RA III ?

1 Attachment(s)
I have been offered a -71 Le Mans with a -69 GTO engine in it. They say itīs got RA III heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. How do I determine if that is the case ?

I forgott: they said they took the manifolds off a Judge in the mid seventies. The outlet is 2―" big.

Re: RA III ?

In 69 all the 4V intakes were the same except for the RAIV. The #48 head was the RAIII head as well as the standard head on a stick shift GTO. I cant really tell for sure what is the head # in the picture( maybe 96 ). If you list the part numbers or casting #'s of what is there I can tell you what you got for sure. Jim

Re: RA III ?

69 RA IIIs had 48 0r 62 heads,70 RA IIIs had 12 or 13s.The RA engines had a touch more cam and diff exhaust manifolds. The intake manifolds were the same for all 69-70 engines RAs except RA IVs.Tom

Re: RA III ?

Looks like what we have here is a pair of ultra rare Ram air II heads if not the whole engine. Can you give me the code on the block?? The exhaust manifolds are 70-71 Ram iv-455ho manifolds. I'll bet the engine runs pretty good! The intake is different for 69-70. The webbing in the center of the intake is closed on 70's. Looks like you have a 68-69 intake. Nice score! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

The car is too far from me to go there and look at the numbers myself. Iīll see if I can get them before the car is delivered.
Can you tell me the difference between a Ram Air II head and a Ram Air III ?

Ram II= ROUND PORTS. Ram III= common D-port heads. GO get the car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Re: RA III ?

That makes sense. He has been taking about round ports and special ordering the heads in the seventies.

Re: RA III ?

Got the car !
Block # could be: 9799506, itīs really hard to see. Itīs a four-bolt main block.
Intake # is 9799068 I believe.
One of the # 96 heads are dated: A 22 9
The left hand exhaust manifold # is: 478141LH

Iīll get back with pictures.

Re: RA III ?

Weren't the 4 bolt main blocks only available in the Super-Duty Trans Ams?

Re: RA III ?

Double check the block numbers 1968 400RA #9792506 . That same casting number is a RA IV if it is dated 69. The 96 heads = 19681/2 Ram Air II 400, round exh 2.11/1.77 71 cc's.

What are the two letter codes on the block below the passenger side head. See below for codes.

1964 35B,38S,44B,47S,45B,46G,50Q 421HO
1965 WG,WH,WJ,YH,YJ,YK 421HO
1966 WG,WH,WJ,YH,YJ,YK 421HO
1967 WG,WJ,Y2,Y3,XK,YH,YK,YY 428CID
1967 XS,XP,XR 400RA
1968 WI,XN,XP,XS,WU,WY,XY,XW,WS 400RA
1968 WG,WJ,YH,YK 428CID
1969 WJ,WL,YK,XG,WG,WF 428CID
1969 XP,WW,XN,WH 400RAIV
1970 YZ,WS,WH.WW,XN,XP 400RAIV
1970 WA,WG,YA,YH,XF 455CID
1971 WL,WC,WJ,WG,YA,YC,YG,YE 455CID
1972 WD,WM,YR,YE 455CID

Hope this helps https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Skier,I believe RAII's RAIV's and 1970 RA III's had 4 bolt mains as well.

Mike, it is the fourth # that is hard to see. I put the camera back there, but Iīm not sure. I guess it must be a 2.
Where do I find the casting date on the block ?

Pic of intake.

Re: RA III ?

I BELIEVE WHAT YOU HAVE IS A RAM AIR II LONG BLOCK. 2506 IS A 68 RAM AIR AND A 69 RAM AIR IV BLOCK AND SINCE YOU HAVE THE HEADS ALSO,I WOULD ASSUME YOU HAVE A COMPLETE ENGINE WITH A 70 INTAKE ON IT. I WOULD BET IT HAS A 9041 [T] CAM IN IT ALSO. NICE FIND! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: RA III ?

You nailed it Don ! Thankīs guys !
Knowing what it is we will pull it out of this car and find a more correct home for it.
We will gladly ship this(less than 3000 miles since being rebuilt)engine back to the U.S. if it is worth the cost.

Are you sure the 8 in the SR82141 means 1968? All the SR blocks I have seen have an 8 as the first digit including 1971 and 1972 blocks I have. A real find for sure. Jim

4 bolt 400's are pretty rare. I have one and don't believe it came from a FB. Have to go look at the code.
