Headers by Doug
I was wondering if anyone recalls the headers by Doug back in the early 70s.
If so maybe chime in and let me know the colors of the headers from that time Were they painted factory or were most painted by the user? Also guys doing white on your day two headers what are you using that holds up. |

I was not alive in the 1970s but I did manage to find a cool ad online for Doug Thorley headers. You can see they're black here. I have Appliance headers on my Camaro and had them done in white. They're ceramic coated... It's holding up ok but not perfect. I probably have about 500 miles on them. Cylinder number three primary showed some white flaking off after about 200 miles. Sort of disappointing considering it's not running lean but what can you do? I'm not planning on taking them back out
I know Doug's and Doug Thorley's are two different makes, I believe Doug's stayed with Mr. Thorley and his ex-wife went on to make Doug Thorley headers. I think the story went something like :dunno: |
Headers by Doug was in Anaheim Ca. I remember the shop clearly (and the sign)...it was also a muffler shop, too.
Later the company moved to Riverside then was sold to the folks who own Pertronix, I think? |
Had Dougs Hedders on my small block drag car 67 Caprice in 73. They were orange.

These are really early Camaro small block Doug’s Headers. Flange is pretty close or identical to the Bill Thomas design.

Thanks everyone!

----Looking at all these great Doug's Headers adds give a little insight into why Doug and his wife may have divorced! I knew Doug a little and makes some sense.....Bill S

I had a few conversations with Doug when I worked for Car Craft...interesting guy for sure. He was proud of "Doug's" headers and justifiably so. |

If they don't fit that, I'm thinking C2/C3 Corvette is most likely. Quote:

I got a chance to try a test-fit on my '68 SS396, and they definitely do NOT fit a Chevelle.
#4 pipe interferes with the crossmember, so they can't go forward enough to line up with the heads. It's about an inch off, so not within hammering in some tolerance. |

I think Doug Thorley (Doug's) headers from the late '60s and very early '70s were kind of a salmon orange color as seen in these vintage NOS hemi and AMC headers. It's not the same kind of orange like Chevy orange block paint.

A little off topic, but I have always been unclear if all three of these entities are the same "Doug"
Headers by Doug Doug's Headers Doug Thorley Headers Anyone know for certain? |

IIRC, she ended up with the Doug's Headers after the divorce while Doug started the new "Headers by Doug". The latter was the better quality, the former turned to junk.

Doug’s company became “Doug’s Headers”, while the wife’s company remained “Doug Thorley.”
