Spray adhesive

I am putting some vintage stickers and decals on the inside of my trunk lid. The old water slide decals I can work with. I also have a few adhesive backed items that have at least partially dried out. Does anyone know of a good adhesive (spray?)that would work for the stickers?.

This is one of the stickers I am working with. Some of the adhesive is dried up and some of it is still a little sticky

Any of the better spray adhesives should be effective, but you would need to clean up any excess. Another good outcome might be double sided tape and trim to match the decal, stick on and you are good to go.

3 M makes a good spray adhesive.

A good glue stick also works great for that stuff Bill. I used a glue stick to adhere an original PA. inspection sticker to the windshield of both of my cars with very good success.
Gotta clean the surface well and your golden.

Should work for your vintage decals too.

Thank you for all the help with this.

I use 3M 77 for lots of non-Camaro uses and a couple of Camaro uses. Works great.

The 3M adhesive is fine for what you are doing but be cautious of this or any other spray adhesive if doing headliner or insulation work. It does not stick long term. Absolutely worthless for headliner and in most cases insulation in my opinion. I used to use it to make vinyl repairs such as when a door panel vinyl released around the edged or gluing insulation to the inside cowl area under the dash (pictured) only to come back weeks later and find the insulation had literally fallen off the back of the cowl or the vinyl had released. I followed the directions to the letter. Does not seem to matter whose spray I used. Now it is strictly gun applied with a professional grade adhesive.

However with regards to decals I have had very good luck with spray adhesives. One word of caution especially on paper decals such as posi decals, spray it on in very thin coats or it will react similar to spraying straight water on it and will bleed right through and stain.

Rick, I have door panels to recover on my chrysler 300G. Vinyl material to stick on a fiberboard like material. What is the adhesive you use?
Thanks
Bill

Use this. Spray or brush, both surfaces, wait till it is dry to touch.
Good stuff. See what Rick says too, rattle can crap SUX
Google it, got my last on ebay and I would bet Amazon has it too.

Thanks Mike I bet that would work

Formica (yes the laminate co) also make a good quality contact adhesive. I've used it for many yrs on counter tops and also many times when contact adhesive is needed with the car resto's. It can also be sprayed, brushed, or rolled on.

Which adhesive used depends on the type of material you are gluing. Vinyl top, headliner, foam, etc. We also use the Dap adhesive for headliners as it is readily available and have had good luck with it. My past upholsterer used a different commercial grade gun adhesive but I do not recall what it was. The 3M77 and/or 3M90 spray can adhesives are so so for the home DIY'er but I have to order 3M90 as no one carries it around here. However and again I do not suggest using it if you can avoid it as long term can be an issue.

For anyone interested, I ended up heating the sticker with a hair dryer put it in place and continued heating it and it stuck like new. Thanks for all the help

perfect Bill. Great idea!

This 3M transfer tape is what you use to make stickers like new again. https://www.amazon.com/3M-Adhesive-T.../dp/B00P26Z04I

I tried to reglue my sagging headliner in my 79 z/28 with 3M 77 spray glue. It lasted about 2 months and now its fallen back down. :mad2:

So, on a sagging headliner (one piece, early 90's car), I am guessing the best way to remedy is to remove the whole lining and spray new adhesive.

What would be the adhesive of choice? I don't think the contact cement would work, as it would bleed through the material.

Go back to post #10 in this thread. The rattle can glue has very limited usage as noted already.

Mike

Lynn 02-19-2018 08:27 PM

Mike: Wouldn't that bleed through the thin fabric?

m22mike 02-19-2018 10:23 PM

It might Lynn. Not sure on those type liners.

Mike
