Patina...
is the whole 'patina' thing getting played out a little? I'm not talking about unrestored cars like those displayed at MCACN, but cars that are fully built but sporting a hagard body or paint. Like this;

Actually that is a pretty nice car, the "Patina" thing that makes me cringe is when they airbrush rust spots...UGH.

Lots of great engineering on this build, and money spent. It'd take a 50k paint job to due it justice, so I do get it. This one you could wring out on a power tour and have a blast.

I kind of like the patina thing. Lynn Park is a Cobra collector that built "Son of Dirtbag" a 289 Kirkham Cobra built with old parts he took off of real Cobras. I think it's cool.

I was talking to a friend yesterday who does a lot of the final detail for RS's cars. He was commenting how the skyrocketing cost of paint and body, and the constant maintenance and repair a perfect paint job needs on a car that is built to be driven extensively, is driving this trend. Built cars maintaining patina are more interesting than ever to customers.

The patina you get when you maintain originality, is highly attractive to me. Fully restored cars (even over restored ones) are highly attractive to me. Restored or restomods with applied patina, are very unattractive to me.
That's just me, your results may vary. |

People always enjoy checking out my friend Andrew's Cougar. I think the story is his father in law shaved the door handles and painted the car in the 70s.

My turbo car 69 bird w 468 Pontiac T88 off one of racin Jason’s cars,(big big fan of Jason’s RIP) made 960 Hp and 1150 ft lbs and it hooks on BFG 325 Drag radials. Never had it on a nitto. I don’t leave off the T brake only F brake runs 9.70 at 146. It’s a simple ladder bar w diagonal link that I never mess with thing hooks in gravel. It’s got PLENTY of patina after 160 -180 track passes a year for the first 5 years and then around 100 for the next 5 and a bunch of street driving. I hate the pantina on both my cars. Both were race cars and though I tried to keep them nice stuff happens. I can’t paint anymore and I don’t trust anyone else to paint it. So it is what it is for now . I may vinyl wrap the one that’s not rare this year I can still do that wrapped a few airplanes including my own every one loves them in many ways better than paint in many ways not. ��

Nitto pays $1000 bounty to win in my NMCA True Street class, so I was desperate to make them work. I gave up and went back to my Hoosiers, which WILL hook even when worn down to the cords. I think the True Street guys that run these ease into the throttle and nail it when they quit smoking. I can't do that; in order to hit the number I have to dead hook right from the start. I was reviewing the data after the Indy event and thought it was telling. The "fast" guys are running Mickeys or Hoosiers and you don't see the Nitto usage come in until high 11's/low 12's. K |

Keith I been 1.59 on NT50R 18's. I'm pretty sure I could go an easy mid 1.5 on the bigger 325 50 15 Nitto DRs with my '67.

I should clarify I was saying 1.40's.
I'm at 1.40-1.42 usually, and there was nothing there with the Nitto 275/60's. K |

Honestly. apart from the sort of "patina" that comes with cars that were clearly well cared for their whole lives, I've always disliked this trend. I'd rather have the worlds crappiest rattle can job over a car with half the paint flaked and baked off.

1 - Hair in paint, RH rear quarter panel 2 - Swiped area in decklid 3 - Lacquer checking in hood 4 - Handprint in hood 5 - spot on RH front fender where the paint won't stick K |

My 1966 Cameo Ivory patina.
The first time a saw this car was in 1980 sitting on a used car lot in San Jose, Ca. and the factory paint was still beautiful. It wasn’t a good time for me financially so I passed. Next time I found it on July 24, 1991 it was sitting outside uncovered for several years which took its toll on the paint. This time the purchase was made. When I used to take it to classic car events occasionally someone would walk up and say you should paint this car. I was polite but short with them as they obviously don’t understand a Survivor car. As years go by I appreciate the patina this car offers every time I uncover it. Someday when I’m gone the next owner can have it sprayed if they wish. |

I learned from a Camaro friend, the greatest way to make white paint white again was with the careful use of oven cleaner. Of course, you can't leave it on for minutes as the directions would state. However, I tried it on some white on one of my cars and the results were unbelievable! The Brillance of the white in that one spot of use was crazy. Only left it on for a few seconds. Then wiped it off with a damp cloth. I am sure every brand is different in its power and results. I am staying with the recommended brand. I can't wait to do some more someday. Was it scary using it on a car valued at between 130 and 150K ? Yes, of course. But those results were remarkable.
Disclaimer: don't ever use oven cleaner of any kind on a cars paint. Danny |

Oven cleaner is an acidic substance that removes baked-on grease and grime from ovens. The active ingredient in most oven cleaners is sodium hydroxide, with a pH of 13. This means it is highly alkaline and can cause burns if it comes into contact with the skin.
