1969 SS 350 engine pics?
I'm looking for some pictures of the original L48 non-ac engine bay to use as reference. Things like painted or non-painted oil cap, etc.
Here's what I have. All help is much appreciated! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-urov2404.jpg |

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
I believe your oil cap should be unpainted.

I believe oil cap should be painted... Unpainted for chrome or finned covers.
|
Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
My restoration/paint guy believes the oil cap should be unpainted and chrome to match the chrome air cleaner (bright accents debate). But I believe, and the consensus over at CRG, is that these L48 engines with the non-chrome valve covers came built down the paint line and painted with the oil caps on, then dressed with air cleaners and wires and stickers. I have bet him lunch, if I can prove it...
Anyway - great pics Phil thank you, lots of details to see and very nicely finished. My 350 is actually a 4 speed, but in its very early years the smog equip was removed and the exhaust manifolds were replaced with automatic ones. They are correctly dated originals, just not original to this car sadly. So my air cleaner is correct without the stove pipe. Something I can work on later when I can afford the smog equip. |

When you are ready for the smog system, give Bill Hodel a call. He will have everything you need. Call at 330-832-0871...

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
The part of the spark plug heat shields that attach to the block are painted orange and the more visible parts are left as-is.

Mine came with painted covers, but I added the aluminum covers to it. 4 spd with smog. Pass side smog tube is not correct in these pics. It was a 68 tube. |

1968 smog tube on pass side is wrong and technically so are the valve covers. |

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Exactly... That is believed to be Tonawanda detail on assembly with the painted exhaust manifolds as the visual indicator.

If trying to clarify anything of that engine pic, it's Joe C's '69 Nova taken before delivery while still on dealer lot. Click here... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...opics/323420/1 ~ Pete |

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Awesome! Yes, this is the only pic I have ever seen of an original L48 350 Tonawanda engine. Darrell has posted it a few times for me, so I finally saved it. And until now, I hadn't read the story behind it - which significantly adds to the authenticity of the photo.
I don't know if this will win me the lunch bet on the painted oil cap - but I will feel good about it. Thanks! |
Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
I would say you won the bet.

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Could someone educate me as to why some had a chrome air cleaner lid and some had a black one? Was it the SS option?

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Verne,
IMO...OP wanted to know how to properly detail a 1969 era 350/300 and there are multiple prospectives introduced in an attempt to assist and answer his question, they are: Bright accent vs non bright accents. SS with cowl induction equipment vs standard hood equipment Tonawanda engine Mfg assembly detail vs Flint engine Mfg assembly detail. Images supplied from both Camaro and Nova. So yea it looks a bit confusing... the long and the short of it is that the engine was mostly painted orange the primary differences being the amount of over spray and assembly order differences between both engine manufacturing plants. |

My question was: Why do some have a chrome air cleaner lid and others (like mine) have a black lid? That has nothing to do with the engine plant. Was that an owner added detail, or were certain models treated differently? Verne |

I believe that was the trigger for the chrome lid, Verne. The L48 in a 69 Chevelle or 69 Impala came with a black lid, while the same engine in a Nova or Camaro (both only available with that engine in the SS version) had the chrome lid. Not sure about the 69 Corvette with L48 |
Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Thanks for answering my question Bill. There isn't a trace of chrome anywhere on the 350 in my ELC. (it's the original engine)

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Verne, IMO....Bill is right on the SS being the key.
The bright accent issue has popped up repeatedly over the years and Chevtolet's own advertising from the period does nothing to settle the issue for many however. I would blame dealers for some of the confusion. Cross flag aluminum covers were cheap and so were chrome lids to dress a car for sale. |
Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Hi Verne - I've discovered a few interesting things in the 1969 Chevrolet Sales Album regarding the "bright accents" and different engines and models. Since you asked specifically here about the Chevelle, this is from the sales album.I know the sales album is certainly not the bible of what was actually produced, but it is a guide for what a buyer was told they would receive...

Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
Thank you
That info confirms my air cleaner would be a std all black. Now, if you add the SS option, things probably change. Not to change the subject of the thread, but I wonder if the suspension items mentioned might be different on the ELC since it was officially in the truck line? Verne |

Verne </div></div> Hi Verne - my apologies because I thought you were asking about the Chevelle. First, I don't think the bright engine options were directly related to the SS option, it appears the bright engine accents were related to engine size and model. Somewhat analogous but not the same. If ELC means El Camino, I have a section for this but it is only the Aug sales promotion material without the details of options, and yes its in the very sparse section of the binder labeled "Trucks". |
Re: 1969 SS 350 engine pics?
For those interested in the bright engine accents debate, I started a thread in CRG.

I think we are agreeing that the L48 had bright accents on the camaro? This attached image is from the Revision Guide to the sales album picture you posted. Note that the chrome oil filler cap is absent...leaving only the chrome air filter lid as the sole piece in an L48 birght accent option. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ght_accent.jpg |
