October 2004 Feature Car

<body><p align="center"><font size="6" color="#008000">October 2004 Feature Car:</font></p> <p align="center"><font size="5" color="#008000">Steve Shauger's 1968 Yenko Camaro</font></p></body>

<font color="green">Specs:
Engine (factory): L-72 (427/425hp)
Transmission: M-21 4-speed
Rear: 4.10 posi 12 bolt
Exterior color: Rally Green
Interior color: Black Standard

"Yenko ordered this car VIN 616374, under Chevrolet order MDA815 (second batch of 100) and Yenko assigned the stock number 9607 to this car. This car was received at Yenko on 4/16, prepped and shipped to Nankivell Chevrolet in Indianapolis, Indiana as part of the Super Car dealer distribution program. The original owner William Brown was a teenager at the time and he had his grandmother co-sign for the loan (possibly his parents refused). The car was a three-owner car prior to my purchasing it this past February. Ownership history is as follows: first owner 1969-1977 (William Brown), second 1977-1988 (Dr Donald McCallam) and third 1988- 2004 (Chris Edwards). The car had spent the last 35 years within 10 miles of the dealership."

"My introduction to a Yenko Camaro was in 1975. I purchased a used cowl hood for my 69 Z28. The hood had these vinyl stripes with 427 emblems on it. When I got it home one of my buddies said “do you know what you have, a Yenko hood”. Well for the last 29 years I have been pursuing the elusive Yenko Camaro, which always seemed out of reach. After attending this years BJ auction in AZ, I got caught up in the buying frenzy. Following the auction I had been contacted regarding selling my unrestored 69 L78 pace car, which I was planning to restore. Well the timing was perfect, once I confirmed the sale of the pace car, I called Chris and struck a deal on the Yenko. Well almost, I spoke to my wife (of 22years) about it and she said the following “ you have been talking about a Yenko and wanting one since I have known you, just buy it”. Talk about supporting my hobby. I flew out to Indy, and the car was nicer than described. I never did get a chance to drive it, the carb float had stuck and it barely would run. What a great feeling I got once the deal was done. I would like to thank Chris Edwards (a board member) for making the purchase a great experience. I drive and enjoy the car on a weekly basis. I have owned several L78 powered Camaros, but the L72 is a whole different experience. And the number one question I get at when driving it is, "is it real". I have been detailing and bringing the car back to how it left the dealership. I must say that the previous owners maintained the car very well. The car has always been rust free and unmolested. In fact it still retains its original engine and all original interior, as well as 39K documented miles. The car was repainted and engine rebuilt in 1988. The car is one of 34 rallye green ordered cars and is equipped with a M21 4spd, and possibly with optional gauges."

I met Chris Edwards at SCR6.
He kept telling me about this RG sYc Camaro he had at home that sold from Nankivell Chevrolet.
Now I see I should have listened more closely.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It was a long time coming, but worth the wait. Next year I am planning on bringing it to SCR8. Talk driving and enjoying them, I was at Scott S's today and had a drive in his RG survivor Z(30k miles) ...wow what a great running car. I think we were well past redline and still pulling. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: Monthly Feature car

Well I finally got in contact with the second owner who is a retired DR. He was in Canada over the summer and is returning back to Indy. He confirmed the information I stated regarding the ownership history. He also mentioned that he may have some more information on the car in his file. Lastly he mentioned he collects Packards, and his mechanic is best friends with the original owner and he will be able to get a phone# and address. Uncovering the stories and histories of these cars is the great part of owning them. I will keep you posted...

I really like it with the wheels. Makes me wish I had put them on it when I had it. I think the pics could be better. It looks too dark in those pics. That is a well kept car and a good driving car!! I really miss that car. Steve, I hope you enjoy it, as much as I did. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Monthly Feature car

As far as enjoying the car, I have been having a blast with it. I had it out last night at a local cruise night and group of teenager approached the car (most pulled up in modified Honda's). It seems that although they may not own an old muscle cars they really admire what they represent. I was amazed at the interest and wealth of knowledge they had.

Chris, care to share with us the lap you took around Indy track in the Yenko, which got you permenantly banned from the track. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Monthly Feature car

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Yeah, I remember that day! HARF(Hoosier Auto Racing Fans)had a meeting at the 500 Hotel, next door to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After the meeting they were going to drive a couple of laps around the track. Most had had a few drinks https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif so the safety workers set the pace car at 20 mph. Well, the Yenko doesn't like to run so "slow", so when we came out of turn 2 I pulled to inside of the track and waited until everybody had gone into turn 3. I brought it out to the middle of the track and just whipped that baby all the way down the back stretch. Man was it GREAT https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif I look over in the infield and I see the "yellow shirts"(safety) pointing at me and talking on the radios. I slow it down to 20 mph and when I come out of turn 4 the "yellow shirts" had formed a human chain across the track with one guy out in front, PISSED AS HELL, and pointing me to the pits. This "gentleman"...lets call him Mr.Bad Breath, proceeds to get in my face and just ream my ass. He tells me to leave.
As I was driving down pit road I saw AJ Foyts pit stall. The track always paint the drivers name on his pit stalls wall. I think that it had been AJ's last Indy 500 and I wanted a pic of the Yenko in AJ's stall. I take a couple of pics and I hear old Bad Breath screaming at me to LEAVE. I jump in and peel out..he is steaming now. Then I see Al Jr's pit (I always liked Al Jr too) so I needed a pic in his stall too. Now Bad Breath is in his golf cart and coming at me like a one man calvary. So I peel out again and leave. Some of my friends had seen me pull to the side of the track and knew what I was going to do. On their second lap they see the rubber I had laid down. When they get back to the pits they hear Bad Breath screaming about the guy in the Yenko. "That's a very rare car and if he ever comes back I'll remember him!"
Fast forward a few years and the Camaro Nats are at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I enter in the driver class, which means we can go out and drive around the track. When the time came to drive, guess who appeared standing in front of my car...YES..MR bad Breath himself. Telling me in a loud voice that he remembered me and my antics and I wasn't going on the track. The photographers had talked to me about getting some shots of my car as I drove under the famous "Gasoline Alley" sign but Bad Breath had his way and I wasn't allowed to take another "spin" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gifaround the track.
Ironically, the next time I took a lap around the track was when Steve came to Indy to look at the Yenko before he bought it. Steve wanted to visit the track and we took a tour ride around the track....wasn't NEARLY as much fun. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Steve, if you ever take it to "INDY", look out for a big guy with bad breath!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Like I said I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!
Chris
