'84 500 SEL 5.0 AMG "Blueberry"
|
jeez, that's a lot of hype for this car. Which frankly just does not excite me. Sorry Mercedes.

----Richard was my boss for most of the years I lived in Hinsdale Il. Some of the best years of my life. He was a great boss, and a good friend!....Bill S

Interesting story about it's creation, life and restoration back to original.

Very cool story!!
|
I enjoyed reading about that car, great article.
|
I worked there the summer of 1985 and washed this car a few times.........great to know it is still around and looks great. I always loved Lapis Blue and didn't realize it was so unique. Like Bill - great memories for me as a 15 year old kid in a shop like that. I am fortunate to still be friends with some of the people I worked with there all those years ago.

Anytime I see a super rare car that went through Classic Motors, it reminds me of how incredibly lucky we were to be around all this bad assery.( Grand Sport 001, LS6 Chevelle Converts, AMG, Ultra low mile muscle cars and Corvettes, etc. That shop had a tremendous impact on us as kids growing up. |

Missed the AMG era, but lived above Morton's for a while around that time and would see one or another in the garage from time to time and wondered if possibly Richard's, but likely those of your customers, if not. Can imagine it must have been a blast! |
Neat car, those AMG sedans were a big deal for sure.
I think that location still has a dealer, I'm thinking Continental Motors? I used to hang out with a buddy who lived a few streets over. |

It's Continental AutoSports Ferrari today,I drive by it weekly and even stopped in a few years ago to look into some old Jack Douglass history.

In the 80's they were a little farther west on the same (south) side of Ogden Ave. in Westmont - just west of Cass Ave. I just looked at a Google Earth view and it looks like the building is no longer there (unless it is the Georgia Carpets building??). The summer I worked there I was 15 and too young for a driver's license, so many times I rode my bike up and down Cass Ave. to get back and forth to work from our house in Darien.
Tenney - that Hemmings ad was just after Dad bought his 67 Red L79/A-C roadster from Richard (and how we were introduced to Bill and Stretch around 1976). I think Dad was also looking at the Maroon 67 coupe listed in that ad if I recall correctly - but Bill talked him into the roadster. Bill please correct me if I am mistaken...... Great memories for sure. Hard to believe that it was 40 years ago when I worked there and almost 50 when Dad bought the 67. |
----I'm going to have to dig deep and find how many of those rides were once mine, some times more than once. Stretch also ended up both owning and just using some of the inventory as regular transportation as did I (the 1968 Impala SS convert was one of his favorites). Hope this isn't overload on my part.
Jake,,, I believe your Dad already owned his 67 when I started at Classic, but could be wrong. Too many years ago!!! |
Not many L79/AC's runnin' around town even then, Jake!
When Continental moved-in (mid-late '80's?) - it was pretty much the same place - their service area was where your Camaro was parked, Bill. They've since Zamboni'd the joint a bit, as happens - yet a buddy working there at that time, still is! |
----One funny deal was Stretch's 65 396 blue roadster. He wanted to buy something else so I bought his 396. Kept it at Classic for the winter and then sold it back to him. Don't know if I even sat in it!....LOL.
---- The 66 full comp Cobra was actually a 65, and my cousin, Dave, was the 2nd owner. It had great racing history, but Dave never raced it. He offered it to me in late 69, but I couldn't come up with the needed cash ($5,500 I believe). Many years later the day I started work at Classic Richard asked me if I had a cousin named Dave that owned a Cobra. I said yes, and he told me he had just bought it. Hard to top that story!....Bill S |
Interesting follow up on this story coming that is more related to the group of folks involved back in the day............I'll start a new thread with more information in the coming weeks as more information is available.
