I don't like it. Several things don't look right. I'm sure guys with a lot more experience than me will be along to weigh in.

Restamp.

Jonesy 11-25-2019 06:51 PM

Looks like a restamp for sure

Steve Shauger 11-25-2019 07:19 PM

Somebody is lathe crazy but atleast they took the time to crudely "dot" the ends of the straightlines on the number 4.

Run for the hills......and stay away from it.

Agreed. Cut down a bit too much with a lathe. 3.819 to 3.813 is the nominal diameter I have found to be what distributors are normally. Any smaller than that in either direction, either across the stamped numbers or 90º out, I'd call it a fake. Most are not smaller in the area where the numbers are stamped. Be especially leery of anything coming out of Tennessee, but also Angola Indiana, although fakes are coming out of other places too.

One more thing to add on this particular unit and to keep an eye out for in the future searches. The area just above the machined diameter where the numbers are is also a machined diameter. On this one, it is so corroded it now appears to be a cast diameter. This means that at one time the entire distributor was this corroded, but now the stamped area is not. You may be able to see this on other machined surfaces also.

They are getting better. But this one has a way to go.

Unfortunately a restamp. That one went thru one of the big rebuilders who use steel shot to clean their parts before rebuilding. That's why it's so rough at the cap retaining area. I just sold one here and if the purchaser wants to put up the pics you will see the differences.

That thing has been on a strict diet, much thinner now! LOL

distributor

Thanks for all the comments. I got this with a parts lot sale. I thought it was a repro, just wanted to check with the experts. What are people paying for a re-stamp like this, for someone who just wants the numbers and cant afford a real one. Thanks.

Last restamp I had (also came with a pile of parts) I sold for $150 on ebay. Represented it as a restamp.

Personally, I wouldn't put a re-stamp like that, or any other one for that matter on my car. It detracts from any originality you might have if you care. I'm not a purist as I like day 2, but the pic you posted screams at people who know what they're looking at. I was being nice in my original post... I'd rather take a real dizzy from even a Cadillac or something that is factory correct looking, just the wrong number. I have my 1111498 on my born with motor in the corner and an 1111500 with a Pertronix III that I run on my play motor. Unless you used a mirror and knew the correct number, you'd never know it wasn't my original dizzy.

Ok then, nice rant, I only wanted an opinion on the stamp. I would never sell it as a original. Again, only asked what they are worth as a re-stamp. I am sure there are many people with re-stamps in there car, there choice.

Whoa... Back the truck up. Didn't know this was something you were trying to sell. You don't want opinions? Don't post on an open forum. I thought this was something you were looking at buying. As far as a being some people's choice to use re-stamps, of course it is. I couldn't care less.

Youd probably get 250 to 300 for it on ebay. It has a 532 ccw shaft which is worth some money and from a few feet away looks much better than the pep boy and autozone remans that restampers use as cores for restamps. It also looks like it's ready to use.
