Bullitt Chase Scene Details By Those Who Were There!

This is a great article detailing how it was done, by those intimately involved. Love the firsthand accounts and the critical details in the making of this iconic car chase real. All done at actual speed, so you felt you were there and driving.....

Great articles, thanks for sharing

Wow. Great read. One of my all time favorites. Thanks for sharing Steve.

great read, it was great to see the charger ran rings around the mustang when the cameras were off. I think if you have not actually experienced those SF streets in person, you may not get how crazy they are. I had the pleasure living there for a while and it is truely shocking.
I always wondered how many noticed that the hubcaps on the charger re-attached themselves. Could never figure out the code on the build sheet for that. |

[QUOTE=Lee Stewart;1618186]They had to - The Charger lost 8 hub caps in the movie.
There is no code for the hub caps: Lee, I was trying to be funny, was making fun of where is that special feature I could have ordered to have my hubcaps go back on after rolling down the hill. ;) |

The behind the scene shots of all the rigging is pretty cool. The stuff they bolted to those cars is just crazy. The camera man in the trunk of the Charger must have been holding on for dear life.
|
These effects were done the hard way, which makes it amazing that they pulled it off. Todays computerized special effects are amazing, but many times they go too far and are not believable.
|
The charger had more apparatus stuck to it than most have in their garages.
|
And if you notice, the shot of them hitting the gas pumps was a 'retake'.
If you watch the original movie, there is a stutter where they had to insert the good take. They missed the pumps on the first go around.. Old news if you have followed it |

I have a 68 Charger Replica. 3 1/2 years ago a magazine did an article about the movie and chase and I used my car for the filming. Here is the post to SYC. https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthread.php?t=151328 |
Very interesting story. Honestly, I've never seen the whole show, just the chase scenes...

Saw this magnificent Bullit Charger tribute in Daly City (south side of SF) back in 2012. Made my day.

Both of the Bullitt Mustangs are known right, one was the car that the family had and then sold a few years for big bucks. I don't know much about the other one.
