The 68 Olds Cutlass Ram Rod come to mind. Predecessor to the W-31. Came out of Olds Engineering (Dave H jump in here)
Other than wagons Olds only offered their big engines (with 4 bbl)in the 442. In 70 they offered the 455 in an SX. As with most things in the late 60's if you ordered it,was patient, and got the right person than it got built.
To the best of my knowledge though there was no such thing as a w-30 type engine in anything other than a 442 as far as Olds is concerned. Also COPO is a Chevrolet term, not used by any other division. Oldsmobile used a term called Wholsale Car Order Form which was used for fleet (car rental companies) and the Hurst Olds Programs.

There is an older thread about this... In an article I have, Olds said specifically it had no plans to produce a "442 Wagon". There were wagons as previously stated with 455's and you could have probably arranged to get a W-25 hood from the dealer maybe the factory too, but there weren't any 442 Wagons...

thanks canuck, i thought COPO was a GM term. i have wondered why none of the other GM model dealers did not follow suit with chevrolet. it seems pontiac would have been right on the coat tails of the L/72 chevelle/camaro with lemans/firebird versions. thanks for all the replies, dennis

Royal Pontiac, Knafel Pontiac and others were right in the thick of it pre'70 w/428 transplants in both FB and LeMans/Tempest/GTO.

In '70 the base GTO engine could be ordered in the tempest, in '71 the 455HO was available in any A body 2 dr (T-37, LeMans)(HT,Sedan,Conv) and in '72 the same was available in LeMans except for the Luxury LeMans. In '72 you had to order the endura nose w/RA but not in '71. Don't thing any other auto maker had that for '71/'72. If so would like to hear about it.

I like the wierd ones like the Chevelle 300 w/SS package or the '70 1/2 Falcon (Torino) sedan w/429 SCJ.

Unfortunately, today you have to order a 'package' to get any performance. Sure miss the 'good' old days.

Olds had the '70 Cutlass SX.

jlp, thats what makes me wonder if any of those transplant dealers ever tried to order the 428 engine factory installed along the lines of the way chevy did with the 427? maybe the GM brass would not go for it? dennis

For one thing, Chevy had carte blanche with a lot of stuff that other GM brands could not get away with.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Knafel did the work... like a Motion/Nickey conversion... beats me... I barely know Chevys forget about Pontiacs...

Re: lemans skylark cutlass COPO?

The Knafel thing was not a COPO-ish item. 400s were available on the Tempest. They just created a package to promote an image and RR fighter.

Re: lemans skylark cutlass COPO?

motosportgreen66,
I have one of those books and on the back it shows one for Olds also. Maybe others. I am not home so can't look.

Remember that the COPO cars were one year only. Up until that time the 427's were dealer installed like Pontiacs. But like any other dealer, if you had the $$$$ you could get anything. If not factory then dealer.

Oh,those were the days my friend, and we thought it would NEVER END......but, it did.

Re: lemans skylark cutlass COPO?

I guess that you could call the Hurst/ Olds a COPO type car, except that the factory never claimed to put the motor in themselves. The story goes that the cars were delivered to Demmer Engineering to have the 400 pulled out, the 455 installed and all of the 'Hurst' stuff was done. This was done to keep the GM brass happy. Olds obeyed the 400 cu in limit for the 'A' bodies with this move. In reality, the 455 was placed in the chassis on the line at Lansing. I spoke with a couple of the guys that worked on the line in '68 and '69 and they said that the red motors in those 'A' body frames stood out like sore thumbs. Re: lemans skylark cutlass COPO?

I believe some '68s have been found to be COPOs too. One of the Yenko guys should know this for sure.

The Knafel Tempests were regular 400s. This was the top engine for this car and was the same as the standard GTO's engine, but it was rated lower in the Tempest.

Of course, in '71, the top Pontiac engine was available in most of the A-bodies besides the GTO.
