How to solve this problem?
 

I'm hoping that one of you restorers can help me solve this problem. I've taken this rear to bare metal & tried everything that I know of to seal it before painting. Still I get this mottling when I apply the finish coat. Help!

Trying to re-paint with part warmer today. maybe I can get the paint to skim over before the mottling occurs?

Thanks - it's definitely fish eyeing - I did clean the surface with acetone to try & get rid of impurities.

Looks like fish eyes caused from silicon or oil on the surface, in the air, or from your air compressor. You could spray some of your paint onto masking paper and if it fisheyes on paper you have an environment, or air compressor problem. If it passes the paper test sand smooth and clean with lots of hot water and dawn dish soap. Don't dry it using compressed air instead use a fan. Next wipe it down with mild prep solvent and paper towels. If you see the prep solvent move around on the surface repeat the above or use a heat gun to get the oil and silicon out of the pores of the metal. If you still have problems use lighter coats and try to get them to bridge over. The old days we used fish eye eliminator to the paint but it caused more problems than it fixed.

Have the rags you used to clean the surface been washed? I noticed that rags washed and then had fabric softener on them that may cause some problems? When I do windows and use cotton towels that have been washed and put into the dryer with softener the windows have a film or streaks if you will so maybe that will help to use lint free rags?

Are you using a primer before paint? Like Dave mentioned rags that have been washed then fabric softener used creates problems with paint. Liquid softener is the worst.. Even on my towels that I use for buffing and polishing I wash then dry without softener.. I usually use denatured alcohol then let air dry. Next use a propane torch if I have had issues with fish eyeing previously on the part. Helps pull the oils and impurities out then Ill use a different rag with alcohol and air dry again. Lastly I apply a light coat (tack coat) on the part let sit for 2 or so minutes then start applying full coats.. Hopefully this helps.

I had a similar problem and solved it with 'Kilz' purchased at Home Depot. A light coat is all that was required and then the color coat. Good to go....

I would bet to say the problem is in your air compressor and solvents in the air......been there done that.
