Re: color code for drive shaft

Three stripes are on the driveshaft, approx 12 inches back from the front yoke. Yellow - Green - Yellow, the colors are approx 1/2 inch wide, 3/4 inch apart. I have not seen any other colors on the drive shaft.

JD, still working on finding my file with part numbers, labels, vendors, etc... Then I will fax it or email it to you. I've had Jerry's Deuce in my registry for the last 5 years or so, but never got his trim tag/drivetrain info. Can you get that for me?

JD, I had inspection marks on my 70 396/350 Nova driveshaft and rear end yoke. Mine is a 4 speed car. My driveshaft marks were also a different color.

Re: color code for drive shaft

Hey Pete;
The John Deere colors would actually be ok! The pic I have was actually an accident. I just held the camera on the floor to get an under car shot of the brake cables and exhaust (14k mile deuce) and when I got the pictures developed I saw the driveshaft stripes.

I tried to get another picture of an a/t deuces' shaft stripes a few years later, but the owner wasn't real happy that I had already dug a hole in his stone floor garage to get the codes off the trans - I didn't want to push it, his dog had already bitten me in the wrist when I stepped out of my car

Re: color code for drive shaft

x44d80.... When I cleaned up the drive shaft on my COPO Camaro it had red, green, blue. I'm assuming it was the original driveshaft, so when we restored the car, we put the stripes back on. Can any confirm these are the right colours??? Oh ya.... turbo 400 car.

Re: color code for drive shaft

JD,

Looks like there were four different production drive shafts available in 70. They are for the following applications:

1. Nova w/T.H. 400 <font color="red">(i.e. 350, 396 with T.H. 400) </font color>
2. Nova (exc. T.H. 400) <font color="red">(i.e. 250 &amp; 307 with manual trans; 250, 307, &amp; 350 with PG; 250, 307, &amp; 350 2/BC with T.H. 350) </font color>
3. Nova w/4-Spd. (350,396)
4. Nova 2-Dr. (T.H. 350) w/4BC (350)

1. ???
2. ??? I think this one is Orange - Red - Green
3. Yellow - Green - Yellow
4. ???

Can anyone fill in the others?

There is a cast part number on the shaft end near the transmission. It does not correlate with the parts book numbers. Let me know the part number If you find it.

Lastly has anyone used the Driveshaft Restoration Service by Quanta ? Elsewhere they mention part nunbers stenciled on driveshafts. Was that done on the Camaro and Nova? Thanks, Greg

Here is one from a 04C 69 COPO Camaro 4 speed I restored last year. I never did figure out if there were 2 or 3 colors here. Orange and Purple I can make out, I am not sure if there was another color in between. Check out the picture and see what you think.
Marks were 17" aft of the front joint.

I know a guy who has an original 350hp 396 th400. Maybe he will let me take a look at it. Most of what I have are 6 banger stripes and a 307 pg. I just found them on the shafts this weekend. Although, my 69 Nova pg car had Green, Brown and Orange.

Re: color code for drive shaft

My car is an 05D if I remember correctly. Yes, I can honestly say that it is brown in between. It's not rust, because there is bare steel underneath. I looked at the inspection mark kits in the repro. cats. and there is nothing listed for brown. My eyes don't lie. I will try to get some pics of it.

Re: color code for drive shaft

Did you sand it or did you use a non solvent based cleaner? I used a wax and grease remover and they popped right up. Most of the marks I have found to be within the first two feet of the trans yoke. Except on my 71 pg 307.

Re: color code for drive shaft

I am glad I posted the picture now. There does seem to be a brown stripe there, guess I did not consider that on first inspection.
On this car everything on the undercarriage had been "chassis blacked". The only way I even suspected that there were stripes there is because there was a smooth spot that had not been effected by rust.
So, I got out the 600 and started wet sanding, The best I could do was what you see in the picture.

I used a degreaser solvent and some steel wool.. maybe I am missing something or just can't quite find them or they are too light now to see.. Who knows?? I would like to duplicate them if I know the right color coding..

[/ QUOTE ]OH NO! That might be why you havent found them. Someone could have sanded them off already. All the driveshafts that I have, have not been painted. You know what you are supposed to do before you apply fresh paint don't you? Yep, sand it. So, you might have try and duplicate it from another person's car. But keep trying. They might be there somewhere.

I am looking for photos, but can't seem to find them at the moment. I believe BB Benny's 69 Nova driveshaft had the correct stripes applied during the resto...perhaps he can post a photo, or it may be linked to his for sale ad.
