Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

Hi,
I just bought this 70 Eliminator on ebay. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

70 Eliminator on Ebay

The owner is supposed to send me over documentation proving that is an Eliminator (it does have the Q code, but that can just be a 428 eqip. Cougar I believe). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

So, you guys have any Cougar expertise that you would like to share? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

I have been to the classic couger network page (http://www.theclassiccougarnetwork.com/elim/) and read up on them somewhat and emailed their Guru.

I will be selling one of the projects (nope, not the 69 Camaro LM1 or the Formula 400)to make room for this one if anyone is interested. I will be selling a 69 Camaro X-11 (non ss)roller (over $500 in new front end rebuild, ball joints on, big block m-mounts, etc, 12 Bolt rear(large gears) (10 bolt in car)), and a 1967 Vette 427 Engine. This is a red/red car.

You can go to the site below for more specs on this car, I was going to list it on ebay while I restored the LM1, but have been working on some ever since (you may notice that at that time I had not done the ball joints yet). I did list it briefly on camaros.net.

Thanks for any information you may wish to share!

Nope, the car as my aviatr is *NOT* the car in this ad. Sorry for any confusion. That is the LM1 that I am restoring. Please visit the link in the ad for several pics of the car!

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

-----If that Corvette block is a 351 casting you may want to break that out of the Camaro package and put that on E-bay seperatly. Right now 67 427s are at an all time high if in good buildable condition. Take the money and package a less valuable big-block with your Camaro. Just a suggestion for what its worth!.......Bill S

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

Hi Bill, the numbers on the block are TO309IL, which I believe codes out right for a 67 Vette. The guy I bought it from had it in a 66 Impala running 13's. It came out of his vette when he put in a zz motor (I shoudl probably hang on to it, I am sure that he will be wanting to buy it back one day!). Thanks for the advice, I may just do that.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

You'll want to get the Marti report for the car. It will show whether it's an Eliminator or not (personally, I like the regular CJs better), whether it's a Ram Air car or not, and how many were produced with each option, among other things.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

Hi 442w30, Great News! Frank Bowers with the eliminator registry responded to an email by me today and verified the car.
Here is a part of the response:
(open quote)
"To put your mind at ease, yes, this is a real Eliminator. Several of us "cat fanciers" have known about this car for several years now, but I guess we were all working on other projects and failed to take advantage of a bargin." (close quote)
Additionally, it looks like the build sheet is there and legible. (Heck and Dana Man was not even involved) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif

442, why do you like the non-eliminator CJ's better? I guess it is sort of like the yenko/copo thing? The yenko's came with the stripes and I have seen some with optioned interiors, but usually see CoPo's stripped down? Or is there another reason? Either way, these cougars have to be the best bargain around, at least compared to other supercar's and Stangs. Heck, even the 428 Mach 1's are bringing 35k these days!

Another piece of interesting information I came across on the cougar sites. Apparently unlike Don Yenko and other chevy dealers, who were involved in the circuit, the special (67-68) "dan gurney" cougars were just advertising. In his words, he said that he just posed with the cars for promotional pics. It goes on to say that actually Carrol Shelby was involved with the Cougar 428CJ's more than Gurney ever was with the "Gurney Specials".

Thanks,

Rich

Like someone mentioned above get the Marti report! They are as accurate as can be and having your cars build sheet would just be gravy. I had a 69 Mach 1 Mustang a year ago and got what is known as a Lois Emiger report which is the actual invoice from your car that has been at Ford since 1969. If we could only get this stuff on our Chevys.......

Eliminator? Wow, you don't see those everyday! It has been years since I have seen one drive down a road. The last one was painted yellow if memory serves me right. Anyway, congrats! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

69LM1, I think the reason why I prefer the regular ones is because they tend to be ignored and I've seen less of them. In fact, I bet they made less CJs than Eliminator CJs. Blame the magazines for this, as chances are they'll feature an Eliminator before any other Cougar.

I am not sure if I've seen one in Competition Green before, though. All of them seem to be in Orange, Gold, or Blue.

Go to www.martiauto.com to see what the report is. You'll be glad you did.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

442w30,
Yes, I know what you mean. Actually, I briefly owned a 68 cougar 302 several years ago, and it was nice. Especially the taillight blinkers scheme.
The Yenko's, CoPo's, heck even the Mach's are into the stratosphere price wise now. There was another 428 Cougar on Ebay that ended last night at around 4K, but the reserve was not met. It had a buy it now at just under 12k. Again, what a deal compared to mach's, etc.

I definately plan on getting the Marti report, and Frank at the Cougar registry knows the car, so that was my biggest concern, that it was real. People are faking everything these days! Not that I have a problem with "clones" or tribute cars as some call them, just if someone spends that kind of cash, they expect an investment car. My cousin has a 69 "yenko" clone with a 454 out of a wrecked 70 Chevelle SS. He was asking about the vette 427 (which I just found out is out of a 66 not a 67 vette) to put in his car. My question to him was why? The 454 runs great, problem free. It is a clone anyway, and a driver, not a show car. I would probably leave the 454 in there if I was him. Oh well, enough rambling, back to work.

One question though, anyone know of a forum like this for the Cougars? Info seems scarce.

Not that I would leave here, 69 Camaros are my first love. In fact, like most of you, my wife is jealous https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif of my Hugger Orange 69!

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

If the date codes match up, I'd tend to believe the "no VIN stamping" on original motor comment. I had a '70 Mach 1 Q-code that I bought from the original owner that had no VIN on the block (dates were fine) and my friend's 69 Mach 1 R-code is the same way - super honest, unmolested car with no VIN stamp on the correct CJ block.

In general, I don't think all of the Ford plants consistently put VIN's on motors until the 70's.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

Hi Tom,
The guys at the eliminator registry agree. The owner sent over a bunch of paperwork, as well as the original build sheet and pics of the door sticker.
They actually know this car and some of them have said that everyone was waiting for the owner to sell. Looks like the guy that put it on ebay paid around 3400 for it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif.
It is also a question as to how many competition green eliminators have survived, this may be the only one!

It is funny, because there was another thread recently about that guy that has the yenko that is rotting away, but will not sell it. Guess you gotta be in the right place at the right time! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I am just waiting for that yenko to show up and someone to say what a great deal they got!

I cannot wait to get this car home and start on the resto.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

What's interesting about the 1970s is that all CJs were coded Q, while at Ford it was Q and R. I am not sure why this was.

When you get the Marti report, make sure you get the deluxe one (well, it's your money, do what you want! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif) You may have to specify that you want the numbers tabulated for Eliminators and not just standard Cougars. But it should state how many green cars were made as well as any other combo you specify.

Re: Just Bought This 70 Eliminator on Ebay

442w30,
Good Idea to tabulate with eliminators and not all cougars. What does the deluxe marti report give that the standard does not?

Man I wish that we had something like this for Camaros!

BTW- I just updated the pics on my Camaro LM1,the grill is now in it and I am on the interior!!!

WOW~!
Yea, I will be getting the deluxe report! Thanks for posting pics. I just sold that 69 Camaro X-11 car that I was working on to free up some cash for this project.
Another story, in fact I will post under a new thread.
Father son deal.
