Fremont Ca. GM Plant

Many members on this Yenko site own, or have owned automobiles that were built at this Fremont Plant, including myself.
I was given these mint commemorative folders in 1990 from the chief of security at this GM Plant, Mr. Robert Gonsalves. I worked for the local water district (ACWD) with Mr. Gonsalves son, Steve, Steve told his dad that I was a GTO enthusiast. Several weeks later Steve comes to work and hands me this large packet of from his dad. It was souvenirs from the Grand Opening in March 1964. I was speechless. Here is the information and color photos in order from within this dedication packet. The first two photos of the plant. Summer time. Winter time. This photo shows the UAW office with red roof across the street. |
That is neat stuff to have.
My '67 Camaro was built at that facility. |
I own 2 69 ss chevelles that were built at the Fremont plant. Kinda funny that both cars I accidentally found in Michigan were both built in the Fremont plant. Thanks for sharing.

----Very cool, Chris! That plant is huge. Drivetrain parts (engine, etc.) must have been shipped in constantly. Amazing that thy could keep everything in order.....Bill S

Roll test was always a very desirable job for the workers. I have video of my car doing 100 MPH on the rollers at Norwood and the engine echo through that portion of the plant was tremendous.

Preparing the site.
Construction of the plant and the water tank. Vintage cars in the employee parking lot. Sad, the demolition of the water tank in 1983. |
There was a GM plant in Framingham Massachusetts that closed up in the early eighties it is now an ADESA Auction site i went there in the early seventies on a plant tour Chevelles & Cutlass & Buick & Pontiac
|
The Fremont drag strip was nearby and in many photos of races you can see the old GM plant in the background.
