Tim Schuetz (napa68) 1971 Pontiac Trans Am!

Good morning Bruce!
Hope this finds you well. Against better judgement in the currency economy, I bought another car. Naturally, these types of things tend to transpire when it is not practical. But, cars like this I don't pop up all too often. Below, is what Tracey and I bought. I suspect this will be around for quite a while I have known of this 71 Trans Am since late summer 2019. I saw the car advertised on eBay. In fact, the ad ran a couple of different times and then the car disappeared. I did see the owner had a dedicated thread on the Performance Years. Recently, someone had bumped the thread to the top just out of appreciation for the car. Having seen it, I decided to reach out to the current owner Chris Eagle (4th owner) to see if the car had in fact sold. Chris still had the car and informed me he was going to put the car back up for sale this spring. He was waiting until the Covid-19 crisis had passed. Chris and I had several enjoyable conversations. Not only about this particular car, but cars and life in general. I found Chris to be brutally honest and transparent about the condition of the car. Chris shared a war chest of pictures, information, documents, and researched history about the car. Chris made me feel quite comfortable with the transaction to the point we made a deal sight unseen (something I swore off doing anymore). The car arrived this week (May 7th, 2020) and to say I am thrilled with the car is an understatement. This car is everything I personally cherish in a car.
The car has an interesting history. Chris had done a dandy job of documenting the cars history and tracking down all of the owners. In fact, Chris even found the owners Son of Fenton Pontiac in Port Elgin (where the car was delivered to it's first retail owner). Below, is the information Chris posted on the PY site. Quote:

Wow!! Your a real poncho guy now!! I remember you telling me about the car.
|
Great looking car Tim. And I love the history of it too.
|
Very cool car, Tim.
|
Congratulations - looks like a great car!
|
Killer car.
|
Wow this is one awesome muscle car!!!
The history is impeccable and most of its life was spent in my part of the world. Port Elgin, Bert Straus, Rudy Held, Waterloo, Kitchener, Bruce Nuclear, all right in my stomping grounds!! If you need more info or want current pictures of any of the addresses I can visit. Also a local drag race Aficionados Bill Cole “Colesy’s Place” can get you info on all the local cast of characters. Again amazing car, even better history!!! Ryan W31 |
That is cool.. great buy..

Nice TA.
Check this out, I have a 71 order form for ordering V01 & WT5 options. |
Tim, what a GEM!!! Great story, history, livery, drivetrain.....just WOW! Congrats and thanks for brightening my CV-19 day!!!!
|
I have some customer work to get through before I can putz with the TA. In the mean time, here are some additional pics of the car from back in it's Day 2 livery. The first #7 soak is completed with more to come along with gentle cleaning. Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Tim This is thought to be Wayne in front of his house https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...sdh1mlk3p.jpeg The shed Wayne built for the car https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...psvzwlsbq1.jpg https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...ps24nant1v.jpg Couple of car show shots https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...salfpfl17.jpeg https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...saeikd5oc.jpeg And a later driveway shot. May have to think about getting a set of Keystone's and slicks! https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...swqpgh41p.jpeg |
This is what I am working with down under...........:)

Yeah, those Keystones look da bomb!!!:burnout:
|
thank you for posting all this. great car. I think I would get a set of keystones for it. change them back and forth from time to time.
|
Very cool story!
I've been to Port Elgin many, many times - as a kid. My Dad worked at Bruce in the mid 70s and had my car there in the summers - we used to go and stay at the cottage in Tiverton for the whole summer when I was a kid... thanks for the flood of memories. |
Way cool car! Congrats!!

Here and there this week, I have been fiddling with the TA. I got on top of the cold start transition issue with the carb, as well as solving (I think) the engine run on.
I also had a chance to get it on the hoist and look around. Once I get cleaning on this car, I really think it is going to respond well. Here is what I found.......... Remaining evidence from when the car was raced and flat towed. The tail light harness plug the Wayne made and wired in as well as the remaining welds from the tow bar mounts. https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...pslds3ijte.jpg https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...pscxbiwqyt.jpg Wayne had a Liberty transmission in the car (hence why the original case survived) and obviously a big shifter. https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...psgxenftft.jpg https://i1043.photobucket.com/albums...psw21rfubp.jpg |
I completed the first phase of chassis cleaning today. It is turning out much like I had expected. I still have more cleaning to do, and then follow up with Boshield to protect everything.

Looking really good, Tim.
Nice work as always and a great canvas to be working on! |

Here is a pic of the floor pans on the Harry Mann 68 I had and how it looked after Boshield. Certainly, that car was a prime specimen to work with

I've been spending some time here and there just addressing a few small items that need attention. The key buzzer is now working again, as it the parking brake warning light.
I pulled the front speaker in my 71 this morning, to find it only has 1 wire going to it? So it grounds through the frame of the speaker? I cannot say I have seen that before if it is correct. There does not appear to be any other wires available like there is on the rear speaker. I just wanted to ask the obvious and stupid question before I send the speakers out to be rebuilt. In advance, thanks for the consideration. Tim |

Enjoy the T/A! I'm happy to assist with any questions on these critters. Need any parts? I think I have some left - like an original rear bumper I had rechromed, as well as minor shrapnel here and there in the garage. PM me if you are missing anything.
The only thing I see that may be a later replacement in the engine bay is that brass brake distribution block under the master cylinder. IIRC the 71 to 75 used the cast iron version. I think I have one somewhere??? Steve |

How bout a radiator for a 70 RAIII 4 speed car.......or a 1102024 dist? And the ever elusive, 1108436 starter! Thanks again for thinking of me! Tim |
