1970 Mustang question

Here is one for the Mustang experts: the guy who owned this one years ago says it had a 429 under the hood. But this car obviously doesn´t have a 429 Boss hood on it. Can you tell me anything from just looking at this picture ? Does the hoodscoop or anything else on the car indicate a certain enginesize for example ? Did Ford use "ordinary" 429 engines that could have been installed in it ?

Thanks in advance

Re: 1970 Mustang question

Anders,

Its a '70 and IF it had a 429 it was not the semi-hemispherical headed variety, i.e. BOSS 429. I believe that for '70, the 429 Cobrajet, and SuperCobrajet were available for Mustangs and Cougars. Best wait for a FoMoCo expert to chime in.

If its not a Boss 429, it would have to be a 428 for a 70. The wedge head 429 came in the 71s.

Thanks for your replys. I´m trying to see if I can get hold of the VIN of that car. Would the VIN mabye show us what engine the car was built with ? Also, was that hoodscoop part of a package or could it be ordered with any engine ?

Thanks again https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: 1970 Mustang question

5th digit of VIN will be a letter that shows what engine it was built with. If it was a factory shaker hood car, it likely was an "R" code 428 FE big block car. Z will be Boss 429, I suppose someone could have cobbled together a shaker setup to fit, or just bolted it to the hood if they liked the look and had the parts. Shakers were available with just about all of the V8's, so its presence doesn't say much.

I think it could be a "G" code too = Boss 302?

The other code for a 428 equipped Mustang would be "Q".

For the life of me, I don't know why someone would go through the trouble of installing a 429 in a '70 Mustang unless it was an original Boss 429 car. It's just too much engine for the engine bay. The color is not one available on the Boss 429, FWIW.

My money is on the car being a modified Boss 302 or SportsRoof with the CJ. 351s also could receive the Shaker, including the 2bbl.

my guess it is a sportsroof Mustang that someone put a shaker on...

Re: 1970 Mustang question

But you could get a SportsRoof with a Shaker.
