"Gobi Beige" '70 W30
This caught my eye as I had never seen this color (code 50) on a '70 442 let alone a W30 . Looks fine with the dog dishes. Don't know my 442s so I can't speak to correctness. Am sure Dr. Olds had a classy name for this color.
Enjoy. |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
That's "Bamboo" in Olds-speak. A couple of shades darker was "sandalwood". Classy woody plant theme that year. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
The guy bought it for 32 or so and is trying to flip it. He's gonna pass because of it.
Would look better with gold stripes . . . |

Not sure what you mean by "He's gonna pass because of it." So, how do you 442/W30 gurus assess this car? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
This car looks very nice. Only things that dont look original are the red inners, they are repops and the shifter handle from a certain angle looks like it is from the console application.
Alternator should be an open face unit for this year. This car was built the same date as a 70 w-30 I just acquired. I have a friend who has a Bamboo 70 w-30 with gold stripes and gold interior> his is all original. |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Got to love those W30's!!!
I had a SX that color. Its a strange color for sure. |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Paul,
One thing I noticed was the washer jar on the left side. I've never had a 70 but wasn't the washer jar on the right side for non-AC 4 speed cars? This really is one of the nicest looking W30's I've seen (for sale) in a while. Wonder how good it looks in person? Joe |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
I can tell you i have done buisness with peter before and he is a stand up guy that has some quallity iron, take a look at the gsx he is selling also, w-30 looks great but i also think the alternator is wrong not sure about he liners, i have never seen a w-30 in that color, but it looks great with the steelies,

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Sweet car...love the steelies too!.
Both my '69 and '70 442 Post cars were gold...if I just had've known what gold they really were, I'd be driving them into my golden years?. ~ Pete https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |

442W30, Good intel. Not sure what you mean by "He's gonna pass because of it." [/ QUOTE ] Missing out on a car and then padding the pockets of a dealer is not what he wants to do. By the way, many people say they've never seen a car this color before. What about the car on the cover of the "442 Resto and ID Guide"? http://www.amazon.com/Oldsmobile-4-4-2-W...TF8&s=books |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Think that car on the book cover is "Sebring Yellow".
|
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Did notice one more thing, the right fender appears to have been replaced (71-72 style), the picture showing the left fender is too fuzzy to tell.
It does say "all original panels".....? Joe |

Think that car on the book cover is "Sebring Yellow". [/ QUOTE ] No it is not. Here's why: 1) Sebring Yellow is MUCH yellower. 2) The car on the cover used to be in Otis Chandler's collection, and I know for a fact his car was Bamboo. |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Hmm, Sounds like you know the car better than I do for sure. I could swear that cover car was for sale on Hemmings.com or some such site within the last 2 or three years & thought the ad said it was the cover car and it was Sebring Yellow.
But sounds as though I am mistaken. Joe |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
I did not look at the trim tag. Does anyone know what time of year it was built? Dave H was talking about inventory control (or lack of it) especially toward the end of the model year. Could be that it was a late build and some of the '71 fenders were close by and put on??? I love the look of steelies, but with the w-30 stripes on the car, you weren't fooling anyone! Put on some SS II's with some Wide Ovals and get the party started! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
So were the W27 diff cover and painted sport mirrors add ons? Or would these have not necessarily been called out on the broadcast sheet?
|
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
The W-27 diff cover was a 'dealer add-on' and if my memory serves me correct, the sport mirrors were part of the 442 model. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Is this the same car?? Sure looks like it...

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
That's the same car.
Hey Rusty, I've thought about that too. Do you know when they usually made the switch over on model years? The broadcast card in the picture shows 10/28. If they were still making 70 models as late as November, you may be right about the later version fenders. I've only recently seen a couple 1970 W cars with those later fenders claiming to be original. All of the other 70 W30's I've ever seen had the flat style. Joe |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Couple things point to replacements fenders:
1. Build date codes include 10B, 10E, 11B, 12A, 2D, 3D. So they were built steadily throughout the year. (Taken from the Olds FAQ on 442.com. I know, not the definitive source.) But it does point to this being an early car. 2. GM was on srtike during Sept., Oct., & Nov. 1970. Could've been a bunch more W30's in 70..... Joe |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
This car was built Oct 28 1969. As I stated earlier it is the same build date as My 70 W-30. Seial numbers and sequence numbers are real close.
Washer jar should be on right side inner fender for 455 equipped cars in 1970 w/o ac. Photos from Golden Classics site show different engine color blue and valve covers on wrong side. E bay photos have closer color blue and valve covers correctly installed. Fenders definitely have the bumps which means they are a replacement fender on this car. |
Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
Are you saying this is a different car? The Golden Classics car went to South Florida where this car is for sale.

Re: "Gobi Beige" '70 W30
