Please educate me on these style hoods

I really like these hoods, and I don't know that I'll ever find a used bolt-on one. So I'm thinking about having one made.
Anyone familiar with this style hood and tell me more about them? |

Believe these are different versions of the prostock hood scoop originally for cars with tunnel rams. I think they were available as a scoop only or full fiberglass hood which is pin on. If you want bolt on hood, then you'll likely need to make your own. They are certainly pretty bad-ass. The link is to pictures one of my favorite cars which is a 1973 Motion 454 ZLX Camaro. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kkiqwS5FBc...n+side+frt.jpg |
i know moroso made some in full hood as well as just scoop. not sure if they were the developer ...its an evolution of the grump lump.
|
In the early 70s we used to refer to that as the Sox & Martin hood scoop...Joe

I own one, mine is a Moroso one piece hood. Weighs maybe 10lbs. It has the Moroso decal and part# on the underside. I can get the info later today if you need it? Mine still has a 1970’s lacquer paint job on it. My plan is to install it on my Day2 Camaro someday.

Hoods
Rumbleguts396, in an older post I see detail pics of your hood and shots of the bottom side. I have a stinger one that the bottom side is just like yours. Mine too only weighs about 10 lbs..
Harwood made them and Moroso sold them. |
I don't see that style on their page... call and see if they still have the mold and would make one...:dunno:

Mitch I'm in Chicago, I've bought hoods from Glasstek and VFN over the years, I'd start there.
|
Rumbleguts I'm appreciative of any info. I have only seen two for sale in the last few years, yours and the pic of the tired looking one.
|
LOL I own the tired looking one. It is a Moroso that has never been installed, I has been shuffled around and trade hands a dozen times over the past 40 years. I bought it about 1 year ago.
|
Is it pin on or bolt on? If the latter I'd be interested, I saw the ad too and I dithered. I'm glad to find out where it went, it haunted my dreams that I did not follow up.

I'm running a Glasstek Sunoco hood but have wanted to run a hood just like this.
|
The moroso hood is a pin on, I beleive they were all pin on.
|
I'd still be interested if you ever sold it.
|
Yes, Mine is a pin on also. ROB
|
Yeah in your pics it's very obvious because it looks thinner.
But the other one I was not so sure. Even so I'd be interested in buying the other one because I could have it replicated as a bolt-on, heck I'd even consider going pin-on lol. |

So I did chat with Glasstek and they will mold whatever scoop I find to one of their offerings.
Speedway does sell a few versions of this scoop in different heights. Does it look to you guys like the Moroso hood is molded to a cowl style hood? Here is a pic of one of the Speedway scoops: |
Is this hood for your LS powered car? Wondering if that is also the yellow car that currently has a large pro-stock style cowl induction hood?

For the LS powered car, currently has a Glasstek Sunoco hood.
|
Are you going to be able to fit over the front of the intake with a new (flat?) hood and that pro stock scoop? Looks like you need some height at the front there.

I think I'd have a shot at it fitting. I could also worst case (for Dan) and ask to drive my car down and do a side by side comparison with his old Moroso hood.
I also like the L88 hoods, but as I looked at those hoods the front of the hood will hit my intake. Regarding the Moroso hood, does it look like the scoop is molded to a cowl hood or a ss hood base? If you look at the pic the base is not a base hood. |
Looks like you have your work cut out for you there. The Camaro looks like an old 10.5 drag car that's been through a few conversions over the years? Was this a back halved drag car that was later converted to an LS based 10.5 drag car at some point? What's the back story on the car? Looks like it has stretched wheel openings on the back from former days with tall slicks?
Are you planning to restore it now and convert to a day 2 project? |
When I bought it, it had a 502 BBC crate engine and 8-71 blower with drum brakes. Wheel openings are stretched, had 31 x 18.5 x 15 MT sportsman pros on 15x14s in back.
The first iteration of the car had good 1980's chassis work, good tubs, my buddy all calls it a classis Alston build. The second iteration, someone painted tons of parts purple, through that crate motor in there with the blower. I'd like to do a day 2, wheels and hood would help me get there. |
Back in the early 70's my car had a hood vary much like the one in the OP's first picture. It was molded onto a flat bolt on factory hood. Looked great. I covered the under side with polished stainless steel..when you rased the hood it would blind you..lol

Nice, any pics?

Here are some detail pictures of my Moroso hood. Hopefully they help someone out.

Thanks for pics, very helpful.
|
Dave those pics are great.
I had a good talk with the guy at Glasstek who does the custom work. He'd like to see some pics from the side. So far I've found that Speedway sells these style scoops but if anyone has another source they like better please let me know. I also would like to know how tall the scoops are on the original Moroso hoods, 4. 5, or 6". I'll order a scoop and send it to Glasstek pending some side pics. Our only concern is the curve/transition in the front. |
Also the Moroso hood appears to be a combiation of a 2" cowl hood and a scoop.

Greg W on FB has the look that I like, he told me it's a Moroso hood:
|
So my only concern about getting one made is getting the front transition right.

I'd be curious as to the width of the base of the hoods y'all have, is it 10 or 13 inches wide? Length 31 inches?

Update for anyone interested. I asked around and found a used scoop off a drag car, should have it next week. I'll attach a pic of the scoop and a car that's example of what I'd go for. From looking at pics from the past, some cars had a scoop on a flat hood and then you have these Moroso pin-on hoods that have a scoop on a cowl. Well I'll explore both scenarios with Glasstek (flat and cowl hood) and we'll see what might work.
|
Scoop I sourced might not work out, guy was quoted insane shipping. I'll check with him one more time and if he's a bust I'll move and find another.
|
Where is the scoop at? Maybe a member here could help and pick it up.
|
Was like the MN / Canada border, I am confident I can find another.
Hey if you are at the shop would love a side shot of that gennie Moroso hood! |
Dan thanks for the pics.
It was very useful to know the scoop, from rise to rise not including the lip is around 38-39 long. That narrows my search. Since I would mount this to a flat hood, I think I should look for a 5-6" tall scoop. Back to the hunt. |
