Removing an original tank sticker off of a 1969 Corvette

Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the original tanks sticker off a 1969 Corvette gas tank with out destroying it?

Decades ago, people just stopped even attempting to remove them for fear of damaging them. Leave it intact on the tank and buy a new a new tank while preserving the old tank in a large, heavy-wall’d plastic bag.

Or take a high-quality picture, cover it with plastic and put it back.

Post a picture and that will help with suggestions. Some come off easily, some will never come off intact.

It's a numbers matching,1969 Corvette Convertible, Maroon with Black vinyl guts, Tan top, 350/350 M-21?, A/C, P/S, 3:36 Posi, AM/FM Original paint (Poor) and interior car (nice) that's been sitting a while. It's time to bring another one back!

I removed the tank sticker off my 1969 427 corvette in 1994. Mine was pretty rough. However the important info was intact. I took a bunch of pictures. Then carefully removed as best i could. A good portion just crumbled to the touch. If you are planning on replacing the tank, I would cut the metal around the sticker and keep it attached. If not replacing the tank, leave it attached and in place. I'm sure the car will be kept in a garage going forward so no worries about the sticker being damaged further. Again, Lots of pictures. Best of luck, ROB

I'll add to the thread......

If it seems the least bit stubborn, leave it alone. Sometimes a real fine horse hair brush will help clean it. As mentioned, photograph it REALLY well. If you have not considered, submit it to NCRS for validation. It's a great way to further document it.

I'd leave that one alone and just photograph and cover it up. The good news is the upper left-hand corner of the document is intact. Some of the NCRS records for 1969 are missing, but I would work with you to get this one validated if you send it in and we have the Shipping Records on the Microfiche. If we cannot validate, you would be refunded your fee.

----Getting a replacement tank could be a good thing if the car has been sitting with fuel in it for a long time!....Bill S

Bill,

I have a correct Tank, Sender, Straps and insulators coming so I will not be using this tank.
I'm going to try the way I have always done it with a heavy brush like Tim suggested and a razor blade but if it start coming apart, I'll just cut the section out of the Tank, and put in a Gallon Zip Lock bag. Here is the staring Picture of this no hit car I am starting with after we put a hose to it.
