58 Ferrari Ellena

Here is a start of my thread for the 58 Ferrari Ellena that I am restoring to Pebble Beach Quality.
It's not American Muscle, but thought the site member would enjoy the process I'm going thru to restore the car. 49 of these cars are made - 15 know to exist....considered preproduction cars before Pinafarina was hired to build production Ferrari's starting with the 59 250 PF Coupe. This was moving the car out of the owners tractor trailer way out south of Reno - off the grid place . It was acquired in 74 by the person i bought the car from. He took it apart completely and stored stuff in coffee cans and bins and moved 4-5 times over the years until i purchased the the car in September of 2014. With the exception of the orig motor, everything else was broken down the last nut, bolt and screw and NOT labeled! All original drive train certified in the Ferrari world. Of course - V12 :-))) More to come..... Me, Dennis, Shaun and my neighbor Eric getting it out of the transport. Thanks to Shaun and Dennis for getting me the forklift to the house to get the crates off the transporter! |
Wow Eddie, that's a car that makes a car guy quiver! Never seen 1 before so thanx for the pics. I see some stude, some cobra and possibly some sunbeam traits that followed the styling.
Good Stuff. |
That is soooo cool Ed. Thanks. I love that 50s styling cue of protruding fender headlights and a large oval grille! Is that a Pininfarina body?

Very cool. Looks like they stole some design elements from the Loewy coupes.
|
Great project! Unidentified Ferrari parts, huh? I wish you luck in your quest of perfection.
Just making it on the lawn at Pebble is what many dream about and few are able to achieve. Somehow I think you can pull it off. Please keep this thread going. |
Very interesting car, this thread will be one to follow Eddie! And presumably no AIMs out there for 1958 Ferraris, so working out where all the fasteners go will be.....fun.
|
Eddie,
This will be a treat. Glad your going to take us all along for the ride! This is some rarified air to be sure!!!! |
Great car, my buddy at work just bought back a '62 250 his dad owned back in the 70s, I'm not much of a Ferrari guy but damn that's a beautiful car.
|
Thanks guys....will update with more pics, we are close to getting paint on the body, underneath and engine compartment. I have learned to make a lot of missing parts, and most importantly made friends around the world seaching for missing items.
Not a restoration for the faint hearted and light checkbook. Charlie, yes that is the finished car, a very good example of a restoration to one of the highest levels on one of these cars. I have about a 100 reference pics of that car that has helped me along the way. Beautiful example. I have also located 2 original car that I have visited last year that has been so beneficially in the accuracy of restoring my car. Like the camaro stuff we all know and love, it is in the details when you strive for a assembly line correct restoration. These are no different - with the exception that there are a limited number of qualified enthusiast and cars to refer to.....but that is part of the challenge that drives me. Thanks again for the compliments....more to come.....the transformation has been amazing. |
Wow what a cool car I can't wait to see it done Ed
|
Super cool! (small block Chevy would be day 2 ...?)
|
There is one that i know of that has a SBC in it......one of the 15.
I think mine is one of 10 or so with the original motor/drive train - have to check on that number, but it is 10 or less for sure as i believe i know where most of the 15 are located. |
Truly awesome car Eddie with some gorgeous styling. I had never heard of one of these before but I look forward to seeing further progress. What color was this one originally and are you going to return it to that color?

Will be a great car Eddie. Thanks for sharing.
I have ran into some issues on parts for my 300G convertible but yours would be tougher! I found a guy that hand made me a whole trunk pan work of art! |
Wow! That is amazing that a person is that talented to duplicate what the factory had stamped. I was looking for auction results for that Ferrari, but didn't see any; I'll keep searching.

Those are my images
This is timely for me ...
I am in the middle of moving a private collection of vehicles from Napa, CA to Virginia City, NV. The images in the first post are mine - I took them when I transported this car in September of 2014 from Clairence Daniels in Gardnerville, NV ... @ https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...nsport.521497/ I spent an entire day with Clairence at his property loading the balanced body along with several wooden crates .... Clairence has an impressive history with the early days of Pebble Beach. He narrowly missed losing this car - along with his life - in a wildfire several years ago ... That was when he decided to sell the car - it was very difficult for him to let go of it because of the emotional attachment. Clairence is a very cool guy with great stories about the early days of Pebble Beach. Jim |
Jom, hope your doing well - have not seen you around for a while

My philosophy (as was my father's) is that if someone can make that in the first place than someone can remake it. K |

I'm guessing your Ellena is a precursor to this 1961 I saw a few months back?
|
yes, correct.....pretty car for sure
thats a 59-60 i believe PF convert |
I'm certainly no expert on old Ferrari's, the elderly owner said '61

may very well be - like the one in France that was found in a barn covered with books stacked 5 feet tall!
very expensive car.... |
