Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Moderators, Please leave this in the regular discussion forum for a week then please relocate it with a sticky in the Misc. Dealers section.
I had KurtS from CRG post these for me on the Camaro site and Hawaiian Jeff linked them here so I finally got off my a$$ and made the whole list. Fencl-Tufo Chevrolet was a Chicago area dealership located at 414 E. North Ave. Glendale Heights, ILL. They were a high volume dealer and sold thousands of cars including MANY Hi Performance Chevrolets while in business from late 1968 till the late 80's. The Chitown famous "Mr. Ed" of Brigance Chevrolet later became the New Car Manager there from 1970 till the late 70's and the dealership was known for selling MANY Hi-po cars including 6 Yenko Deuces and some Vegas. The paperwork on many of these cars was salvaged from the dealership by an employee in the 1980's. This paperwork consists of ONLY dealer/factory documents. The person who acquired it at that time was afraid to take papers with the purchasing customers private info on it like bill of sales, financing contracts, etc. (To bad....) The paperwork is VERY cool and can consist of just a dealer order form to a whole packet including window sticker, factory invoice, POP(very few have this), car shipper, etc, etc. I will list the vins by year and car. If you have a car on the list or know of one then e-mail me at [email protected] and I will get the paperwork reunited to the car. Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
this is awsome, does anyone have more information like this for 68 Camaros possible from the North Eastern area, like Ohio. Here's my VIN just in case. 124378n440139, It's supposed to be an L89 car, and it only has 6,800 and some miles on it, do to sitting in garages since the early 70's
thanks alot Lou Stiver |

Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Frank,
That is extremely good info. Any one of those could prove to be the holy grail for the owner. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif I have to ask............any possibility he has paperwork for early '60s cars sold there? Thanks, Verne |
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
No Verne. The dealer did not become Fencl Tufo till I believe 1968.
|
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Correction Verne. The dealership opened in 1967.
|
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Thanks. I have a tear in my eye.......
But I'm very happy for others who may discover the history of their car.... |
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
The name of the dealership sounds weird. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Mr. Ed's brother Bobby has a pin that he used to wear on his suit that said "Whats a Fencl Tufo?" I am doing my best at trying to pry it out of his hands! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif The owners names were Dick Fencl & John Tufo |
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
I'll take two Frank. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif
I can still see that mid 70's corney Fencl-Tufo Monster hand puppet Commercial with the tagline,"Your Monster Dealer!" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif |

Bet noone noticed that dealer stamp, sold in Feb 68. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...;category=6161 http://i4.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/67/72/18_3.JPG |
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Very cool Kurt. Actually that was a different dealership all together. Dick Fencl the owner ended up selling that dealership shortly after that car was sold. He bought interest in Fencl Tufo Chevrolet in 1967.

Dick Fencl the owner ended up selling that dealership shortly after that car was sold.... [/ QUOTE ] ...and Dick Fencl Chevrolet then became Brigance Chevrolet, correct?? |
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
No, they were also two different dealers but close in proximity to each other. When Dick Fencl closed GM closed the point all together. The same situation with Brigance which closed I believe February 16th 1975. There has never been another Chevy dealership in Oak Park since which is suprising because the area is so affluent. The town has a population of 50,000+ people with a median income of 63,000 and an average home price of 275K.
Fencl Tufo closed in 1988-89 due to bad business practices. Rumor has it that John Tufo had a bad gambling problem. The dealership became Quality Chevrolet for a short time then is now called Sunrise Chevrolet. |

OK Mr. Fencl Tufo Historian... what can you tell me about this photo? (Other than you want it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif)
Note the Jim Wangers Chevrolet billboard in the background...and the "302" lettering on the fender. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Its very hard to read, As Jeff said, it looks like Ron O or Ron D...maybe Davis? Does the name ring a bell to anyone? The car is a 1968. The side of the roof reads "Performance parts by Fred Potter"
|
Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Looks to me like Ron Denny... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Joey the car WAS a 1968. The reason I know that is because the orig owner of Geno's Deuce said he bought a 68 Chevelle new at the dealer and used to race this guy......of course he said that he beat the Nova everytime...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
By the way the car was not white when it was new. I believe that the original color was red. |

"Performance parts by Fred Potter" [/ QUOTE ] Twice I have heard that name in a month. I visited a auto parts store for some parts for my rebuild. The owner noticed my Yenko shirt and we started talking about the cars. He was showing me pictures of a 60 something Impala that he used to race and still owns to this day. He remembered his pal Fred Potter at Fencil Tufo got him all the sheet metal for his car. Fred told him he should buy it just in case. Well he still has the sheet metal and he paid near nothing for all of it obviously. Then I mention Mr. Ed being at Fencil. Must be some bad blood there cause he clamed up quick and said "Ok, I don't care to go into that subject". And he seemed pretty agitated. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

Darren that is a cool story. As far as the bad blood, I can see it happening. Sometimes that stuff happens in business. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

Re: Fencl Tufo Chevrolet Hi Performance Vin Numbers
Found out the guys name in the picture of the Fencl Tufo Nova today. The guys name is Ron Vaia and he was John Tufo's nephew. Supposedly he had unlimited access to the parts Dept. for the car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif
