$2 Million Hemicuda
Just got my Dec 04 issue of Mopar Action mag. It features a article on the last Hemicuda convertible built which recently changed hands for 2 million bucks.
Noted Mopar restoration Guru Roger Gibson made the deal happen. Who said Muscle Car prices are 'soft'? |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
The last US production hemicuda ragtop (May 71 built) was my old yellow one which I dont think has sold (Charley do you know?) I believe one of the two export cars (1 grey, 1 blue) may have a higher VIN. Any one have any additional gossip? Several people have turned down that amount but I havent heard of any actual sales. -NJSteve

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
I don't have the article but I assume they are talking about the White with black billboards one that Gibson restored.
|
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Wow! I just can't believe people are willing to pay that much money for those cars. I would think a 1 of 1 built car like the 68 Z28 convertible would bring the most money. What's so special about a hemi convertible? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif And yes, that is sarcasm on my part!
|
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Did it ship to foreign soil?
I hate it when they leave the country, and another piece of US History Vanishes. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |

The car had no soul...and it would never run better than a 14.05 at 105 mph. Though I wouldn't mind having it back just to sell it for $2,000,001. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Maybe because they look better than a Z28 convert and have alot bigger engine. The car is staying in the states thanks to the buyer. It was destined for England.
|
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
That would have been going to the Carlos Monteverde collection? He's got a lot of super rare hemi cars and frequently trades up for lower mileage cars, etc.

I don't have the article but I assume they are talking about the White with black billboards one that Gibson restored. [/ QUOTE ] Yep....thats the one Charley. Article states the current owner is Bill Weimann, same guy that paid $1 million for the blue car about a year ago. The white/black billboard car was a French-export. History on the car is a bit fuzzy, but it does state that Gibson completed the restoration last June. |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Was the blue one Milton Robson's old car?
|
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
About the $2 million dollar Hemi Cuda----it is white with black billboards. I am sure because the car was in my showroom for 2 weeks before it was picked up for delivery. Roger Gibson and I are very good friends and he brings many of these great cars to my shop for transportation to their owners.
It is a beautiful car but being a devout Yenko fan, it paled in comparison to the Yenko's across the showroom. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif floor. |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Hey Keith! Long time no type! You still gonna be tied up next weekend, or are we gonna get to see a couple of the beauties from your collection? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif Oh, and have you seen this year's Reunion car? It ought to look familiar to ya... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Yes the blue one was Milts old car. I think Bill is supposed to be on the Cover of Esquire magazine with some print about the white car. He will look so Dapper. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Couple of other interesting details about the car considering it was exported to France:
1. It is radio delete because France used a different frequency band. 2. The speedometer is calibrated in kilometers per hour rather then mph. 3. The top of the radiator core support is stamped with the VIN which has a pentastar at each end of the number. This was done when it landed in Paris. |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
I have heard that there were 9 - 71 Hemicuda convertibles made. (7 domestic, 2 for export) I have always wondered:
Have all 9 survived? What were the color combinations? |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
The ones I can recall are as follows:
1 yellow/white int, automatic 1 butterscotch/black int, auto 1 orange/orange int, auto 1 red/black int, auto 2 blue/blue int (both 4 speeds) 1 winchester grey (export) I dont have the info on the white car |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
By gosh, you should post the current ownership and pics if available. I know about the Yellow one, what's the scoop with the rest?
|
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
OK you guys got my curious, my net detective work finds these two so far:
One of the blue ones http://www.azalea.net/~steved/bluet.jpg The yellow one http://www.azalea.net/~steved/yellowt.jpg Both having a connection to Kevin Suydam, I assume they are the real deal for discussion purposes. Are there more accounted for? NJ-Steve is this the yellow one you refer to as owning, the one Don Johnson copied for the show? Found this too, not sure who or how accurate: [ QUOTE ] This post is basically for Mr. Suydam himself, but the information might be useful to everyone else. If one reads the june issue of Mopar Muscle magazine they will finf out that the two exported 71 Hemi "cuda Convertibles have been found, but out of the Seven 71 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles built for the states, and the one sent to Canada, only seven have been found. That makes a total of NINE 71 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles FOUND, however TEN were MADE. Good luck searching for the last one. [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
No telling who owns what car at any given time. "Deep pocket" guys spar for these cars and trade in a world well above the average enthusiast. Its my understanding that the Cuda was in a package deal that would equal a lottery winning ticket rather then a auto transaction.
In any case, according to Galen Govier, nine cars were made for the US market and two were export. Its possible that others exist, but it would require extensive documentation. |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
You have to admit the story makes for a nice treasure hunt.
I wasn't so much interested in names, I wouldn't know any of them anyway, way over my head. But would be cool to find out 3 are in Texas, 6 in New York, 1 mysterious one in Charley's building..... something like that. Wouldn't surprise me to know that a board member has one of em. It's something cool, easy to track with so much money and a small number. I bet several in here could rattle of the current stats on most of them. I've never kept up with Mopars, but I sure dig the Hemi's!!! While looking for the Cuda's I found this, I LOVE as found photo's of cool cars... http://www.azalea.net/~steved/chevelle.jpg And the sight. |

