L71/l89
 

The 67s in the Holy Grail collection are all L71. L89s had the same HP rating as L71, at 435, on account the heads did not contribute any more HP, only a weight savings, plus the option was expensive, and when offered one or two L89s back in the day I passed. Did have 67 & 69 L88s but didn't like them much and subsequently didn't keep them long. Never claimed to be smart.

----I think I misunderstood Ban617's question. I thought he was saying one of your black 67's was an L89 when all he was asking was weather a 67 L89 had a different HP rating than a regular 435. I heard of a super low mileage black L89 coupe (under 2000 miles) back in the late 70's. I never could get close to it but I trusted the fella that told me about it completely. He has unfortunatly passed on, but to this day I don't think the car has ever appeared. Would have been cool if one of yours was that car!.....Bill S

Wild bunch of vettes, one can only imagine having a L72 to drive each day of the week & shuffle a L71 with a fuely .Impressive collection. Love that bad boy( holy grail 2) raw pic back in the day, the GM of canada paper work cherry on top.

The 65 fuelie is the Collection owner's favorite.

----As far as I know this beauty should have a close ratio 4-speed. In 65 paperwork did not differentiate between close and wide ratio. The engine options you chose determined which trans you got within a certain ratio. What I don't know is weather a customer could over ride the system and get a specific trans to fit his or her use. For instance an ordered 375 hp with a desired 3:70 rear would automaticly get a close ratio 4-speed. If the owner wanted a 3:08 or 3:36 that car would get a wide ratio trans. Hope this makes sense.....Bill S

----There are examples thruout 1965 of very rare instances of ordered cars with M-22's. I have a good friend that has a 1965 396 Corvette with it's original stampted M-22 still intact. Engine gone, but stamping on the trans as well as early anomalies (rough castings and such) are right there. Don't know the date at this time but it is real! There are other examples tha some of the guys may expand upon!....Bill S

A friend ordered a '65 BelAir L78/M22 in Feb, received it in June.

A buddy whose race shop was 2 doors from mine ordered and took delivery of the first Corvette to have an assembly line M22, 194375S118966 was a blk/blk L78 tanker, "rush order-competition car" March 22/65, as Dave planned to run it in sports car races, which he did quite successfully. He traded in a blk/blk 1963 SWC fuelie that he had raced. I had all of the original sales docs and passed them on to the current collector owner, it having long been in good hands.

Bill do you know if your friends 65 m22 has a 1 inch or the early 7 / 8 cluster shaft. Thats a healthy bel air 67since67 . Midyr holy grail 6, the L72 with 3.36 rear ratio must a lot of fun on the roads (rare ratio for a 425 Hp) .Thanks gents.

Took this pre-delivery sheet pic from holy grail 6 and noticed differences between a canadian 69-70 pre delivery sheet i found in my protecto plate folder of my car not filled out. You must be familiar with these sheets.

Sometimes it seemed back then The General was more interested in producing paper than vehicles. There was always a blizzard of the stuff. Get a form one week and a couple of weeks later it was superseded by another, and another, and another. Salesman order books always had blank lines to write in changes and cost increases, cause they just kept coming.
The vast majority of it just got tossed, and even if put in a file dealers routinely sent it all to a landfill every five years or so, needing the room for more paper to come. Attached are Zone announcements for the L35 and Z28 availability in January 1967. The point now would be to recognize how rare the old docs are today, especially when directly relating to a specific car.
