Keith Martin owner/editor of Sports Car Magazine and last years Speed Vision commentator at BJ was according to this post escorted off the BJ property for his scathing article on the muscle car market? Can anyone at BJ shed some light on this or confirm???

Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
That just proves on what I heard Crag Jackson is in trouble
I saw him on Tv at the end of the auction Looked shell shocked He removed Keith Martin but he can not remove every one that does not agree With him I know He was told in uncertain terms last night that If he wants the high caliper cars and the owner/buyers to return He will be forced to return the reserve If not We can expect the B/J auction become nothing more Than breathing ground to Unload bogus / fake and anything goes type of car. Sad in a way he got to greedy This year there are a lot of unhappy campers with Crag Jackson Hell last night there was unloading pianos Guitars and in the end Sunday they are unloading soap box Debby type cars something I just did not want to see Dont be surprised in the next few months there will be a lot a negativity written About this years show |
Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
That really surprises me about Mr.Martin.
I haven't read the recent article in question, but always thought he had a good positve perspective of the market in general, especially what he had to say here in February 2006 right after B/J.... February 27, 2006 By TERRY BOX / The Dallas Morning News "If you're considering cashing in your life savings to buy a '65 Shelby GT 350 Mustang or '70 big-block Chevelle, I say do it. Keith Martin has spent the last 20 years devising a system for rating collectible cars. The ratings are detailed in his new book, which is due out this spring. But no one mistakes me for a financial adviser, so maybe you should wait for Keith Martin's new book, the Martin Guide to Collectible Cars, due out this spring. http://www.whas11.com/sharedcontent/...eithmartin.jpg Mr. Martin, editor and publisher of Sports Car Market magazine, says he has spent the last 20 years devising a system for rating collectible cars including an A to F grade on their investment value. Thanks partly to high-profile, televised events such as the Barrett-Jackson Auction last month which generated $100 million in sales collector and classic cars are sizzling hot. But first-timers always "buy with their hearts," Mr. Martin says, which may explain how some boomers the primary drivers in this growth depart for Barrett-Jackson with a pocket full of cash and return with a 1980 MGB. Mr. Martin said his book "can keep you from buying dumb. We're trying to wrap our arms around what makes a car collectible. What is it about a particular car that makes it special?" He rates cars in five categories: rarity, beauty, performance, historical significance and fun. A car can accrue a maximum of 20 points in each category. Like those tests you used to take in high school while daydreaming about the cars you're now trying to buy 100 is the elusive perfect score. "We want to provide a marketplace snapshot to our readers so they can quickly and easily understand why a '69 Camaro is more collectible than a '71 or why a '73 Porsche 911 is more desirable than a '76," Mr. Martin said. In a sample of 100 cars from the book, the highest-rated car was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (score: 98, investment grade A, price range $10 million to $14 million). The lowest was the aforementioned 1975-80 MGB (score: 50, investment grade F, price range $5,000 to $8,500). When the book comes out, you'll be able to find ordering information at www.sportscarmarket.com. And for those who actually do head off to an auction, Mr. Martin has another tool: SCMSearch, which is free at least for now and available at [email protected]. Send that address a query on a particular car and it will reply with an e-mail to your home computer, work computer or Treo and BlackBerry thingamadoobers. The reply will give you up to 10 results from the sales of similar vehicles, Mr. Martin said. Despite this era of million-dollar Hemi 'Cudas and six-figure Camaros, Mr. Martin doesn't think that the market is overheated. In the last three years, he noted, 10,000 first-time bidders have registered at Barrett-Jackson. "It's driving the old guard crazy, but these new people don't care what something sold for five years ago," he said. "They only want to know what it's worth now." Moreover, Mr. Martin thinks that many of the collectible cars from 40 or so years ago will hold their value for at least another decade. "Modern cars are moving farther and farther away from the cars of the '60s," he said. "I've written that the golden era of collectible cars stretches from '54 to '74. Toward the end of that period, safety and emissions standards began to have an impact. From '68 on, really, you no longer got a car that was purely what the designer wanted it to be. You got compromises." Terry Box is the automotive writer for The Dallas Morning News. |

Don't go to BJ and say that all the good cars are at RM and Russo, or the goons will come for you https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif.

Andy
The source of the link is here: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/page/2/ Post and title: Keith Martin ejected from Barrett-Jackson January 19th, 2007 at 8:40 am by Daniel Strohl Here is the Actual link to the "suspected" article: http://www.sportscarmarket.com/articles/archives/978 PS. Remember boys and girls since BJ is just "entertainment" for the masses these days some one must have forgot to tell Martin. That means Craig and Keith can just patch things right up! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Phil |
Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
Colin's article in the above link hits the nail on the head and is an unemotional/unbiased snapshot of where he thinks the market/hobby is and where it is headed. Well worth a couple minutes of your time to read it.

Colin who?
|
Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
Colin is right on the money (no pun intended), with his investment/valuation analysis. I will say one thing though, since the valuation run-up has taken hold, I have far more fun with my clones, while my numbers car just gathers climate controlled dust.

Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
Todays market values have recognized an 11% deduction for climate controlled dust. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
My article posted above has nothing to do with Keith Martin's problems at BJ. They stem from his "Beanie Babies and Muscle Cars" article discussed here previously.
While I am a Contributing Editor for SCM, and do not agree with Keith's article or its presentation, what makes the magazine great is having a good group of real car guys being able to voice their opinions. As they say, reasonable people can reasonably disagree, and I chalk this whole debate up to one of those times. Look for my follow-up article in next month's issue, the lead photo is an LS6 we all know and love burning the tires off at SCR9. As far as my relationship with BJ, I have been a customer there for well over a decade and have known Steve Davis since he was just a lowly consignor like me and Craig since he was just Brian's little brother helping park cars. I spoke to both Steve and Craig this past week and, as of yet, I see no goons waiting to drag me away https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Regards, Colin Comer |

Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
Well said. My heart loved that red '68 RS Yenko clone at Mecum in October. The same car was sold in the big tent at the rear of the grounds last weekend. Fortunately, my brain didn't follow my heart on that car and I walked away from it.

http://www.sportscarmarket.com/articles/archives/978 [/ QUOTE ] So Colin, how do you feel about a '67 RS/SS 396/325 auto? One of 1473? Just kidding! A well written article that I will forward to a few of my car buddies. As for "continuation cars," I would happily drop the coin for a CSX4000 Cobra but not expect stupid money for it someday at a Barrett-Jackson type venue. I agree with your sentiment: let it depreciate while driving the hell out of it--and ENJOY it. Just don't get starry-eyed after watching 40 hours of auction coverage! By the way, were you happy with the selling price of your gorgeous six-pack Bee? |
Re: Ketih Martin escorted off Barrett Jackson Prop
Colin..That is a great article, very well said. I see that your latest 289 Cobra sold, saying that it's a nice car is a gross understatement!!