NJ-Steve is this the yellow one you refer to as owning, the one Don Johnson copied for the show? [/ QUOTE ] Yup, that's my old old car. Bought it in B- condition for $24,000 in 1985, then did a minor restoration on the car, got it in a few magazines and sold it during my last year of college for $54,000 to Otis. At the time everyone thought I was nuts (when I bought it: for paying too much and when I sold it: for taking advantage of Otis by selling it for so much) Gotta love those 1980's prices. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif |

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Charley posted pictures of three of these cars earlier in the year. Titled "Mopar Spring Fling". It's on page 8 of this forum. Patrick

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
PPPJJJFFF Thanks for that.
I knew Charley was involved some how!!!! [ QUOTE ] Yes that is the stock interior. The car has all its paperwork. The three Cuda converts are owned by two different People in Phoenix-Scottsdale. Here is a pic of me driving it right before I backed it into a garbage can similar to the one in the background. Smart guy that I am. [/ QUOTE ] https://www.yenko.net/attachments/800...8-04%20031.jpg NJSteve.... 2 orange? Does that change the count or are they not both 71? I guess this is your yellow one again, looks the same by the pics. Nice profit by the way. |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
The orange one in the back is a 70 not a 71.

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Either one of these the real deal, didn't find anything but pics?

[ QUOTE ]

The white car is a 1971 Challenger clone. The only year a Hemi Challenger R/T convertible was produced was 1970. I believe the number built was 9. In 1971 there were no Challenger R/T convertibles made at all, only hardtops, so therefore no Hemi Challenger R/T convertibles were produced. -NJSteve |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
They had the white one labeled 71 but I was suspicious on that. I don't know the ins and outs of year distinctions on these by sight, yet.

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
The second blue one? VIN even... I bought the 12/04 Mopar Action and see the 2 million buyer (Bill Weimann) is reported to own one of the two blue ones. This one or the first one I posted with the poverty hub caps? Sight I found it on

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
This might be the red one, not much to go along with the pic but I feel good about it.

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Nevermind on the "which blue one question" I answered this myself. Mopar Action said they did an article on his blue one in 12/03, here it is.

And the white 2 mil French export that started this thread, since there is no pic of it.

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
While talking locally about the Cuda's, I found out about a Pink Panther 70 Challenger RT 440 Six Pack numbers match with shaker spoilers louvers and laser stripe 90% resto'ed. He decided he didn't like anymore and pushed it out of the garage in the field behind his house. HAHA He hasn't advertised it for sale, but I think he will. If anyone wants to get a hold of this guy, email me and I'll hook you up with him.

If the 70 Hemi's are going for 7 figures too, I'd say there are a lot of poeple out there making more money than me.

Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
I've lost my mind, that's not a ragtop!!! Ignore my last post.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif This is what happens to a Pontiac guy looking into Mopars, his mind fades and his beliefs are confuzzled. I have had nightmares the last two nights of some beer drinking plum purple crazy Mopar guy trying to get me to race in front of the cop station. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif And whenever I have nightmares, Belair is always near by. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...elairSucks.gif |
Re: $2 Million Hemicuda
Just wait until the company that's repopping new '69 Camaro convertible bodies (and others) starts doing 70/71 Cuda convertibles (see the latest Hot Rod magazine cover story). No doubt Mopar will keep making versions of the Hemi crate motor, especially if we enthusiasts keep buying them at $15K each. Sounds like soon we could have "70/71 Hemi Cuda" convertibles for about $50,000 to $75,000, ready to roll. No "pedigree" with such a car but I'll bet it's coming.
