Anyone have a 35mm slide scanner?
 

Over the weekend I was sorting through all my Viper stuff in the basement and cleaning up and sorting various items. I found my box of slide albums from when I worked at Mopar Muscle Magazine back in 1990 to 94. '

I located the looseleaf notebooks full of the pages and pages of slides taken during my visit to the New Mack Assembly Plant in January, 1993 when I documented my 1993 Viper being built on the assembly line.

I have hundreds and hundreds of slides. I now have to figure out a way to scan them into digital form.

Anyone recommend a particular scanner device for this?

I dont dare bring them somewhere or send them away for scanning because they are irreplaceable and I wouldnt want to risk their loss.

Any ideas???

Steve: I just bought a scanner to scan all of Mom's hundreds of pictures in photo albums.

Trying to avoid any hassle when she dies. Everyone gets pictures.

I THINK the scanner has a mode that is usable for slides. Will check into it and let you know.

I have an Epson flatbed. A flatbed scanner can give you some flexibility with being able to do documents and other things too. Most flatbed scanners have slide and negative holders. If you go the flatbed route, just make sure it does come with the holders.

Someone on another site had mentioned the Epson Perfection V600 as a good one for slides. Is that what you have?

At least it can do several at once in its holder. I have probably around 2,000 slides. I rechecked the binders and I must have gone crazy back then, taking photos of the parts racks and bolt bins at the Viper plant during our 1994 Viper Owner's reunion, in addition to my original vist.

Imagine if someone had done that at the Norwood palnt back in '69?

I actually have the Epson V850 Pro. My wife and I are both into photography so we invested in something a little more on the high end. I've been taking pictures since I was a kid and I grew up in Kodak town. I have a ton of slides, negatives and prints as a result, especially concert pictures from the 70s-80s. The V850 has been great so far, no issues. The V600 looks to be a nice choice.

Would love to see some of the concert pics! Who do you have?

I have friends that have an outbuilding they had a lot of books and family slides in. The slides had mildew on them. Most of the books they threw out. Wonder if theres any way to save those slides

Well, to mention a few, The Stones, Lynard Skynard, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Styyx, Heart, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Starcastle, Peter Gabriel, Peter Frampton, Kiss, Rush, Rex, Robin Trower, Kansas, Aerosmith, Gentle Giant. Probably a few more. Some great, some good, some not so good. Concert lighting can be tricky with film speeds back in the day.

Those would have to go to someone that can evaluate them. Someone that does restoration/preservation. Cruise the internet to see if there's someone local. Maybe even hit the library and ask there. It depends on how badly the image is damaged. Moisture is the enemy of film, prints and slides. Get 'em out of the basement and sheds. Once they're gone, they're gone.

Epson Perfection V600 is what we got. Haven't tried scanning slides or negatives yet. Not even sure if we have FOUND all the old slides dad had.
