License plate restoration

Any one have any recommendations on vintage license plate restoration? Looking to get my original CA plates restored.

Thanks mark

My son did my Texas 65 plates. DMV thought they were the best they've seen. Stripped to bare metal. A Lexus color was the best match. Hand painted the letters and numbers.

I too restored my own and was amazed how well they look.
As he said, strip down to bare metal, then paint by hand. For a more realistic look, tape up & protect the letters/numbers after you strip it down, then lay the background paint on heavy so a few drip marks show like originals do.
Takes a steady hand to do the lettering, but take your time & do the outside border of each character first, then relax & fill in the inside.

Are you guys using a brush for the letters and numbers?? I bought a small ink roller and was going to try that.

I use a brush and gently "pool dab" the paint onto each character,if you know what I mean.Takes more then one coat, but it looks much better in the end.

I had Wayne Tyler in Virginia restore a few vintage Maryland dealer tags. Very, very satisfied with the results.

Ink roller is the best

I've used the ink roller (brayer) with great results.
