Big Block Bill is very close to that crash site.

I shouldn’t have watched that

I watched the Air Disasters Cable Show on this crash. Very sad and all because of the way they reinstalled the engine not in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

When I was in college I had a part time job doing line service on corporate jets. I worked around the mechanics all the time and I remember the first time I saw them installing safety wire on nuts/bolts on the engine pieces. Having worked on cars and not being used to seeing this, I said something to the mechanics about it and they said you don't want to loose engine parts at 30,000 feet. Makes sense I thought... LOL

I was back home in Chicago after graduation from college. We lived five miles from the airport when that DC10 went down. I read the list of casualties in the Tribune and my friend and coswimmer at University of Wisconsin that I just said goodbye to a few days earlier was listed as he was flying home to San Pedro, CA. I didn't find out until years later it was his father, also named David Coughlin.

This video@ the 2:05 mark shows a very graphic reason how this happened..

Crush 05-28-2019 05:54 PM

Wow!!

Mr70 05-28-2019 06:26 PM

Was told one of the Mechanics who performed this engine service operation, committed suicide shortly after the crash.

I have been fascinated since you’ve posted this info as my son is going to school to be an Aviation techician. I share these videos with him as a reminder of doing things right always and to never cut corners as in these examples it makes a difference between life and death. It’s a significant responsibility!

Huge respect for your Son.
I took Aircraft construction classes for 2 years during High School, and this accident really hit home with me for that reason alone back then, not to mention living next to it.
As Rich said earlier, installing safety wire on nuts because you don't want to loose engine parts at 30,000 feet could never have been more apparent.

I lived in Skokie as a 14 year old at the time and remember the crash well. What a tragedy that was.
