455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
Looking to see if someone out there has this 1971 Trans Am or Formula car before I sell the engine to a GTO guy for his project.
Complete engine minus carb and intake manifold. The engine is standard bore and runs but has a slight noise / knock. VIN: 1N110295 |

Re: 455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
He wants to put it in a Goat? Aw, too bad, many 1971 TAs out there without their original engine - this would be great for somebody's HO Firebird engineless project.

Re: 455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
Likely came out of a Formula - the WC code was the Ram Air code which was also used in the GTO. Although they would occasionally show up in TA's the TA was not considered a Ram Air application and had different carb numbers as well.

Actually, that is not correct. Ram-Air and non-Ram-Air used the same block codes. In 71 there were 3 455HO block codes, WC (455HO with M22), WL (455HO with 3-speed manual (yes there were a few built)), and YE (455HO with Th400). In 72 they had 4 455HO block codes, an auto and manual trans version for each "with" and "without" unitized distributor. |
Re: 455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
BTW, the engine actually came out of a Formula. Sadly, it was parted out and sold off. The "N" in the VIN denotes it was a Norwood Assembly Plant engine. Normwood only built Firebirds and Camaros.

Re: 455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
Too bad to see an HO formy die. Did you know the car?
As far as the RA vs nonRA codes from above, Boss was confusing the block coding with the carbs. In 71, there were 4 carb #s, manual and auto x RA and nonRA. The TAs were considered nonRA but in a few random documented cases got a RA carb. Probably just a situation were the nonRA carbs were out and they needed to keep the line moving. Not really sure what the functional difference is between the RA and nonRA versions. |
Re: 455 HO Engine WC Code 4Spd
I traded PMs with the original poster. Very sad - it was a Black car. Uber rare color in 1971.
