color restoration

how would a x44 camaro with a code of 55 50 PNT be painted. I know it is azure turquoise and dover white, but did that mean the vinyl top or paint? I know it had a vinyl top originally. The complete line of the tag is:

TR 727 55 50 PNT

Thanks!

Re: color restoration

727= Standard Ivory/Black bucket seats
55-50= Lower color is Azure Turquoise and the top color is Dover White (both are painted on no vinyl top

I believe thats 2 tone paint, white painted roof, Azure body. Whoops, Jeff beat me to it anyhow!

Re: color restoration

It didn't have a vinyl top originally, the 2 tone combos used the same trim as a vinyl top to separate the top color from the body color.

Re: color restoration

Wasn't this fairly a rarely ordered option? I've yet to see a car with 2-tone paint.

Thats what I was going say. Can someone post a picture of the car. I have never seen a two-tone first gen. Camaro before.

Here's a late production (11A) 63-50 coded car. It's actually about 200 cars from the end of production Though it looks like a vinyl top, it's not.

Re: color restoration

I don't think GM kept color or vinyl top records but I think the vinyl top was a popular thing in the 60's. I remember looking for my 1st Camaro in the late 70's and being turned off by so many vinyl topped cars, but wound up buying one anyway. The 2-toned thing must have been GM's idea to give the customer a whole lot of options on customizing their new car.

Re: color restoration

Nothing on the colors were kept, but since the Vinyl Top was an RPO (RPO C08)GM does have the records for how many Camaros came with a vinyl top:

67 - 52455
68 - 77065
69 - 100602

Lot of cars had Vinyl tops, approaching 40% of all Camaros in 69. Lot more than have them now.

Re: color restoration

Do you think this two-tone color option was very rare? Or a high volume item like the vinyl tops?

Don't know about the rarity of the two tone schemes, but there does appear to be more of them later in production, than earlier.

Heres another one. This it a 53-51 car.

Re: color restoration - two tone

2 tone is pretty rare. About 1% of 69 Camaros got it.
It was available on 68 and 69 F-birds too.
The trim was not the same as vinyl top, different part #'s. Probably not blacked out in the groove of the trim.

That brown car that Mark posted above is actually 61-63 paint. Pretty rare, not many ordered and who would keep it that color. The upper paint is Champagne, never actually seen it on a 69 other than this car.

All 6 two tones combos have been observed. The three white top combos are the most common. The rarer combos are the two blue on blue combos and the brown on champagne.

Kurt, Thank you for the information. It's a lot fun to learn more about the camaro I have.

The March 2003 Feature car is a great example of Azure Turquoise. as seen here

Does anyone know of more Azure Turquoise camaro photos?
