New project coming along

This is the Orange L-78, 69 El Camino I recently picked up. It finally stopped raining around here and I was able to get it out of the trailer and into the garage on Fri. By the end of the day today (Sat) the body was ready to pull off the frame. The car has a 350 small block in it now, but will have it's numbers matching 396-375 under the hood, when this project is complete. More pic to follow.

Bill,

Very nice! By the looks of it your extremely ENERGIZED to get this project rolling....I would had done exactly what you did in pulling her all apart right away. A very exciting project. I wish I was there to see it in person....and of course give you a helping hand.

The floor looks very solid....are those the original front springs? Does it have tach and gauges? Black vinyl?

Dan.

Re: New project coming along

Thanks for the relpys guys, but it's been brought to my attention (on Team Chevelle) that perhaps I didn't word the discription very well and the the car was being misrepresented. I'd just worked on the car for 14 hours.

A previous owner stuck the small block and 3 speed trans in the car years ago and saved the original 396-375/M-20. The block/trans came with the car, although they both need parts and a complete rebuild, as well as the original rear. Actually, I just bought a complete rebuilt trans from a friend. I just have to put all the patrs from that trans into the original and that will be good to go. Most of the engine parts are on their way, and the rear should be finished in a week or so. Thanks for the replys guys. I'll post pics, as progress proceeds, if the folks are interested.

Every single person on team chevelle loves to call everything a "clone" or tell someone they are misrepresenting something. Just ask those clowns what kind of Chevelle they have.....

Keep us entertained Bill. Most of us get bored over the winter months and look forward to seeing how REAL car guys spend their free time. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. I'm gonna need it. This will be one of the more challenging projects I've every attempted in my lifetime, and I built my house when I was 22. Started fabricating a dolly to put the body on. Should be ready to go by the weekend. I hope to get the body off the chassis, and on to the dolly Sat or Sun. Heres a shot of tonights progress.

Bill,

Nice dolly, the larger caster will provide easy travel....good choice.

Keep them pics coming

A couple pics from a few busy evenings. Next, I want to get the body on the dolly I built, then strip the chassis down so the frame can go to the sand blaster.

Do you check the frame over for factory paint marks before you blast it, or am I being too fussy?

Re: New project coming along

Here's the results of a couple more late nights. The El Camino frame is striped and ready to be blasted, and the dolly is finished. The body should be on the dolly this weekend.

Bill, Please post a cost and material list along with dimensions to build a cart for my 70 ragtop. I know Albert has the Chevelle dolly so you'll have to ask him for the info. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

How well does that tile hold up in your garage, Bill? I wanted to put that in mine but I do a lot of body work and paint and would not want to mess it up totally.

I'm happy with the tile. I do woodworking so it's good for sweeping saw dust. The two things it can't take is the floor jack and jack stands. I have 1/4" plywood I use under them, then it's no problem. I also don't get it wet much. Not sure that would be good too often. Body work won't hurt it, but you wouldn't want to hose it down to paint.

Well, I guess I will deal with the bare concrete.

Re: New project coming along

The frame and rear housing are blasted. Some minor rust pit filling and it should be ready for paint next week. All the rear rebuild stuff (posi unit, bearing/seal kit, axles, gears) is here, and ready to go. That should be finished next week too.

Nova Jed,You can sand your floor w/24" floor sander 40 grit then stain/seal,it will look like terrazzo.

There is enough dust in there already. Its all from two cars. The sucker is getting broken in.

Update on ElCamino resto: Here's the progress from the past 2 weeks. Just about finished with the chassis. Should be getting disc brake parts back from plating this week, and that should finish it up. . The wheels are ready for blasting and re-paint. Then on to body striping, and metal work.

Thanks guys! Jed, I used Plasti-Kote Cast Finish. I like it. It has a slight sheen to it. I think it looks more like cast iron than some of the others.
