Muffler recomendations?
 

I just bought a 1969 SS350 Nova with the most perfectly done 2.5 dual exhaust system I have seen. The problem is at idle the sound from the mufflers resonates through out the interior and you can not hear anything else including the engine idle. I am not sure of the manufacture of the two mufflers but they are square with a diamond plate case. I usually run a Flowmaster crossover muffler with 2.5 exhaust and I wanted to try the Pypes crossover system in the future but I would hate to change over this complete exhaust system just because I need a different mufflers. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I would love to see pics of this nice system. What do the tailpipes look like?

The Walker version of the Corvair Turbo muffler is a great, traditional sounding muffler for the Day 2 sound.

An X or H pipe does wonders in eliminating exhaust drone, also quiets things down a bit.

From my experience, Flowmaster is the king of drone. Magnaflow mufflers work/sound great without the drone.

Like Eric said, a H or X pipe will help greatly with less drone also.

I recently installed a pair of oval shaped Hooker turbo (maybe called super turbo, can't remember) and they do not drone at all. Excellent sound at idle and cruising speeds but really come alive under hard acceleration. Just about any muffler that isn't designed like flowmaster will sound good. flowmaster wasn't called a muffler 30 yrs ago in the first place.. they called it a power chamber. I've had friends make the same thing at home. Noise makers ... if your exhaust is done right and you use a real muffler you will hear the engine more clearly. Flowmaster sounds like a hotrod dump truck....

No crossover H or X for me either. I guess its good for a few horses but I like to hear left and right side.

Not sure if it has Flowmaster mufflers on it but it does have an X-pipe and the tail pipes end at the quarter panels where you do not see them.

I would bet the mufflers are Spintech. I have no experience with them. With full tail pipes and the crossover, I would say your instincts on a muffler change is right. Any true turbo muffler would be better.

I had 2 chamber flomasters on my 421 Lemans and hated them.I put Hushpowers on it with a H pipe and was night and day diff.Can now listen to the radio with no problem.Just put them on my 69 455 firebird with a X pipe and they are a touch louder but still can listen to the radio.Going to pull the X and replace with a H.FWIW,Tom

Yeah, those look like Spintech mufflers. I'm surprised they have a drone, but I've never tried them. I actually ran the Summit turbo mufflers on my old 1970 L78 Camaro and you could talk to people in the car and it had the classic musclecar rumble and that was with a full 3&quot; dual exhaust.
