Problem with Hurst shifter

I have a Hurst Super Shifter with the red handle that pushes down to shift into reverse. Sometimes it works and sometime not. How far should the red handle depress to be working properly. Any help appreciated. Thank you, Tom.

Re: Problem with Hurst shifter

Those can be touchy to setup -- make sure you have a positive neutral before connecting shift rods ... if I remember right you can use a 1/4" drill bit to lock it into the neutral position. Install each rod and make sure they are not "loaded" or binding when installing. The other issue is the thin shim plates in the shifter may be deformed which will cause binding -- hence hard to get reverse. At one time, those shifters could be sent back the Hurst and rebuilt ... price wasn't bad but I am not sure if that service is still available.

A standard sized Phillips screwdriver also works perfectly to line up the linkages.
