Well?.... We're Waiting! Bill

Are they showing up now ?
I changed the setting to public in my photo album. |
Interesting tag with 4P, which would, normally, indicate an L48...:confused2:

4P, fourth week of March 03D. Hmmm 🤔
Is the MQ engine still in the car? |
...
... The original MQ motor is not in the car . I do have a 1969 396/375 motor that was supplied by the sponsor at that time ... Watts Chevrolet Williamsburg, Virginia :3gears: ... |

Few more photos from FB. If early L78 were coded 4P on the trim tags, when was the change over to 4K? Just trying to educate myself.
Thanks, Marty |
Marty, we recently been discussing a 4P L78 car I know about but don’t have knowledge of its TT to get the build date. Its last six vin numbers are 208??? And yours is 198??? Built 03D.
Your info helps us time line build dates for other 4P cars. I’m thinking the car I’m referring to is a 04B car. Most people think that the last 4P L78’s were in April. Nice car, love the color. Are you going to get her back in the road? Later |
Not my Camaro
Thanks for the information. The Camaro in the post is not mine. I have been helping post some photos since they initially were not showing properly. It’s a very cool car and just want to be educated on the 4P L78’s.
Thanks, Marty |
I love the color, and the Cragars. This is one of those cars that I would not restore to factory condition.

Was the car repainted? Only ask because of the lack of black painted tail panel.
|
Notice on the TT the 3K which is ext mouldg. The drip rail SSteel trim is present and the double pin stripe down the side but the wheel well mouldings are not present. Could just be they were removed per owner preference.
Got any engine compartment pics? Curious about the brakes, fan shroud and radiator and small stuff. |
Correct steering wheel horn button for an L78. I think it’s been repainted. Cool car!
|
They did a nice job on the front stripe if it has been repainted. Very cool car but I prefer the earlier wheels and lettering.
|
... I recently purchased this SS 396/375 Camero.
... It is a 4P car. ... It has not been repainted. ... It has always been a drag car. ... 1122 actual miles. ... It going to clean up very nicely and I plan on leaving it as it has always been. ...:3gears::3gears: ... |
John, I sent you a pm. Congrats and glad you are keeping it as is. Earliest known L78 to be sold to public to date if I'm not mistaken..
|
owner must have sprayed the tail panel blue. the tail panels were all painted black when the 396-325 came out in january. i’m sure there’s the black under the blue paint.
|
Pop the trunk and snag some photos and you will be able to tell for certain.
|
With the 4P on the trim tag, wouldn't this appear to Fisher to be an SS350 and therefore get the body color rear panel as opposed to the 396/325 getting the 4N which would indicate black rear body panel? Then, when the 4K came out they knew to paint the rear panel black? Just thinking out loud which I know is dangerous.

... I will get some photos of that to share with all of you. ... I had heard that the 4P was a Body by Fisher code that said that the back panel was to be painted the same color as the rest of the car ... like the Original 1967 PaceCar which was also a 375 car with 4P ... correct me if I am wrong. :burnout: |
Very Kool find, congratulations !

My old 4P L78 had been repainted by the time I got it, but there were remnants of the original black tail panel showing in the trunk. I think I still have a pic of that on my old computer. I'll take a look if I have time.
|
Hmmm 🤔 Jeff H, that makes sense about Fisher thinking it’s a 350 car. Hopefully we can get some pics inside the trunk to check this out.
Good thinking 99. |
Very interested in hearing if the rear panel is original paint.
I would not be surprised if it slipped through with body color paint since it is such an early L78. |

Although not a Camaro, but worth saying, Jerry Frailey's original paint 1969 L78 Chevelle arrived without the tail panel painted from the factory. He was disappointed because his buddies Chevelle was……and he liked the look. So he grabbed one of his mom’s lace cloths and painted the black on the tail panel himself, with the lace pattern. It currently is covered with vinyl (I really don’t know why). Unfortunately, it can’t be seen in these pictures but if you saw the car in person, you can see the lace pattern underneath the vinyl.
My point being, could the tail panel on this Camaro been missed for paint……? Just food for thought. Kurt |

No sign of black paint as I can see. I think this is the first 4P L78 we’ve had a chance to look at here on the site in detail. I’m enjoying it.
Thanks |

Original paint and never had blackout done. IMHO.
|
Would you care to post or email me engine compartment photos please.

I think I speak for many…..that we’re elated that you are keeping this special car in its current state……and not made in to a cookie cutter like other former race cars. So thank goodness this time capsule has the right caretaker!!! Kurt :beers: on a side note, there’s nothing wrong with concourse restored cars, but this one deserves to stay the way it is…. |
