Rally Green Z/28 - Day II
I've been sitting on the fence for the past 6 months but finally decided that a Day II finish is in order while finishing off my 69 Z/28. It's only fitting since the car was in Day II trim from 69-71 before being modified as a full time Super Stocker. The new paint will be left factory original and I am now building a high rpm 302 with a stud girdle, pro stock rods, a healthy (bottom of the page) solid cam, and still waiting fir the new Trick Flow 186 style aluminum heads. I picked up an Edelbrock TM1 Tarantula intake and will top it with a 750 mechanical carb and maybe some vintage valve covers? Still thinking a vintage Accel ignition setup with a Sun SST-90 Tach. Interior will remain stock but doubt I'll be installing the console at this point.
Going to stick with with the T/T wheels for now but will add a full set of Coker Pro Trac's front and rear (215/15 front and 275/60 rear) and maybe some air shocks out back. Planning on re-painting the J-bars yellow and ordered new water slide decals for them yesterday. I'll install a vintage scatter-shield and will mount an M22 box behind the high rpm small block with a performance clutch. The 12 bolt currently has 4:10 gearing but that may be changed up to to 4:88 or 5:13's once I get things rolling along. I don't want to chop the freshly restored floors so I'll likely stick with the factory Hurst shifter and will run vintage gauges under dash. Holler if you have any cool day II ignition parts or period correct aftermarket valve covers. Looking for some NOS Hurst air shocks as well. https://preview.ibb.co/jg093a/IMG_0387.jpg |
Re: Going Day II with my Z/28
What paint system did you use? Looks great! TAZ

Painter was Ron Smith. He used a Dupont product and we went with a custom tint (omitted 5% black) and he mixed in some fillers with fine metallic to get the depth and finish where I wanted it. It's hard to capture with an iphone picture but the metallic really dances in the sunlight and the depth is fantastic. I'll get a copy of the mixture printed if anyone needs it. Color was spot on with the original paint that was in the jambs prior to painting it. https://preview.ibb.co/ePd1Gv/IMG_7205.jpg |

Thanks Earl. Please find out what DuPont system he used ... TAZ

ENGINE RUN STAND
I have a couple motors being built right now and decided to order an engine run stand for testing purposes and initial run-in of the solid lifter cams. With four engines being finished up over the next year, it'll help when checking for issues and leaks before putting them into the cars. It's nice to run an engine in while not have having to crawl around under a car looking for leaks, and makes it easier for lashing the valves after some run time on each motor. I wish I had my own personal dyno but this is fun to play with while testing some engine builds. ~ First up was the 355ci motor with aluminum heads & a solid roller that went into the blue 68 car last month. ~ Next up is a purpose built 8000rpm 302 motor for the green 69 car. Simply put, that one's gonna be just plain nasty. https://preview.ibb.co/hQkCpF/IMG_4742.jpg |
About to start the engine build of a high rpm solid roller 302 for the 69 car. I'll need to reinforce the bottom end really well and use some good rods in the short block, and still need to decide what heads & valve train I'll use? I have fuelies, and other iron heads here but will likely run the new 186 aluminum heads from trick flow if they ever release them? If not I'll run a set of AFR's as they'll need to be something that really flows well on the upper end between 4K and 8K for some fun little pulls around here. I've started collecting day II parts including an Ansen Bell, an M22 trans that I'll be using, and some Lakewood J bars to keep the tires from hopping. I now have a nice trio of Sun Gauges that are on their way courtesy of Dave Siltman, and still hoping to find a Lakewood 3-point roll barif anybody has the correct one sitting around? I have a couple sets of Vintage wheels to choose from now and I'm now on the hunt for some other things including;
I'm going to start assembling the car this week and while it'll be nicely restored, the theme will be to groom it into a super clean Day II car to keep in line with its provenance as an ex Super Stock car. All the Day 1 parts I've been collecting will be stored off to the side for future use should they be needed. Lots of pics to start following as the assembly gets started next week. |
Was going to run the blue line Sun Gauges but have settled on stock console gauges with a green line tach
|
Might be nice to find this model of tach that appears in the car from 1973. Looks like an auto meter tach on the dash when it raced in the early 70's. Going to call Kym on this one and see if he recalls what it was.
|
I have a 1969-70 vintage set of Hooker headers if you're looking for authentic stuff.
|
I think you will love the car more as DAY-2 than original:-)
I wanted those gauges for my car but couldn't "swing it" :-( Keep the updates coming!!! 4K to 8K wowza!!!! Ryan |
I recognize those gauges.....love it when great parts go to a great car and home.
Did I mention I love Rallye Green :D Dan |

Your fine work on a Day II Chevelle had really caught my attention when researching builds here on sYc, and I then saw all of the work Mike completed on Grady's Camaro. I quickly found myself saying "Hello Day II" and said it's time to get off the fence. I'm hoping it turns out as nice as some of the members cars that have inspired me here, including Dave's 69 Camaro SS. Cheers |
"Day 2" is what we all did.....and yours will just terrific.....bring it to MCACN when she is finished :D

Graeme is a first-class guy all the way. I, too, love the Rallye Green and always have. Please keep this thread alive so we can follow the build. My engine guy has a run stand and is now thinking of buying his own dyno. Gorgeous car that'll be a looker and a screamer!!!

Killer score on the gauges!

Found a few more pieces thanks to JD (ssl78396) that are being shipped up from Cali. NOS Roll control, NOS 380-0010 shocks, and the correct 50000/54010 Lakewood bar which will be restored to new condition before being installed.

Cool stuff!

Fun stuff for sure! Nice job on searching for authentic equipment.

Looking good Graeme! Glad you found a Lakewood bar, they're getting to obtain as you well know. please keep this thread alive!!!!

Roger that Dave
Next up, I need to find some original Cragar SS rims. Anyone have a nice set of 15" wheels available? I'd like to find 8's and 4.5" wheels in show condition. |
Recently picked up this SST-90 NOS Tach from another member here and sent it down to Ron at Williamson's Instruments to have it converted. The EB-9A was converted and wires like normal, but now has digital internals that don't require calibrating or servicing (no internal batteries). Not sure which car it'll be used in just yet, but it'll go into one of them.

Will do. I can tell you that Ron Belisle was excellent to deal with.
Over the winter months I'll get it installed and connected to this vintage Mallory ignition kit I just picked up. These parts are now being sent out for restoration work and will help complete a vintage ignition kit for the DZ 302 in the Camaro. I really like this Rev Pol Switch for the dash and trust it'll add a cool vibe mounted next to the sun gauges under the dash. It's slowly coming together nicely thanks to some fellow collectors here on sYc. :youguysrock: https://preview.ibb.co/fqvgKF/Ignition.jpg https://preview.ibb.co/dqE8zF/Switch.jpg https://preview.ibb.co/h9GozF/Coil.jpg |
Nice addition. I actually picked up a Mallory Double Life and its in the process of being shipped.

I'm not entirely sure...but have read that these were the predecessor to the Mallory dual point and that the Rev Pol switch reverses the polarity to give you a higher intensity spark. I know that it uses a special coil which is like 2 coils in one and functions as noted below. Jim Linder from Bubba's Ignition is going to rebuild this one for me and says they are really cool setups! He rebuilds & restores them down to stock, or can also convert them using one of two available Pertronix kits for Mallory's. I might try it stock and if I don't like it I can always convert it later. :)
Found this in an old Yenko thread. Quote:

Looks like I need to talk to Mike Mancini and/or Sam to see if he can copy the docs he has for this unit. Hopefully someone has the wiring instructions as well. Those would be helpful when it comes time to install this. :)
I'm also hoping those quotes of it being stable at high rpm ranges hold true as I plan to buzz this 302 to the moon when it's all done. |
I spoke with Jim today regarding these Rev-Pol units and have agreed that it'll be left running with the points and condenser once restored. He said the 4 lobe cams work fantastic and these units make a great spark right up to 9000+ rpm without bounce. He's currently running one in his dragster and has done so for the past 10 years.
Looking for some NOS wires for this one now. I'm thinking orange... |

Can you still run an old style CD box like a Delta Mark or a Jacobs/Motion with your setup?
|
Should be able to run Capacitive Discharge although there is a CD specific coil that Mallory made, but am not sure why that would be necessary. I plan on using a Mallory CD setup on my Chevelle for the MCACN show. So, I'll let you know how it goes.
Edit: I believe I have original instructions for wiring a Mallory CD set up. I'll take a look. |
Yes, you can run a CD Box with the Mallory 4 cam dual point. But ONLY With Suppression Type Ignition wires. Cannot Use Solid Core Wires.
Pertronix also offers an electronic conversion for the 4 Cam. It's the series/Phase II W/O Rev Limiter. If Sam can't find his instructions, I have a set I can text copies of. He's also correct on the CD Electronic Ign Coil. They are used for the Amp variations plus to sustain the excessive volts well above 40,000. My droid pics are too large to post. I also can't resize them. |
I got a set of Rev-Pol instructions and date sheets from Sam last week. I am now awaiting a test of the ignition and coil to see how everything fairs. If by chance the coil is weak, I'd be interested in learning more about the CD and will also wait to hear how Sam makes out. For now, I am searching for a set of solid core wires to use with the RP kit.
Interesting stuff here so please feel free to add on. If you want to email pics to me, I can resize them and post them here. oldgasoline101 at gmail is the address to send pics. G. :) |

Here you go. Note that instructions shown are for the Mallory Super CD for both points and IR setups in the distributor. Also, the coil shown (model 28880) is a dedicated coil for the CD ignition system. However take a look at the note regarding "High Performance Option" (half way down the page) it states that a Voltmaster II coil (model 28675) can be used.

Sam this forum is so awesome with you guys having parts like these so we can learn more about them, thanks for the pictures clears up a lot of questions............

I'll second that one. Great info Sam...:youguysrock:
