Picked up this Original Paint 69 recently
 

I recently bought this L46 Convertible. Original side pipe car, original paint, interior, tank sticker. Had been in a garage for over 20 years not running. Went through several service issues and have been enjoying driving it. Still a few things to do. PS, PB and the L46 with side pipes make this car very enjoyable to drive. I have a set of correct bias ply tires to go on the car which match the original spare in the tub. Small white stripe Good Years.

What a great looking Vette. Congrats! That's one of my target car's. A 69 Monaco Orange 427 Vette with side pipes and Fender louvers. Back in 87 I was in the process of buying a 69 Daytona Yellow coupe 427/390 4 speed with Cragar Mags with really low miles for $15K in Worcester Ma. area and the owner backed out of the deal after I said I'd buy it. I wonder where that car is today.

And the L46 was the only 1969 Corvette engine that could not be ordered with an automatic transmission.

That is a great question, I have not looked into it. Will check it out. I have a lot of extra time on my hands now, ha ha. Maybe just St Louis quality of 1969!

I believe the dimples in the fiberglass around the headlight doors tell the tale. The heavy nose droops over time but the hood stays where it is because of the front mounted hinges. It's a C3 thing.

In your free time switch the valve covers back to the correct side ( oil fill should be on the drivers side toward the rear ) Lets hear the story how you found it and where

Not that great of a story really. I called a friend about parts, and he told me that Streetside Classic cars asked him to go look at a 69 Vette that was not running and the older lady wanted to sale it. He went and looked at it and it had been sitting in a garage for over 20 years due to the husbands death years ago. Friend bought it got it running and asked me if I knew anyone that wanted an OG paint MO 69 Vette L46 with side pipes tank sticker OG drive train. I said well Dah maybe me! Went and looked at it and bought it. I have done a few things to it and still need to rebuild the smog pump and buy smog tubes. The car drives fantastic. PS PB is nice. The original seats are really comfortable too. When my buddy got the car PO had taken the side pipes off because his daughter burnt her leg. Under car pipes were on it when he got it. He put the side pipes on it, and painted the cheap covers. It needs better chrome covers on it. I have the original MC and brake booster, both need to be rebuilt. Smog is all original and dated to the car.

Actually the dimples are a result of the aluminum rivets on the header bar corroding and expanding. I have the same issue on my 70 LT-1.

Apparently, if you are very careful, you can do a repair without painting, but it is a PITA.

Plan to attack mine when I have the body off the frame.

I have discussed it at length with people who have done it...
They say to do it without removing the body from the frame and with mindset of saving original paint - is about a 100-150 hour job.
The entire headlamps assemblies must be removed and removing the radiator and radiator support allow a heck of a lot more room.
Doing it with the car inverted or at least rotated on it's side would surely cut off a significant number of hours.

The sun was at the right angle to show the rivet pop on this car. It is not bad at all when you are looking at the car. I personally would do nothing about it but that is just me.

Bumps
 

I had the bumps on my 69 "repaired" 40 years ago. I wish now that I hadn't. Now the repairs are starting to show. The bumps looked better. I have also seen on other boards where people feel better buying a car with the bumps. They know at least that part of the car has not been molested. There was a post on another board outlining the procedure to address the bumps without disturbing the paint. As stated, it is very labor intensive, but the people who did it were glad they chose that method.

My investigation revealed the same. I am replacing a rusty frame anyway, so figured it would be best to do it with the body off the frame.
