1969 Camaro Street Machine Time Capsule Circa 1982 Car Craft Nationals & Book Car

Hi guys,

Car is now listed on eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203892086853

Brief history...the last owner purchased the car in 1978 while he was in high school in norther Illinois. Between 1978 and 1982, the car was transformed into the street machine you see in the photos. The incredible part is that the car remains untouched since 1982. The same tires are on it, the gauges still sit on the cowl behind the same L88 hood, and the Thrush mufflers sit just like they did in '82.

The car participated in the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals in '82 and was featured in Andrew Morland's 1984 book, Street Machines. The owner had the car from 1978-2021. Also included in the photos below are some time slips, and Homecoming parade photos from 1980.

Here are a few mechanical details:

4 Barrel Holley 650 Carb. Holley high rise aluminum manifold
M-21 4 Speed Manual transmission with 2.52 first gear
Hurst shifter with Reverse Lock out and front brake line lock
10 Bolt 4.11 Posi
Power Steering
Fiberglass L-88 Hood and complete fiberglass front end
All sheet metal had been replaced (door skins, quarter panels, back panel)
Traction Bars. Sub frame connectors
Battery mounted in the trunk
Electric fuel pump

The car runs and drives, but fluids should be changed, etc, if someone would like to drive the car more regularly.

If anyone has interest, please message me and we can connect. The Camaro is located in Mazomanie, WI 53560, about 30 minutes northwest of Madison. $36,900

Wow, what a time machine! Those rear tires are a real throwback.

As an aside, I won a Doug Nash 5 speed trans as a participant at the 1982 Car Craft Street Machine Nationals in Springfield IL :3gears:

Very cool car!

Tidmack 12-09-2021 12:18 PM

Thank you, Rich! I agree, the Keystones look "right" on this car.

Thank you, John! I didn't realize US30 closed THAT long ago. I appreciate you checking out the car.

No way, Bill! Back in '82, that 5 speed was a BIG deal. Heck, it's still a terrific gift 40 years later!

Regarding the tires...this is what I love about the car. It hasn't been touched in 40 years. The authenticity is spectacular. Thanks for checking out the listing, I appreciate it.

What a cool car and the fact that a feature car from that era was preserved and not "upgraded" over time makes it even more special.

Now add those drag strip photos with timeslips and it doesn't get much cooler.

Thanks for sharing with us!

carnut4life 12-09-2021 06:50 PM

What a neat time capsule with the coolest hood ever IMO. That small block looks so tiny without the inner fenders. GLWS Tim.

chevyandpontiac 12-09-2021 07:13 PM

This car was from the Oak lawn area.

Tidmack 12-09-2021 08:14 PM

Thank you, Marc. It's like a time machine, hey?

Oops it closed in 1984, Oswego closed in 1979.

Love this car, I bet there are a lot other pics out there.

flyingn 12-09-2021 09:21 PM

I remember that Camaro... Very cool

BJCHEV396 12-10-2021 03:26 AM

Way cool! GLWS!!

SupremeDeluxe 12-10-2021 12:22 PM

Very cool. I recall seeing this car in magazines as a kid in the 1980s. I also remember looking at other modded 1969 Camaros at the time in the weekly Auto Trader & Tradin' Times and saving up my money to get one ($3-4,000 seemed like the end of the universe in high school, let alone to spend it on a 20 year old Camaro). Had to settle for my neighbor's wife's 1980 LeSabre instead. I learned never to settle after that.

jerry455 12-10-2021 05:12 PM

WOW!
What a Time-Capsule. Hard to believe it's untouched after all these years!
I have that Car Craft Mag at home too.
108 MPH is a lot of speed for a 13.29 ET- means car has a lot more potential in it if traction improved. This is a fantastic opportunity here.
**Also- I see the '84 Hurst Olds hiding under plastic wrap- THAT was the car I sold my '70 Stage One Buick for when graduating college, thinking a needed a "grown-up" car when joining the Corporate world. LOL.

Great story, and incredibly true lesson I think several of us have learned. I'm hoping this car ends up with a caretaker who wanted a '69 Camaro street machine in their younger days. For whatever reason, it didn't work out then, but now it can...

I think you're SPOT ON, Jerry. I didn't say anything about the slips, as I didn't want folks to think I was trying to hype up the car. However, I completely agree, and think this is a 12 second car all day...not too shabby back in 1980 or so.

Thanks for noticing the Hurst! Just over 4,800 miles on that one. :)

I would love it, but just got a 63 Corvette fuel coupe and a 64 Porsche 356C in the last 45 days (Corvette was intentional, Porsche was a surprise too good to pass up). Pretty sure the wife would kill me if anything else comes home in in the near future.

I'd say so. I'm sure this one would hit 88 MPH much quicker though.

Tidmack 12-15-2021 01:33 PM

I sure hope so! Those Deloreans weren't the fastest cars out there, lol.

Wasn't it Scott Sullivan?

big gear head 01-17-2022 01:25 AM

Wow, my memory is so bad when it comes to names. It was Danny Ramsey. Danny Sullivan was a Indy driver. I knew Danny Ramsey many years ago and I think that's his Nova on the cover of that book.

Tidmack 01-17-2022 12:52 PM

This is my favorite part about being on this forum; as a collective group, the knowledge is unbelievable. Thank you for sharing about Danny's Nova, that is so cool!

Bump, with a price reduction to where I need to be on this Camaro at $36,900. Thank you sYc.

Jeff

I've had incredible response on this car, but it hasn't sold yet, so I gather the price isn't right. Reduced to $36,900. Updated eBay link with more photos and videos than most will want:

I saw it getting loaded on a trailer today on Facebook. Congratulations on the sale. A very cool car!

Tidmack 05-02-2022 12:55 PM

Thank you, and thank you for supporting my page, too! The buyer is a car guy through and through, and I'm thrilled it's going to a good home.
