Scary news but glad to hear Jay's Ok too! Fires usually happen when least expected = why extinguishers ready at hand ALWAYS necessary. :scholar: ~ Pete . |
Glad to read he's OK.
First the Hemi under glass rollover, now this. |
Yes, glad he is going to be OK, sounds like his face took some damage.
Anyone see anything about the car or garage ? I can't find any news on that outcome. |

The original poster statements were incorrect and were based on early misinformation by the media. The fire was gasoline related. This created a few members to perpetuate more misinformation, and ultimately political rhetoric.
I updated this post and deleted a few inappropriate posts by another member. Steve Shauger |

From Facebook.....
We are all praying for Jay Leno to have a full and speedy recovery from his accident last Sunday. It is reported that Jay was working on his 1909 White Steam car when he was hurt by fire in an accident. Although the car is green in my 10 year old photos, I believe it has been recently restored in Red. In 2012 I was fortunate to spend the day with Jay Leno along with my writing partner Richard Truesdell when we took a ride around Burbank in this very car. I took pictures of Jay initiating the steam process by lighting the pilot light for the gas ignition. You can see Jay is lighting the flame through the tire in the third photo. At that time, he explained that he was lighting Gasoline and it was one of the dangerous procedures associated with early Steam engine vehicles. |
So - basically like playing around with a home or RV water heater, or furnace.

Not to minimize what happened to Jay, but in an attempt to add some levity to an otherwise serious news item:
I do catch myself on fire with some regularity. Typically it is as I am trying to get my propane heater going in the back garage, if it conks out as I try to get it to relight it will "phoof" a little fireball. I typically don't notice until I come back in the house and the ladies look at me funny, then I realize my eyebrows or the hair of my beard will be singed on one side of my face. I came in one time and they had drawn a clock on the chalkboard that said "Days since Dad Has Caught Himself on Fire", set to "zero". K |

Got my engine builder one time, too.
We were in Atlanta and tuning up a new engine and combination. He was leaning over the carb and motioned for me to crank it and when I did it backfired up from the carb. Singed his hair and eyebrow pretty good. He was really excited to show me his new helmet at the next event: |
So - back to being serious - I think we all know that these cars can be tricky, especially when dealing with fuel but also in the garage environment itself.
You know the drill; Let's all be careful out there. K |

I'm sorry - I know it shouldn't always be about the cars, but - I am reminded that President Taft motorized his presidential fleet and that one of the cars he had was a 1909 White Steamer:

I stand corrected. Apologies...
With the vapor LEL of modern fuels It is an NFPA violation to even store gasolines anyplace in a room that has an active pilot light - and it is the vapor that burns not the actual gasoline. But why in the world use gasoline in a steamer when Kerosene would get the job done and was the preferred fuel for these cars anyway? |

Im glad he going to be ok, we are fortunate to see him at alot of local
get togethers around town.Every year at the Holiday Motor Excursion he shows up with his latest toy. When I got the STuTZ running a few years ago after sitting since 1951, he was all over it. Its not uncommon to see him driving 2 or 3 of this cars in one day around his shop! |

As an aside here is the Manual for the 1907 White.
http://www.whitesteamcar.com/wp-cont...structions.pdf Instructive is the particular caution for the precise adjustment of "Gasoline" in 1907. So after filtering the "gasoline" through a "chamois skin" as required the operator had to read the specific Baume scale and make a determination as to the grade of the fuel present, for certain grades valve moderation was required to control the burner flame size. Through the specific adjustments called out in the manual, Gasoline during this early period was very likely much closer to a modern refined kerosene grade in formulation terms than anything like a modern gasoline. |
Good grief….I have a hard time figuring out what button to push at the pump when it says “select grade”!:confused2::hmmm::hmmm::biggthumpup::eek2:
Hopefully he recovers quickly. Burns anywhere aren’t pleasant let alone on the face. What a down to earth great guy he is. No matter how famous, he has time for the regular guy. That’s genuine. Cheers:beers: Dave |
