Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
I see a bent rod in the upper right..drop a valve?
|
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Hydro locked... oouch!
Scott said it fired and ran. Not good - but ran. |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
What the???.... Hydraulic'd??
|
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Air compresses, fuel or water does not. It either lost a head gasket and ate a cylinder full of coolant, or had a stuck needle and seat filled a cylinder with enough fuel- it fired on one cylinder came around and stopped on that one. Ran thru a car wash while running ???
I say OUCH either way!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
"Hydraulic'd?? "
We used to see that a lot with my friend's '63 FI Corvette. The fuel blocks on those units were the culprit and would leak fuel into a cylinder. When the engine fired quickly, (which didn't happen often)if the cylinder containing the fuel was on a compression stroke............ TROUBLE! |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
totally cool. congrats.
|
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif nice... nice cowl plenum hole as well... beats the 1000 drill holes and a chisel I have seen on some... LOL

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
we used to see that with guys who bought brand new race boats with no experience driving them ,brought them up to speed and then slammed the throttles shut, water would shoot up through the water jackets and load the cylinders, end of ride...

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Finished the brake system today. The 4 piston calipers came out great- Calipers online did a great job. The prop. valve and distribution block from RIGHT STUFF I have to say different on! Niether piece looked even close when I got them. Ended up disassembling ,blasting and replating the old stuff. Thought I had the wrong power booster because there was no delco stamp,Then I saw the 8515 stamping and reused it.
Starting on the dash assembly next. Want to have done and drivable for the BERGER show and reunion. |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Does anyone know what month the 302 emblem was replaced by the Z/28 emblem on the 1968? Saw a LeMans blue 1968 that had the 302 type. Later on it got a new intake manifold under warranty. Don't know what the issue was there. Thanks.

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
The 302 emblem was superseded by the Z/28 emblem in mid March of '68.

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Tim,
Just don't blast that one wheel with the original paint and tire on it. And that smog pulley is original, though it's not deepgroove. Personally, I would reuse/restore most of the parts that are with the car since most are original. |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Hey Kurt, didn't Bob S's red '68 Z which came from Berger also have red painted rally wheels on it?
-Jon |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Same car- Hey kurt- I know ,was replating stuff that had rusted while sitting. Thought I'd have it running by now BUTTT..... The distrib. had been left out for the last few years while sitting. Saw something in the dist. hole so I pulled the intake to look and found a MOUSE NEST that filled the whole freakin lifter valley!!! Motor was fresh-JUNK now. Needs to come down and gone threw again.
This means big delay. |
Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Tim,
Yeah, I heard about the mouse. Bummer...... Jon, Yup, the car migrated about 15 miles south. |

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Pulled the motor tonight.. A view of the carnage!! When I lifted the motor I heard marbles rolling around in the oil pan. NUTS!!!!!!! Living quarters in the lifter valley , Pantry down below!! If you love somthing DON'T TREAT IT LIKE THIS.. Seal it up - DEATH TO ALL RODENTS !!!!!! Furry little bastards.

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back

Re: '68 Berger Z/28 brought back
Wow! My friend had a '49 Chevy that blew the motor because of a mouse nest in the engine.
