71 Ralley wheel paint

I have searched the web to no avail!

Im looking for the paint code for the cast 5 spoke 71 Camaro Ralley wheel. I have a nice 71 but the wheels are Maroon overkill. Im sure they are not the same as Vett ralley silver ya?

cheers Dave

Dave
I have a can of PPG lacquer and will relay the # early next week, not at home till Friday. Or you might check at Nasty Z28
I beleive it is DDL 32961 , PPG 32961 you need lacquer if you can get it ?

Done correctly, it should have a textured finish. pm Just bad joe. I think he has the mixing formula.

Yes, as mentioned above, the correct formula is DDL32961. If you search the NastyZ28 website you'll find more than enough info on this. I believe someone was recently able to get the lacquer formula from Year One. BTW, the wheels in your post (OP 6pakdave) look like 76 and later wheels.

That wheel looks great. I saw an original one recently and it was very textured, almost rough.

cheers guys, Those #pt numbers might be of use with my paint guy. Im sure he can x-reference them.

Looks like the valve location changes on the later rim?

Re: 71 Ralley wheel paint

Dave, the original lacquer formula is now a little difficult to find. Most paint manufacturers can match the color but have trouble replicating the texture which was done with a suede additive. Somewhere I have the actual formula too. Let me know if you need it and I'll post a picture of the can with the specific formula for DDL 32961.

This type of wheel in early 1970 had a 5/8” oval valve stem clearance opening in the outer face. Mid 1970-76 had a 13/16” oval valve stem clearance opening. 1977-1978 had a round 7/8” opening, 1979-81 are 1” round. The date code is stamped near the actual valve stem hole (i.e. K11 6 14). K=Kelsey-Hayes, 1=Chevrolet, 1=1971, 6=month, 14=day. The outer rim face protrudes out more on the early wheels (pre 77) creating less of a lip with the trim ring installed. Also, the spoke design is rounder and less flat compared to later years. -Mike

Thanks for the info guys. Its amazing the small GM design tweaks to details like these cast rims model to model.
Im not too concerned about the rough argent finish, the correct 'dull grey' is what Im looking for.

cheers Dave

I'm sure those rims are stamped, not cast.

Re: 71 Ralley wheel paint

Dave, YEAR ONE has the absolute correct wheel paint. It takes a few weeks to get, but it is the original DDL-32961 formulation. There is a thread on nastyz28.com with pics of my wheels. They are DBA(dead balls accurate) it's an industry term! Oh crap, just looked at where you are from. I don't think it can go by plane!
