Definitely a major force in the auto world who affected all of us, whether we know it or not. Wonder what his state of mind was recently and what he had to say about the auto industry of late?:hmmm: RIP Lee ~ Pete . |

I have mixed feelings about Lee Iacocca. Definitely a driving force.
Supposedly, it was brought to his attention that the Pinto gas tank COULD explode in a rear end collision. The estimates to fix the issue range from $1 per car to $15 per car. Significant money spread over the 2.1 million Pintos sold (although, I believe post 1976, there were measures taken to avoid the explosions). Supposedly (no recordings, only accounts) when presented with the evidence that they could make adjustments to make the cars safer at (pick your number $1 to $15), Iacocca simply said: "We will pay the claims". They ended up paying much more, not only in $$$, but in damage to the reputation. If that story is true, that is a callous view of human life. |
Yep. The number I’ve heard to implement the fix was $11/car.

Not many people outside of the industry know that the 1962-63 Thunderbird Sports Roadster was one of Lee's accomplishments. |
