My .02 on Barrett-Jackson

All the way up to the start of this years auction I was a firm believer that this owuld be the last year they could pull off running all "No Reserve" cars. I thought the quality cars would go somewhere else and only lesser cars would be there. When their feature vehicle was Robosaurus I thought it was a joke.

After attending and looking at lots of quality cars and the prices they got for them I am amazed at just how wrong I was. If I had the money I would have owned Robosaurus. I would have dressed him up like Santa Claus at XMAS time and terrorized my town. It is a amazing piece of engineering. Barrett-Jackson is one huge party and a very good one at that. You don't have to have the best of the best cars. The auction had something for everyone. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Like it or not it has become a tradition. It fits perfectly into the winter gap in Speeds line up,and serves as a platform to postion and promote speedweeks. They are smart inviting people like Robert Yates,Ray Everenham,T.S. etc as it attracts the crossover viewer market.Defintely the theatre of the absurd with the early stuff(i.e. pasta making 308 Fazazz and sewer sucking RR on Dayton's) but they made ya laugh all the same.Looked like more than a few cars were bought that could be sold higher elsewhere..

My only problem is the amount of commercials, and the heavy Ford overtones courtesy the homer with the shades. They can't show every car and have to pay bills but it sure looked choreograhed to cut away whenever possible when GM cars were up.Personally think they should make it a three day event with longer hours-would save the consignors and bidders quite a bit on incidentals. All said it is a great event, something for every one..but if I ever sell there it will be down the street.

I agree with Charlie. I expected this year to be down. In some cases prices were, but the quality and documented cars got their price. A few jokes were thrown in (General Lee).
I also felt BJ management responded to the feedback they were receiving and took a page from the lawsuit and made some changes.
Watching it on TV was a little painfull with all the advertisments, but that is how the bills get paid.
BTW, does Craig say anything other that "way under the money".
Kudos to Bruce and Sam for the photo coverage. I will be there next year.

After being there this year and seeing the Vague and or "Creative" wording being used.....It's pretty obvious that Re-creation or Clone cars are getting to be more of the norm........The Oregon Plated cars seem to get away with it over the years, so the "Standard" of what's deemed ethical has so of gone to the Wayside........Now......Most of the People on this Site are Smart enough to sort thru the cars and know what's going on........But.....The average person going there that get's caught up in the Feeding Frenzy (Buying) and T.V. Camera's (Hype) are not as Sophisticated as you guy's are.....and are probably looking at the car for the First time when it hit's the Block under all those Light's and look's like a Perfect car from 100' away........That's the way it "IS"......Like it or Not.....the "Made" Cars are now a Part of this Cycle and the Oregon Guy probably doesn't care what we or anyone else thinks about what is going on.......and besides, a lot of people don't care if the cars are real or not........They just want it........"And" it's there......

Did anybody count how many 55-57 T-birds were featured on the coverage? It was just ridiculous. They would cut away from much more interesting cars just to arrange their TV coverage around those old Ford 2-doors. So what if it was the only 57 T-bird made in Metallic Fleshtone with matching virulent, pus-colored interior. They are boring, old cars.

I never saw what the green 70 Hemi Charger went for. And what was up with the tan 70 Hemicuda going for $140K. There's gotta be a story behind that sale!

I thought that Spanky has lost his touch a bit. Many times he had to stop and find his bidder. He even had to back up several thousand dollars and start over a few times. The other auctioneers didn't seem to have that problem.

I also think the lawsuit at least influenced things. The hammer was held for a long time and many times the auctioneers looked around and said "we don't want any mistakes!"

I agree with Charley about the cars @ Barrett Jacksos there was some very nice stuff there, original, concept, one off, and resto-mod, but just from the pics posted on this site it looks like Russo and Steele had some very top notch muscle cars, the only thing I don't agree with was Craig Jackson bidding on non-charity items, i.e. Robosaurus, because after Craig bid $450K and the bid wouldn't move after that they were not going to quit working it until it did, and Craig had a look of concern on his face about taking Robosaurus home, but as far as Craig bidding on charity cars and raising money for charities with no sale fees involved, then there is no conflict of interest that I can see there, just my .02 cents, maybe I am wrong.

Charlie et all:
Not ever have been a BJ attendee - I have a question. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif I was shooting the bull today with a car affecinado and we talked about the BJ results. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif One bit of trivia I heard a TV commentator site is the # of cars that were on the docket last year (07), and then were back again this year (08) - like that cuda that lost over a hundredK from last years auction. Anyway...one questions that came up:
What percentage of the cars are actually "bought" and exchnage owners?? The presumption is many cars are "bought" by the current owners (still have to pay taxes and applicable fees). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif I don't know, that's why I'm asking. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson

Does "Well Bought" mean that the seller got screwed? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
IMO, since Ford was the dominant sponsor, it is not surprising that other brands were given less screen time. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Also, some of the cars that Craig Jackson said were under the money WERE under the money. There were numerous hot rods, resto mods and some admitedly incorrect retorations, like the yellow Shelby Mustang, that sold for less than what it would have cost to put them together.
The '68 and '69 Camaro resto mods cost the sellers a bunch of money to build, and they both sold for half of that.
As Jay Leno said about himself, being the president of the "More Money than Brains Club", some guys always end up upside down on their pet projects, and get their lunch handed to them. How many time has it been discussed that $100k was invested to restore a car worth $75k? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

I'm guessing that over 95% of the cars went to new owners. Some cars that show up the next year are probaly brought back to sell because they bought it under the influence and then woke up, maybe think they are gonna make money, tired of the POS etc. I don't think there was any planning on what cars to exclude from TV coverage by going to commercial breaks. They have no need to do that. As fo r "under the money" etc..It is a auction and that is what happens at auctions. There are great deals and there are stupid deals.

As far as Ford is concerned, hey, they ponied up the sponser $$. IMO, yet another lost opp. by GM, and yet again even the Dodge is getting more coverage than the new Camaro.

Robosaurus has to be seen up close to really appreciate how cool it is, watching it on tv it looks hokey see it in person and watch it work is another deal I was right under it at night spitting flames etc..fricken cool toy!!!

I think the guy said he has been running it for 18yrs? pretty trick piece today unreal to think how to build today let alone back then.

as far as the bidding went it they looked around the room and asked if anyone wanted in on a car pretty nice of BJ if you ask me and as it should be, no exscuse for not bidding unless you went for a walk, they worked pretty much every rig to death trying to get more money for it, falls under it is what is kind of thing.

over all its a real fun time and lots of cool cars for sale at the auctions and around town, mark your calendar for next year and Get R Done, plus you can always harass Charlie if you get bored, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif.

GM was there with their own room with new cars on display also. They gave great coverage to the new ZR1 Vette with Leno giving it a great intro.
Robosaurus is a engineering marvel. I spoke to the guy for awhile. They have traveled everywhere with it doing shows and it even has standing bookings if the new owner wants to make money with it. It was reverse engineered to fold itself into a 48' trailer footprint that is 13.5' tall. The 5th wheel pin is under it's chin. You just tow it down the road like you would any other big rig trailer.

I thought the car market would be pretty strong considering the stock market and real estate situation. It didn't seem like as many $300-600K cars but a lot more cars into solid money like the $60-120K range. Looks like some strong numbers at R&S as well.

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson

Kind of a pity it seems to me that what many consider to be the worlds premier classic car collector auction is defined by Robosarous and that on prime time Saturday viewers and attendees were subjected to actor/singer powerhouse John Schnider standing on top of his column shift Charger. It really is more a show or event now than it is a place astute collectors go to buy and sell significant muscle.

It seems to me that Mecum is now the only auction house where you can buy/ sell and look at truly significant muscle.

Another issue entirely is Charleys fixation with Robosaurous. Our fearless leader the owner of the vaunted supersnake and a ZL-1 among other rare muscle is now openly lusting after what amounts to be an overgrown fire breathing toy for about a half a million. I guess when you dabble in three million dollar Mustangs a half million dollar toy robot is chump change. LOL LOL

Me, I am going to Mecum's spring auction to see Dave C's. collection get sold off. Dave has more significant muscle in his shop then BJ had all week IMHO.
