1969 Nova shifter help

Hi
I want a hurst shifter to replace the factory Muncie shifter in my Nova. I did a few searches and found some good info. It appears I need a 1.5" offset to work with my console.

So I found this on ebay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1970-C...53.m1438.l2649

I think it will work but the chrome stick also has a offset to it. Will it be too much offset?

Thanks for any advice.

Pete

Crash is a member of this sight and is a Hurst expert. If you contact him I'm sure that he has all of the correct pieces for you.

The shifter listed in the catalog's won't work, if you have a '69 with a console you need this one - not listed in any catalog. I got mine from Jody Haag of Jody's Transmissions, fits perfect.

my old Hurst catalog lists the 1969 Nova shifter with console 391 7875

1969 Nova with console shifter 391 7879 is the replacement that comes with just shifter body and without the stick

the stick they list is the 4106

some people like to change the stick out for the 7236 or the 7436

Were those seat belt holders an option for the Nova?
Thanks

Hi
Thanks for that! I did read some posts from years ago that you had talked about your 69 SS shifter search.

I also talked with crash about the shifters.

Thanks!

Mine have those also. But not sure on the option. Maybe it was part of the SS package.

What's the difference between that 391 7879 shifter and a 69 Camaro shifter?

Nova SS package...

The exterior and interior trim options including seats, consoles, gauges, colors, moldings, etc. had no connection to the SS Package. The only items that were unique, beyond the driveline, were the hood louvers, SS emblems and blackout front grill and headlite bezels.

the 69-72 Nova (with console 7879 and 7875) and 68-72 Chevelle Hurst Shifter body has an offset design using a 90 degree angle. (same design but used a different offset )

the 67 to 69 Camaro shifter body has an offset design using more like a 45 degree angle

The 68-72 Nova is confusing because Hurst used a different shifter for console and non console , used the Camaro shifter for 68 Nova with console only, and used at least 4 different installation kits

the picture shows a 67-69 Camaro Hurst shifter body on the left and the 68-72 Chevelle on the right

I believe they were standard with the bucket seat option. If you wanted bucket seats in a Nova it also required the deluxe interior option which upgraded things like the door panels, carpeting, bright trim on the dome light, day/night mirror, cig liter, glove box light, dome switch in the pass door jamb, etc...along with those seat belt holders, but I think the other two buckles go into some plastic clips that go on the bucket seat bases - not sure if these plastic ones were factory though, might have been an accessory.

Thanks Joe.
That confirms what I was thinking I saw - slightly different designs, but pretty much the same effect of moving the handle over 2-3 inches. They might not be in the same spot, but look really close.

I ended up buying the whole shifter kit, brand new from Shifterdoc.

I should have it soon. Then im going to remove the transmission and take it apart over the winter. Then I will install the new shifter. Fun times ahead.

JoeC 10-09-2019 01:28 PM

what shifter and install kit did you get ?

do you know the part numbers

JoeC, these are the numbers.

#391-7875 ( mechanism)
# 373- 7173 ( install kit)
#391-4106 ( Chrome stick)

JoeC 10-10-2019 01:52 PM

My old Hurst catalog lists the 1969 Nova with console and Muncie install kit as 373 7131

JoeC 10-10-2019 03:40 PM

I received my shifter. Looks and feels fantastic. I’m going to be taking the tranny out soon and I’ll mount it at that time .
Thanks for everyone’s help

I think you'll like it! Make sure you adjust the shifter stops properly, or you'll ram the shifter arm into the console plate - apparently, this was done on Benjamin's Nova a few times in the past!

Thank you so much for that advice Marlin. I can see where it would be a problem.

I’m confident that this shifter will be far superior to the factory Muncie. It’s pretty loose and gets jammed often.
