Real or Memorex?

Guys I'm over my head, but I sure like this car. Is it real?

"ugly vinyl top" THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS, PARDNER. Looks like a nice car, they say it's documented. Granted, that don't seem to mean much anymore.

Pictures are hard to see some items but the x33d80 tag means it's late enough it never had SS wheels. Car was built September 69.
Also it should have hood insulation and no ford fan sign! Rear springs have been replaced with generic version

That car would look great with the top on it

So did the car come with a vinyl top? was the stripe originally white or black? cowl tag looks legit?

I myself would want to see the block stamp with less paint on it, to see if the stamp matches the trans. Kinda hard to tell, looks pretty thick. They did not have to do that.

Also another thing I don't like about the ad, is says VIN matching, and not explicityly say <span style="font-style: italic">original</span> motor and trans. I take that as a way they may be covering themselves if found to be non original. If they can't send you some pre-restoration photos, I would not be eager to jump in. For that value they are asking, they would have to prove that is the original engine (dirty pad with good broach marks, old dirty trans with VIN showing, same goes for rear end axle stamp).

I would go look at it for you, but too busy this week (you should ask SSL78 to go look, he confirmed my 69 L78 car before I bought it). On a side note, Volocars is now supposed to be on the history channel, kinda nice to have a hometown car show finally on TV.

That rear stamping looks suspect. Looks like alot of chinese repop parts were used in the resto.
No pic of the pad stamping?? Hmmmm

The caution fan sticker and the 70.00 Chinese brake booster are enough for me to walk away. I have first hand experience with one of the owners of the dealership trying to convince me he knew the history of a fake LS6 Chevelle convert I was trying to buy. Could be a good car with some correcting but not at that price. Tread carefully over there.

Tag looks legit but the trans &amp; diff look restamped.. To me there seems to be more wrong than right; especially for that kinda money..

Edit: Charlie beat me to the punch.

Re: Real or Memorex?

(That's what I get for leaving the computer, then coming back... Some of this has been mentioned in the interim)

Had a black vinyl top, which means the stripes would also have been black by default.

Not feeling the love for this one. Door strickers and latch should have been painted body color. As already mentioned, rear springs are generic replacements. I don't like the stamp on the rear (but that in itself doesn't mean it isn't original). Kurt S could give a better opinion than mine.

I would guess the quarter panels have been replaced. Didn't do a good job of replicating the inner quarter sound deadening (undercoat) before spatter paint was applied.

Someone mentioned the engine stamp. I couldn't find a pic. But, that is where I would start.

Hood latch looks painted instead of phosphate. Ash trays (unless I am seeing something) look painted silver instead of chrome.

And.... this is just one of my pet peeves, if you are going to restore a car to a &quot;ridiculous level&quot; at least take the giant dent out of the subframe where everyone used to put a floor jack.

As for documentation, I SUSPECT (just that, my suspicion.... which is partly based on my cynicism when it comes to restored cars) that the only piece that is genuine is the Pre-Dilivery sheet, which conveniently has the purchaser's name and address obscured, so you can't check out the story. I also cannot read that info on the POP.
