. He even got a discount if you watch their website.

Geezz -- I know there is inflation ... but I had a shifter rebuilt by Hurst back in the late 70s and it cost less than a $100 ... If the parts are available somewhere -- it is not rocket science to disassemble/rebuild if you're not concerned with plating, etc. Fit/function is the key ... TAZ |

thats if Pete replates everything etc..the OP said he already had everything plated and it just needed to be assembled....and he owns the stuff.. Petes stuff is beyond show quality, and he stands behind his product...worth every penny.. its 250 from hurst when i checked this summer...just a mechanism rebuild, no plating... |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Yes Pete does nice work, but not cheap, all I was trying to say is for his price you can buy a complete shifter body....not that I am a big fan of Jim at HB

Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Thanks for all the above advice and comments.....I had no idea it would
be so expensive to re-assemble my CLEAN, PLATED parts. I may (or may not) be able to do this myself, but with no experience didn't want to struggle with it. I'll continue to ask my 70' Camaro contacts for further suggestions. |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
I took mine completely apart and cleaned and lubed it (didnt want to replate it) and it wasnt bad at all

Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
What about the rubber bushings where the shift rods go in how is that redone ? Will the metal ones found in a Pit Pac fit the levers correctly?

Those metal and plastic bushings are for aftermarket shifters with a larger hole. No one re makes the OEM bonded on seal. Pete Serio has nice fitting replacement rubbers on his WWW. I think it is presision Pontiac. His link is posted on pg 1 of this thread. Mike |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Correct Mike.
Link to his website for Chuck and FYI rebuild without plating services is $239. With all new plating services it's $499 http://precisionpontiac.net/Shifter_FAQ.aspx Bushings are available in his store. |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
they make a replacement rod bushing for the levers that looks like the original 1969 molded on bushing. They are not molded on but look better then the 1970 and later style replacement rod bushing
also check the springs when rebuilding a shifter as the original springs can get soft after 40 plus years |
Re: WHO restores/rebuilds the OEM 3138 HURST Shifters
Chuck...My 2 cents...Pete did mine and it was flawless!!

People like to get paid for spending shop time with people, answering questions, laying parts out, assembling components, sending pictures and how too's, etc as that is what pays the bills. The fact that you are concerned about reassembling yours without experience is precisely why you contact experts in their various fields as that is what they are trained to do and they have to get paid for their time or there is no point staying in business. I use several subcontractors for this very same reason, because they can do a better job of it than I can and in less time so I can be working on something else. You make a pretty good buck in what you do for a living, some of us just need to pay our bills as well. Send it off to an expert, let them assemble it and you install it and use it the way it was meant to be. I have done several of these shifters for sYc members but it does cost money. |

Wanting to know time frame when HURST Stopped Plating 3138 Shifter Bodies
Clear Zinc and Changed over to Plating them Manganese Phosphate (Charcoal Black) (Could have been Zinc Phosphate??) Is there an aftermarket kit with Muncie Shifter Arms and Rods and all the pieces to connect to the HURST 3138 Original Shifter |
